Pros

>has lots of needed QoL features

>succinct prose

>uses Pathfinder ruleset with understandable limitations considering the game's scope and scale

>diverse set of characters

>you can cuck an orc

>we're at version 1.08 at the time of writing

Cons

>kingdom management sucks

>prose so succinct dialogue screen sometimes go blank

>uses Pathfinder ruleset to a fault

>diverse set of characters

>an orc can cuck you

>bugs have gained sentience and have established a civilization within the game's executable

I want off this entomon ride. Oh and all magnet links I found are outdated, grab a copy off goodolddownloads instead.

1.07 patch (torrent, lmao imagine paying for this shit) is 12gb, and it's still full of bugs. Just give it a few months at this point.

565bd9  No.15580507

This game needs another year of consistent patching to be playable without frustration, and maybe a year or two of dedicated mods and some DLC (which you should pirate, just saying more needs to be added to the base game) to be a great game. They clearly rushed it out as it is, which is par for the course with crowd funded shit. The writing is acceptable to be introductory to the world, someone who knows their shit might be excited or disappointed depending on how blandly they state facts about the setting in common conversation. The game discourages roleplay and encourages rollplay by not giving any (as far as I've played) nods to which god you choose or whether you're a cleric or paladin. The choices boil down to where you want to sit on the alignment chart but there aren't enough consistent choices to keep you solidly one alignment, meaning you'll likely end up slanting towards literally any other alignment than the one you chose at the start no matter what you play. Plus the writers chose to attach retarded alignments swing to some choices, i.e. the only way to attack and kill a worg in one of the early areas (the one with the mites and kobolds) is to choose a lawful good choice, no option to attack because you're evil. There are countless examples of this. Characters are mostly bland and predictable, the only interesting part of these kinds of games anymore are the main characters that people create themselves, which makes the choices you're given all the more important and disappointing. The overarching story of the game is fairly interesting, great concept, lukewarm presentation and execution, but at least it feels good to massacre mostly everyone who talks like a fag at you. Mods that let you kill the rest and give you decent companions will fix this.

Anyway tl;dr it's fine I guess, I'm used to eating shit in this genre. It has more soul than Pillars of Eternity, but it's nowhere near as interesting as something like Age of Decadence. An attempt was made and once it's all polished up, it'll probably be something I recommend, which can't be said for Pillars.

It's par for the course for the entire modern video game industry, don't go bringing crowd funding in as an excuse.

>The game discourages roleplay and encourages rollplay by not giving any (as far as I've played) nods to which god you choose or whether you're a cleric or paladin

If you choose Erastil, there's a single dialog option line when you mean the high priest at the feast where you become baron. I imagine there's probably a line somewhere with Tristan if you choose Seranrae. Probably ONLY one line, in the entire game, and only for a couple gods directly relevant to major characters.

>This game needs another year of consistent patching to be playable

We both know that we'll be lucky if they keep patching it for two months

>and some DLC

The game is fucking huge already. If they add DLC at all it should be in the form of more classes, companions (that aren't shit), and if possible some way to insert some of the more rare weapons (like slings) into the general loot.

You're right of course, I just wanted to take a jab at crowd funding in particular.

I imagine there's probably a line somewhere with Tristan if you choose Seranrae. Probably ONLY one line, in the entire game, and only for a couple gods directly relevant to major characters.

My guy is a cleric of Asmodeus and it came up once in a side quest where there was an option to say a follower of Asmodeus never does anything without payment. I can't even remember who it was with, some random NPC. Never brought up in the main story or when choosing to restore the shrine, I expected the option to convert the barony to your deity but so far that's not happening.

>We both know that we'll be lucky if they keep patching it for two months

I'm shocked they're still patching right now but no matter how much they do fix, a community patch will come out and fix shit probably. I've been writing down bugs and dialogue errors to submit to whoever takes up the project, I'll have to update it when new patches come out.

>The game is fucking huge already. If they add DLC at all it should be in the form of more classes, companions (that aren't shit), and if possible some way to insert some of the more rare weapons (like slings) into the general loot.

All the things you mentioned can be added by mods, except for the non-shit companions if you want voiced shit. I'd rather they made some DLC to visit other places in the setting, won't hold my breath though.

Arcanum was bugged to shit, so was Fallout 2 but you could complete them. Kingmaker has had a few gamebreaking quest bugs, I've had followers disappear (put them back in with clones) and a bunch of other weirdness. Can't speak to BG2 or Ultima.

I don't get what you mean. The vast majority of grapples begin with someone who doesn't provoke attacks of opportunity and who is adjacent to the target. It's technically easier than rolling an attack because you don't even have to roll damage die. The defender's section is almost wholly comprised of selecting an option, rolling, and then ending the turn.

A chart that covers the possibilities and steps of performing an attack would be infinitely more complex than this.

>Is the attacker considered armed?

>Is the attacker performing a ranged attack?

>Does the attacker have the point-blank mastery feat?

>Is the attacker proficient with the weapon?

>Pick a corner of your square, can you draw an unobstructed line to each corner of your target's square?

>Do any creatures stand between you and your target?

>Is your target threatened by or threatening another creature?

>Does the attacker have the precise shot feat?

This shit could go on and on. It doesn't mean the attack system is overly complex. It means the faggot attacker should know what he wants to do when he says the words, "I attack this creature," and not waste everyone's time. No wizard is going to look at this and think, "huh, I wonder what intriguing option I should perform against this minotaur that is currently grappling me?" And if they do, they can sit next to the asshole barbarian who sat down and thought, "hey, I'm going to use my falchion as an improved ranged weapon, what do I have to do?"

>>15581228

Because you then have to look at your players and explain to them that they cannot use spiked armor to protect themselves from grappling, nor can they overpower people who grappled them, nor can they grab and wrestle someone into a different position, nor can they actually just wrestle, because some people thought that grappling was overly complicated.

>>15581335

It sounds more like you're lamenting the system's transition into real time and would prefer turn-based gameplay like I would.

Playing blaster is primarily about cheesing your way to higher caster levels and trying to get damage bonuses on top. I'm not sure how many methods there are to do that in this videogame. Usually sorcerers are best for blasting, since they can use bloodline arcana for an extra +1 damage per die rolled. In the PnP it gets extreme for Sorcs as they can get +3 damage per die rolled on their spells (crossblooded orc & draconic bloodlines with blood havoc bloodline mutation), but here I think +1 damage per die rolled is as good as it gets.

>>15574801

>Of course. Otherwise a Lawful Good paladin could never be lawful because he isn't following the code of some evil god.

You're still breaking the paladin's code of conduct if you fail to respect legitimate authority and behave with honor, or if you support chaotic ends, which means you would fall. Alignment debates might be fun and while I trend to a more permissive take on paladins and alignment myself, there's a point when you're just flat-out going against what a paladin is supposed to stand for and you need to fall, and it sounds to me that your take on paladins is that they only need to abide their own rules and no one else's, which really isn't what being lawful is about since you seem to be baking in a "fuck the laws, I do as I will because I play by my own rules" exception to the paladin's lawfulness. I could see lawful evil acting like that maybe but a paladin would have to have a good reason to brazenly reject rule of law or declare it does not apply to him. A paladin could find himself breaking the law without falling but he can't willfully reject the concept that laws should apply to him and not expect to fall just because he thinks his servitude to a higher power absolves him of the need to do so.

>No, usually the best games I play are very heavy on GM effort. However, if you pick paladin, I expect you to put forth some effort yourself. Clearly, you're averse to that.

And your basis for this conclusion is what? That I think "do or fall" is a shit GM style and a terrible way to encourage people to RP. Come now, I think you're already revealed your notions of GMing. Either that or you've revealed your eagerness to jump to conclusions.

Vid related. There are a few disagreements (for instance Alchemy is a very potent aid to combat, and Crafting is generally a must-have skill - also hybriding is doable, but a greater challenge) but overall he's quite on point.

There's also a rather old demo with a rather outdated interface and mechanics: https://www.indiedb.com/games/the-age-of-decadence/downloads/the-age-of-decadence-demo-r43

Dungeon Rats is a straight dungeon crawler, as the name indicates. It does have party combat though, unlike AoD which is all solo.

>>15582433

>AoD's character progression is as dead as Wasteland 2's unless you consult a guide on how to min-max your playthrough so you can mix builds, otherwise you'll be stuck on one straight upgrade path (ie merchant->merchant). Game does not allow experimentation.

Mixing builds is not that hard, tbh. Playing to your strengths is recommended for your first playthrough but nothing is stopping you from playing a guardsman that doubles as a diplomat or a merchant that does quite a bit of combat or thievery on the side. You just need to be good at finding sidequests and training for more skillpoints and avoid wasting SP spreading yourself thin. Min-maxing autism is mostly necessary if you want to wear 3 or more hats (assuming one of those 3 is not loremaster, because lore tends to pay for itself in sidequests) at the same time.

One thing is true about AoD though, the game strongly expects you to have high attainments in particular skills as the game progresses. Having a low skill is overwhelmingly as good as having no skill at all, esp. if it's a critical one for your role. Although there are quite a few partial successes and alternative paths baked into most quests, overall it's strongly recommended to develop your primary skills instead of spreading yourself thin. So it's generally recommended to only skill up 1 or 2 skills on the side from your primary job and max them out. Non-combat routes are, although entertaining, very CYOA-ish.

Also, AoD really likes stat checks and you should probably not play a combat build with less than 6 Dex. 8 Dex is better though. General recommendation for a combat build is to skill your weapon skill, block/dodge, and crafting. Block is preferred imo if you use crafting, simply because you get a ridiculously higher block chance than dodge and crafting will give you much more powerful shields than the baseline.

>How is that?

Let's just say that there is a reason why Bioware games limit the player to agree happily, agree grumpily, ask for money and do it in an evil way and why Obsidian games that don't diverge a lot but do try to be dynamic about who the character is and having the game world react to that are more buggy than Bioware games, and why you'll never seen a game like The Witcher 2 again with two completely different divergent paths. Age of Decadence is what happens when someone falls in love with Fallout and then spends decades on not only replicating it but also autistically convinced that decisions for flavour shouldn't be a thing and that every choice should bring different content and who you play as change the choices available to you. The amount of reactivity and divergent paths in it are insane but it's not a super long game because of that. You could play it four times to completion and still not have seen everything.

This comes at a cost however, it's pretty much a VN with Fallout style combat.

Oh yeah, in that encounter, I would strongly recommend going to Options and maxing the shit out of combat animation speed or you'll be waiting too long since there's like 20 dudes on screen taking turns as you wait around. You can even raise it beyond the cap of a 4x multiplier if you want by going to My Documents > My Games > Age of Decadence > prefs.cs and setting:

>$pref::Video::combatAnimationSpeed = "4";

To whatever value you want. 4x multiplier is usually good enough though.

>>15582515

Ascension ending isn't the best ending imo, even if it's the biggest win. It kinda makes all the political machinations and everything else about AoD feel pointless. Then again so does blowing up Maadoran. The most entertaining ending is probably the Lord Miltiades ending. I'm really disappointed there's no Emperor Antidas ending other than making him a god's puppet.

>>15582516

Replay value is crazy high though. Assassin/Guard/Praetor/Thief/Merchant questlines all give you a different experience and even in the same questline there are drastically different ways you can do things and different outcomes you can engineer, not to mention you can hop factions partway through.

Forgot to mention this: If you go 10 dex you should really get a crafting skill so you can make your own gear. Otherwise you are either stuck with ridiculously weak armor or armor that reduces your action points.

Pathfinder does not handle high-level campaigns well. At level 17+ especially you've got Wizards who can stop time and summon up loads of shit while they buff up everything then unpause and instakill a fucker and they can create their own private mini-worlds and do all kinds of ridiculous bullshit. Clerics also go fucking crazy. The game just breaks down because of the sheer world-bending power the PCs have at that stage. While 3.5 had epic levels from 20-30 (PF did mythic tiers broken BS instead, mostly because they cannot into high-level campaigns), those were complete overkill and you were generally acknowledged to be essentially a god once you reach high levels, especially at 9th level spells. But even from levels 10 onwards well-played spellcasters are already worldbenders with cosmic power at their fingertips. And even from level 1 spellcasters can own the game. PF's not called caster edition for nothing.

Anyway, point I'm making is, you almost never see campaigns that want to go beyond level 15 because at that stage the game just breaks down and becomes unable to handle PC power even when they're not powergaming.

Merc prices are based on your character level. It's essential to buy them ASAP, ideally immediately after you level up so that they are as close to your XP as possible (they start at exactly the same level with 0 xp progress towards the next). If you buy a Merc at level 2, it costs 2000, if you buy one at level 5 it costs something like 18000. At level 14 it's 92000.

By the time you get to around level 5 the xp difference won't really be a big problem, though I do still prefer to have everyone leveling at the same time.

>Grapple is the most controversial of them all. A game within a game, a combat system nested inside another combat system, and having a grappling character in your party usually has profound effects on the game you play – for most encounters are ill suited for the grapple. This all bloats its development costs to literally unknown size, but that size is surely higher than, for example, making a magus. And archetypes. Together. So our current position is – grapple will only be in the game as a monster ability, and our position will remain like that unless we find some simplified grapple version that can still be considered grapple.

More than flowcharts, you'd need separate animations for every combination of size/footedness, for every action that can be taken before/during/after grappling, and for every number of combatants in a grapple.

If I were to pick a feature that's difficult strictly on the basis of an excessive flowchart relative to the rest of the ruleset, it would be something like psionicspsychic magic.

Regular melêe combat doesn't really need any particular animations other than generic "attack" and "flinch" for broadly similar weapon types, unless you're going for an exceptionally high level of expressiveness (e.g.: multiple animations for nearly identical actions, like lightly slashing or deeply impaling an enemy depending on damage rolled, parry/block/dodge animations, etc.). For something like grappling or tripping, just using icons would reduce the expressiveness down to the level of a roguelike.

Same for classes…Paladin? Bonus to warden/military/public relation. Mage/Wizzard? Bonus to arcane/culture. Etc..

>printing press for maximum distribution of her shitposts against the Pitax king. What exactly did she do to you that made you not like her?

Because you’re looking in the short term and not the long term. Pitax king has a kingdom you have a barony. Someone in your barony is talking shit, worse it’s your baronys diplomat. At best it simply means you don’t give a shit at worst it means you willingly condone her attacks.

With the amount of money she wasted you could have built a townhall, orphanage, or claimed some land. But now you have a pissed off king who has a legitimate Casus belli to attack you. Best case scenario he makes you stop and demands monentary compensation but now that he knows he can bully you it’s only going to get worse.

Second a lot of thing she does is contradictory and makes no sense and not in the lol I’m so random way. It’s the I preach one thing then do the other. Take for example the borders situation.

A group of hunters have trespassed into your lands, if you see the map you’d realize that’s pretty damn impossible it’s like the Russian soldiers getting lost in Ukraine. This is a classic case of your rivals testing to see how far they can get away with and scouting your borders for any weaknesses.

Now the smart thing to do is to search them, kick em out, and enforce border security. Your diplomats suggestion is to just leave them alone and let them hunt in your lands. But that’s retarded, because even if you were stupid enough to believe they’re hunters you should still enforce border security, why? Ask the Native Americans what happens when you don’t enforce borders, people walk all over you because you can’t prove you use the lands. now if she gave diplomatic reasons like we should take this impasse lying down because we have no standing army and enforce border security next time id understand. But her only excuses are let’s not piss off pitax citizens and enrage the king. What you mean like when you shitpost him Linzi?

Then the next event is a trade deal with some nation ruled by a egomaniac. Trade deal is very fair all they want is to let some merchants set up some shops. But no Linzi doesn’t want that we have to keep these people out because they’re helping out a bad guy they can’t be allowed a foothold in your land. Linzi where was the love of borders when those hunters are around?

the game very slowly hands out adviser slots while you're stuck with a ever growing backlog pile of stat raping events that need adviser to deal with them. On top of that it only gives you two choices per slot. And when the cultural adviser slot popped up it my only choices were the kender bitch or the loremaster elf who had showed up out of nowhere and had flat out said in his dialog that he didn't want an adviser position. >That only makes my MC barbarian's dick harder

My Lord, war ultimately boils down to a battle of power bases. As the saying goes Know thy enemy know thyself. So what does our enemy have? On paper the nation of pitax has 8,790 people. One city, one village, one town, and one hamlet. It’s soldiers are unknown, of course if our diplomat did her job instead of wasting money on a printing press we would know more but I digress. Now traditionally an army would be 5% of the nation. So let’s say he can field an army of 439 people at any given time.

Now what do we have? One city, two villages, population unknown. Why? Because this land is cursed we are constantly fighting trolls and kobolds. That’s not even accounting for the fact that our citizens and soldiers are infected and could turn into monsters at any given time. We can’t even do a census because you’re always on the road saving people. On paper we have an alliance with the sword lords but in truth we are little more than their vassal state that’s not even including the fact that they ultimately might not respond to our aid because they’re preparing for a civil war.

Right now more than anything we need stability to grow, once this curse is finished we need time to heal. But just as importantly we need a reliable ally and friendly relations with our neighbors. But we can’t do that if Linzi insults them at every given turn. One moment she insults pitax next she insults Razmir. Can you not see the precarious situation we are in? If Pitax attacks us we can always count on the fact that one of our neighbors will have our back but thanks to Linzi we don’t even have that.

None of those are even close to optimized or anything I would consider having in my party at all. Harrim is average for a cleric, but I'd much rather have an animal domain cleric for another pet. Ekun does "ranger" just fine if you ignore the most important part of his kit, but frankly ranger is a pretty shit class to begin with (ignoring the pet, which plenty of other classes have.)

Linzi and Nok Nok are both good enough to use as is. I don't use either, the bard competes for the sorcerer slot and I already had a knife rogue by the time I found Nok Nok, but they are literally the only two I would consider using.

Wanting a fully custom party in a party-based RPG with character customization is a very ordinary request. It's not an echo chamber request.

We all know the premade characters are horribly unoptimized and unlike most RPGs where you can drown out shitty starting stats with loads of levelup stats, here in Pathfinder your mistakes at level 1 will haunt your character for the rest of the game. Valerie for instance is a fighter class that is thoroughly incompetent when it comes to hitting things because she has a turgid 14 str instead of 20. The difference between 14 str and 20 str means she has -3 attack and -3 damage compared to a proper 20 str fighter in a game where leveling up by itself will only give you +1 attack and no bonus to damage and the fighter class means that the only thing Valerie is good for is hitting things and taking a beating. A decent fighter is good at both. Valerie, on the other hand, is only good at taking a beating.

Anyone can cast Summon Monster. The summoner's thing is just that he has a special ability giving him a ridiculously large amount of top-level Summon Monster spellcasts. But as a special condition he can't have his pet out while he uses his monster summoning ability and his monster summoning ability doesn't stack like the spell does (so if he uses it twice in a row he just unsummons his previous monsters and summons new one, whereas regular spell summons will stack just fine). There's also a special rule that a summoner's eidolon (that's his pet) shares magic item slots with its summoner (mundane items are fine though), unlike animal companions which can just equip their own magic items (some of which can make them hideously OP) without robbing their spellcasters of magic item slots, plus they don't need to go away when the character casts a monster summoning spell either, but eidolons do tend to get a lot of extra perks on top of the animal companion perks.

Anyway, there are tons of classes that can cast Summon Monster (or, in the druid's case, Summon Nature's Ally*) and use it to flatten enemies. If you want a summoner playstyle experience, just play a druid or cleric and throw all your feats into strengthening your summons while taking an animal companion (cleric needs animal domain - erastil deity I guess - and a boon companion feat). Druid in particular is infamous for this playstyle where they summon monsters and turn into monsters while entering battle with their pet monster. You don't need a special archetype for this. Herald Caller cleric is pretty much a downgrade over a regular cleric throwing his feats into summoning. For summoning, all the feats you need are Spell Focus (Conjuration), Augment Summoning, and Superior Summons and a regular human cleric will get those feats faster than a herald caller, even if he also has to burn a feat on boon companion, but he will also have a second domain and shit. Also, having a bard in the party helps a lot, since they buff everyone's attack and damage.

Have fun. There's your PF summoner build. You can also summon as a sorcerer or wizard by the way, so a sylvan sorcerer is another way to get a lot of summon monster spellcasts and an animal companion. Even bards can cast summon monster, but they have a shitty spell progression so no one really does it.

*Fun fact: Summon Nature's Ally was considered a crazy good druid spell, so in pathfinder they nerfed Summon Nature's Ally a bit and buffed Summon Monster instead because it used to be that a druid would summon a beast with SNA 2 that a wizard would summon with SM 3 but Summon Monster was already more or less on par with SNA in power because Summon Monster gave special templates that empowered their summons. In PF they just went crazy with supporting Summon Monster through extra options instead. SNA is still a fairly good spell though, and in the PnP game you can just prestige a druid into 2 levels of Envoy of Balance and then he can template all his summons too.

Compared to the regular cleric a Herald Caller

>Only gets one Domain

>Does not have Medium armor or Shield profficiency

>May cast "summon monster" spontaniously

>Gains Augment Summoning feat at level 4 and Superior Summoning at level 8

Note that Augment Summoning requires Spell Focus (Conjuration), which is otherwise not particularly useful to the Harald caller since it does nothing to improve or help improve the summons. By choosing this archetype you save 1 feat, even if you still want armor/shields eventually. However, it is true that a Human Cleric could have all the relevant feats by level 3 instead of waiting until 4/8. The MAIN difference than is Spontaneous summoning.

In my personal opinion, I don't think Summons are really worth using under normal circumstances in this game. They take a very long time to cast (due to bugs the cast time may actually be more than a full round). They cannot be directly controlled, and even with feat/equipment support their hit and AC are usually too low to do much good in combat, so they end up just being meat shields that can't survive more than one or two rounds, which happens to be the same amount of time it takes to cast them in the first place. Animal companions get very beefy especially with buffs but you can't really buff a summon that much, and their basic stats are lower as well.

That's the joke, yes. But it's also a depressingly true reflection of how incompetently she was built. This is a case of specializing at one thing by giving up another thing you could've been just as good at. That's not just bad specialization. That's shooting yourself in the foot hard and calling yourself specialized now that you're only competent at 1 thing instead of 2. She also has ridiculously high charisma for a fighter, a class that doesn't do fuck-all with charisma and habitually dumps it down to the bare minimum owing to how irrelevant it is.

You can always build her into a bard (archaeologist if you already have another bard in the party) though. Then her stupidly high charisma can actually do something. You can also build her into an eldritch scion magus but then she gives up her shield and you'll need to micromanage her so she actually uses her magus abilities properly. Man it would be nice if they implemented something like DAO's tactics system where you could set your own AI for your companions. Instead you get to be resigned to companions fighting like idiots if their abilities are slightly complicated.

Reasonably speaking teleportation spells would allow you to omit travel times, so I wouldn't be surprised if they omitted teleports just for gameplay purposes. Still, it's dumb as fuck.

Still, this reminds of Arcanum with its "Should I play mundane, technologist, or mage?" "PLAY MAGE YOU WANT TELEPORT! TRUST ME!" "Hang on there, I don't want to go game breaker" "TELEPORT IS NOT GAME BREAKING. WALKING AND BACKTRACKING JUST REALLY SUCKS." KotOR 2 also made you want to get Force Speed asap before it dishes out bonus attacks just because the doubled movement speed helps you deal with all the loads and loads of walking, although Force Speed's higher level modes is a must-have for any jedi combatant (but not jedi mage) in general because it gives you extra attacks per round. KotOR 1 on the other hand… you didn't get to start as a jedi so you had to wait until you had a jedi to speedrun.

Yeah there's also Scry & Die, where your Wizard uses scrying spells to locate your end-boss then teleports your entire party (or more!) into his room to kill him after an extended buff phase. Ultimate Magic though added a helpful "clarification" (these fags love doing that shit) buried somewhere that scrying does not and never did count as making a person sufficiently familiar with a region to allow teleporting to it, even though in 3.5 this was blatantly the case. But revisionist retcon "clarifications" are a depressingly popular tactic among the pinheads at paizo. They could've said "new rule" and admitted it was a rebalancing pass and added it back to the core rulesbook, but instead they do that shit where in book D they bake in caveats and special rules for how shit from book A functions and insist that it always worked this way (honest!) even when it's blatantly untrue and makes reading book A a crapshoot since apparently in book D they elaborate special subrules modifying the mechanics. One of the many reasons why Pathfinder is a load of shit.

Pathfinder players like to shit on GURPS for being overly complicated but they are playing the biggest rules clusterfuck themselves. In fact it's probably because of that clusterfuck and learning curve that they typically dare not play anything other than PF, because learning curves seem so daunting now that they've done it once. They don't quire realize, D&D and PF are in a league of their own when it comes to convoluted rules messes. GURPS, at least, is actually straightforward and transparent about its rules, without bullshit "gotcha!" clauses buried way the fuck in some other book.

The base rules treat guns as "Emerging" or in their early stages of development (which is bullshit considering all the magitech shit in PF's setting) and have all sorts of drawbacks, (ie: your gun doesn't just misfires on a 1, it's broken and useless until repaired) and are a bitch to repair and maintain, you effectively *must* be a gunsmith (which of course is a feat rather than a skill) yourself to have a hope of using one for more than a few turns. They're just all around worse than a cross bow or a cheap magic wand by nearly every metric. They have higher crit damage. But if you made a x4 crit heavy crossbow that could only fire one bolt a round, needed rare super expensive bolts, takes a full standard action to reload (and that's *after* the rapid reload feat) and will break apart on a bad roll, no one would use it.

The more commonly used "advanced" rules treat them as being a viable class of weapons and not a silly gimmick trap option that are vastly inferior to cross bows in every way but crit damage. They're revolvers and repeaters instead of fucking muskets and the guns won't explode if your hands just if you look at them wrong

Basically, default rules treat guns like they're from a revolutionary war era, or pirate setting, while the advanced rule guns are from more of a wild west cowboy setting. And since someone who decides to play a class named "gunslinger" is probably is going to want to be more of a dwarven Clint Eastwood than a random scury pirate who gets stabbed by a cutlass after his single shot pistol jams from a random splash of water, the advanced firearm rules are much preferred.

By the actual Pathfinder rules, swarms of tiny creatures take full damage from bashing and half damage from slashing and piercing attacks

It's diminutive and fine creature swarms that negate physical damage types entirely.

Has this been properly replicated?

2c4f57  No.15598879

>>15598858

The swarms in the game are (or should be) Fine creatures. The spiders in those swarms are basically normal bugs, possibly a little on the large side (so tarantula to giant huntsman spider). In any case Fine is anything under 6 inches, which they probably are, or possibly Diminutive for the largest.

The swarm spiders are NOT over two feet in size, which would be Tiny.

d20pfsrd is known to pass off their own interpretations as fact. Don't rely on them for rules text. Official paizo prd stipulates the rules as follows: http://legacy.aonprd.com/ultimateCombat/combat/firearms.html

Guns are still stupid weapons though. They require odd feat and itemization choices, they are fired as ranged touch attacks, and they have misfiring rules that regularly cause the gunslinger to debuff himself. Reasonably speaking no one really wants to play with PF gunslinging rules.

I'd recommend just playing GURPS Dungeon Fantasy and adding GURPS's firearm rules to that if you want guns and magic or just merge GURPS Steampunk if you want to run an Arcanum-esque campaign.

Don't dis the hat! Inquisitor is pretty good, especially if you take Divine Huntsman or an Animal Domain.

Arcane casters are still a must-have though. You could probably get away with a Bard or Magus, but Haste is worth the slot by itself, Mage armor can be cast on pets, Stinking Cloud basically takes the shotgun approach to enemy saves making every enemy save every round, so somebody is going to fail it. There are a few other good spells too. I'm not saying it has to be your main character, but Sorcerer is a Charisma class and Sylvan Sorcerer also gets a pet. It's a good idea to make your main character someone with max persuasion because that's the most common skill check you need when your party isn't available (you are supposed to be a monarch, of course you need diplomacy!)

for awhile that that was true, but now it seems like anything with a "Will/fort negates" is basically a waste to cast. Went into the last supper room in the lich cyclops dungeon, tried to drop a Undeath to death spell on the horde. Maybe like two zombies actually died from it. 2c4f57  No.15603111

Mostly just the delayed spell list. It takes 2-3 more levels for the eldrich scoundrel to access most spells, meaning you won't get Haste until level 7 for instance. They are also behind in spell slots.

Compared to magus, they are obviously worse at casting in combat. They don't have any bonus to casting in armor. A magus can cast in light armor with no spell failure at level 1, and gains the same effect for medium and heavy armor at later levels (even bards can cast in light armor). An Eldrich Scoundrel does not gain the same benefit, and also loses the rogue's armor proficiency.

Compared to rogues, no armor, lower sneak attack, fewer Feats, no advanced talents (rogue advanced talents are pretty damn good).

a4c246  No.15603124

>>15603090

Nothing you get is good for the level you get it. Level a rogue to 3, then wizard to 3, then arcane trickster all the way to 10. When the arcane trickster reaches level 8, you will have reached the maximum caster level of an eldritch scoundrel, but 2 levels sooner, and you'll have passed up their sneak attack progression.

Eldritch Scoundrel is a trap.

2c4f57  No.15603126

>>15603111

Also I forgot to mention, the Bard spell list actually gets things that Wizards don't, as well as several Wizard spells at lower levels. For instance, Cure (light/moderate/severe) Wounds is not a wizard spell at all. The spell "Good Hope", which is basically an AoE heroism, is Bard only, so neither Wizards nor Clerics ever get it. Greater Shout is bard level 6, but sorc/wiz level 8, Hideous Laughter is Bard 1 sorc/wiz 2.

It why when they were allowed to do whatever they wanted, they pulled MoTB.

Pathfinder didn't do shit to blasters, (in fact they might have slightly buffed them) because those spells were already considered utter trap options in 3/3.5E due to the hp bloat of all the monsters and total wastes of a spell slot. What PF nerfed were all the save of die spells, which is why you get spells like "finger of death" being a shitty arcane version of "Harm" doing a flat amount of damage instead of flat out killing a person regardless of hit points on a failed save like it used to.

So what are best spells for wizzards/sorcs?

60a8c0  No.15608932

Coming into this from not having played much tabletop stuff, there's a lot of stuff in this game (from pathfinder rules I guess) that I really dislike. The feats for example are a giant cluster fuck . 95% of feats are complete shit (take a +2 on any knowledge world or dick sucking checks), 2.5% of them are completely vital for getting your archetype to run right, and the other 2.5% are shitty abilities that are prerequisites to the vital portion. The worst part about all this is that most of the vital feats aren't even cool enhancements. They're shit you should have had from the start that got ripped out of your class for some reason or another. Dex scaling on daggers shouldn't be a feat; that should be the default. For some reason though they broke it into 3 feats to get a single weapon type to properly scale with dex. Archers shouldn't have to take point blank, a feat that sounds like shit (if you're shooting your bow at point blank you're eating attacks of opportunity), to stop the -4 penalty for targets in combat with precise shot. If I pumped 20 dex to be able to reliably shoot past teamates, then I shouldn't need a feat too. It's even weirder that wizards also need to take those same two feats. It's particularly weird when you consider that the feats use language like "ranged weapons" and players have to make the jump from thinking that the wizard's fire ray is a spell to thinking about it as a "ranged weapon".

The whole pacing of the game feels really off. My party could probably go months without returning to town, but they'll drop dead if they don't take a nap every 15 minutes. Everything in the world seems to die kind of fast, and I just don't feel like that trait combines well with an rng heavy combat system. I also don't particularly love the state of crowd control abilities. Why make it random whether it succeeds or not? They should have gone about making crowd controls weaker in some other way than a random chance to fail. They had options: cc spells could have been higher level, they could have made the low end ccs less restrictive on the target, they could have chosen to give more guaranteed immunities/reduction of effects based on situational things (ex: heavily drilled soldiers are resistant to fear and need to be hit with 2 sources to proc the effect, a character that just got a good nights rest is immune to sleep, a character that has been walking around in the sun is resistant to blind because his eyes are adjusted to heavy light, etc). However, they decided a shitty dice roll would be the best solution.

The whole system is just so convoluted. I feel like I need to look into getting a pathfinder lawyer on retainer so I can figure out things as simple as which aspects of my character scale with which stat. The whole (pathfinder) system reeks of feature creep by a bunch of devs who were very very loosely working with one another. The system combines the rng of Mario Party with years of balance patches that strip the fun out of multiplayer games, and it presents it all in the most esoteric way possible. Christ, I'm not opposed to learning a large set of rules in whatever I'm playing, but what I've seen of this rule set makes me think the pay off won't be worth the time investment.

2c4f57  No.15608978

>>15608855

Buffs and "Save or Suck" spells mainly. My two favorites are Stinking Cloud and Haste. Haste should be pretty obvious, it's one of the single most powerful buffs in the game, it basically makes everyone in your party twice as good overall. Stinking Cloud is the best "save or suck" spell you can possibly ask for. It affects a wide area for a long period of time, you can make your own party immune to it (delay poison communal), and if the enemy fails even one save they may as well be dead (can't attack or cast spells, and the AI never tells them to run out of the cloud)

Just to give you a quick rundown, here's what my sorc has at level 14:

>Level 1 Spells

Mage Armor

Shield

Entangle (free)

Hurricane Bow

Magic Missile

Burning Hands

Hurricane bow is a minor buff, but it's long enough duration that it's worth casting. Mage armor stacks on pets, shield stacks with anything the sorc has. Magic Missile and Burning Hands give me an "auto hit" and an AoE/fire spell if absolutely necessary, they rarely are.

I SHOULD have reduce and/or enlarge person. Reduce is great for Wizards/sorcs because it increases AC and touch attack at the cost of weapon damage (they dont care). Enlarge SHOULD grant reach to melee.

>Level 2

Sense Vitals

Hideous Laughter (free)

Mirror Image

Scorching Ray

Web

Molten Orb

Sense vitals is short duration, but not bad for increasing the sorcs passive damage and/or on the rare chance I might use Scorching Ray (sneak attack on every ray). Hideous Laughter is great at lower levels as a disabling spell (save or suck). Mirror Image is one of the best ways to keep a mage alive if things go badly. Web has some cheesy uses but I mostly don't bother myself. Molten orb was filler.

>Level 3

Haste

Deep Slumber (free)

Resist Energy Communal

Stinking Cloud

Heroism

Haste and Stinking Cloud I already explained. Almost anyone in my party could cast Resist Energy Communal (The spell doesnt say in game, but it goes up to 20 and later 30 resistance as you level), but sometimes I cast it a bunch of times, so the sorc gets it. Heroism is a long duration buff. I also have Greater heroism, but far fewer casts of it.

>Level 4

Controlled Fireball

Poison (free)

Confusion

Greater Invisibility

Enervation

Controlled fireball helps if I need to drop an AOE on my own party, like say if there are a bunch of swarms I need to take care of. I rarely use it, but it's a lot safer than fireball which I would pretty much never use (so I don't learn it). Combined with Resist Energy it's guaranteed to do no damage to friendlies.

Poison is trash, confusion was kind of a mistake. I was misled to believe it only targeted enemies, which is untrue. It IS an AOE "save or suck" so it's not that bad, but stinking cloud is better. Enervation allows me to reduce a targets saving throw, it's a touch attack with no save on its own, so as long as I can hit touch AC I can reduce even the toughest enemies. Greater Invis is kind of too short to be too much use, but it is a nice buff.

1/2

2c4f57  No.15608979

>>15608978

>Level 5

Animal Growth

Vinetrap (free)

Constricting Coils

Fire Snake

Animal Growth is what I cast most here. I have 3 pets, so I need 3 casts of it and don't want to occupy all of my druids spell slots at this level. Vinetrap and Constricting coils are basically the same spell (Hold monster + Damage). Both can take a single target out of the fight for a while, The difference is that Vinetrap targets Reflex saves and is not mind-affecting, meaning it works on undead, while Constricting Coils targets Will saves and is mind affecting. Coupled with Stinking cloud earlier, this means I can choose any save my enemy has, will, reflex, or fortitude and try to beat their weakest save.

Fire snake is party-friendly damage again. I like having ONE damage spell, even if I never use it, just in case. My character also has Fire specialization (higher saves) because of a spell on the next level, so I focus mainly on fire spells.

>Level 6

Sirocco

Greater Heroism

Greater Dispel Magic (free)

Sirocco is a very powerful spell. It combines both good damage and Save-or-suck power in one spell. It lasts Caster Level turns doing 4d6+CL damage every turn, fort save for half (which I can maximize with a rod). More importantly, if the enemy fails their fort save they are knocked prone. Furthermore, if they take any damage at all from Sirocco they become Fatigued, and if they take damage again they become Exhausted. Combine Sirocco with Web or Entangle and the enemy simply can't get out, which makes it a great way to solo entire groups of enemies, especially the kind of shit you don't want to let anywhere near your melee, like level draining Specters.

Greater Heroism is a strong buff, but the main benefit for me is +4 skill checks, which saves me a hell of a lot of savescumming on traps/locks, lore checks, and persuasion attempts.

>Level 7

Firebrand

There's literally nothing here I actually wanted to take. Firebrand is just a short duration AOE buff that adds 1d6 fire damage to everyone in my party (including pets). It's not terrible, but it's not really "level 7" good either. Prismatic Spray is a very common choice, but I don't like how random and potentially team-killing it is. Another good option is Legendary Proportions, which is like Animal Growth for non-animals. Problem is that one has a material component that I hate using.

Worth mentioning, My Druid casts all the Animal Aspect buffs and Stoneskin (communal) if/when necessary, so my Sorc doesn't need any of those. Keep in mind which spells other casters in your party can cast that you don't need to use 5 times, and you can skip those on the Sorc.

I would agree with some of your points had you not chosen some of the worst examples that make you look like a retard. Feat taxing is a genuine issue in Pathfinder, as is too many completely terrible options that offer little to nothing for any character. The system has also been falling apart more and more, as they just cram random shit into it so they can sell more books.

>if you're shooting your bow at point blank you're eating attacks of opportunity

It sounds like you are just reading titles and scanning text for numbers with pluses on them. Point-blank shot explicitly describes itself as working when within 30 feet of your target. Unless you're fighting gigantic dragons wielding longspears, you're fine.

Also, basically every RPG/war game penalizes players for shooting into melee. Some games just straight up refuse to let you do it, some give you a chance to hurt your allies. Here, you can freely attack enemies engaged in melee using your ranged weapons with nothing but a 20% reduced chance to hit. If you did raise your numbers high enough and are fighting something that isn't hard to hit, you can actually ignore that.

>It's particularly weird when you consider that the feats use language like "ranged weapons" and players have to make the jump from thinking that the wizard's fire ray is a spell to thinking about it as a "ranged weapon".

Spells explicitly say if they make an attack or not. That's not really a jump when the spell directly says "make a ranged attack".

>cc spells could have been higher level, they could have made the low end ccs less restrictive on the targetmaking crowd controls weaker in some other way than a random chance to fail.

Good news - many crowd control options above low level spells have a reduced effect if the save is made, as opposed to no effect.

>heavily drilled soldiers are resistant to fear and need to be hit with 2 sources to proc the effect, a character that just got a good nights rest is immune to sleep, a character that has been walking around in the sun is resistant to blind

Fighters do have fear resistance as a class ability though. Paladins have it best, and extend it to everyone. Barbarians don't and shouldn't because they're dumb superstitious tribesmen who talk to totems. I don't know what your eyes being adjusted to the sunlight have to do with stopping a necromancy spell from ruining your eyes or going blind from poison. If you're referring to the Flare spell that gives you the dazzled condition, then I don't know if I'd bother arguing whether or not a flashbang going off in your face should give you the -1 penalty to attack for one turn while outdoors or not. A magical spell called 'Sleep' doesn't make you drowsy and fall asleep because you're tired. It flicks your brain into sleep mode, whether you're tired or not.

Your post hurts to read because you chose the most casual/retarded shit to be upset about with a system that barely functions and is absolutely crammed full of shit to be upset about. I also don't know how you made this leap from rules/crowd control are obscure/difficult, to wanting a spell where you can say, "no that creature is immune to your spell, it just took a nap." If I ever cast crowd control on a bandit and a game told me that it had no effect because they were tucked in real good about an hour ago, I'd delete that shit in a heartbeat.

Anyone know how to disable defensive casting?

Randomly, my magus just started using it in every battle, locking me out of melee combat.

2c4f57  No.15610174

>>15610149

That's not what defensive casting does. In this game, "defensive casting" is just a roll to see if you can cast a spell without triggering an attack of opportunity. It does nothing else, pass the roll you don't trigger an attack, fail the roll and you do.

98aee3  No.15610185

>>15610174

no, literally, it says "casting defensively", a little blue hand icon appears over the character and I can't actually attack anyone.

I think I'm pretty justified in saying that precise shot working for wizards is weird.

>You can shoot or throw ranged weapons at an opponent engaged in melee without taking the standard –4 penalty on your attack roll.

from https://www.d20pfsrd.com/feats/combat-feats/precise-shot-combat-final/. Yeah, they're specifically talking about ranged weapons. I'm guessing you're pretty used to the system because from the outside thinking about the wizard hurling a ball of fire from his hands doesn't equate to a ranged weapon. A weapon seems like it needs to be more tangible or solid. In the abstract a fist or magic can be wielded as weapons, but that's not the first thing that comes to mind in that situation. I'd categorize the fireball as a ranged attack sure, but it just doesn't seem like a weapon. As for point blank shot, yeah, when you have that many abilities a proper name is damn important, and I don't think 30ft really counts as point blank. The idea of getting a small bonus for getting into "point blank" range as an archer (in a game where that is heavily penalized) doesn't really sound like that great of an ability. So I stand by saying that it sounds like shit. It does unless you bother to look closely enough at how they've defined point blank range.

>I also don't know how you made this leap from rules/crowd control are obscure/difficult, to wanting a spell where you can say, "no that creature is immune to your spell, it just took a nap"

In regards to the cc immunity part, it was just me trying to say that the dice roll for saving throw system is terrible. It's not a design that lends itself to good gameplay, and it wasn't meant to be. The constant dice rolling in tabletop is meant to make interesting situations for the group. It is meant to enhance the party aspect of the game. A situation where you encounter a mob using instant death spells is a lot more engaging for the group when he is rolling dice to see how badly he'll fuck someone over. It's also shit game design though.

>Your post hurts to read because you chose the most casual/retarded shit to be upset about

Well, I've only casually learned the rules of the game so I probably wouldn't know much about its deeper problems. However, if you're telling me that the system has worse problems than the staggering amounts of feature creep held together with duct tape, extremely esoteric rules, and an insane reliance on rng, then I think I'm right in deciding not to take it too seriously.

except I wouldn't be able to finish an Obsidian game because it's boring and uninspired with Sawyer's crap ideas stuffed in. Pillars may have been buggy, but I never could last long enough to get to the bugs since the prologue and chapter one were such a snooze.

Why haven't any of these retro RPGs come with a solid suite of modding tools? Why hasn't anybody tried to make the next NWN or FRUA? I think Realms Beyond is the first one I've seen in ages that even advertises campaign creation as a primary feature.

The age of consumer modding tools is dead. You can't sell content hungry people pieces of DLC or shark cards if people can make their own mods. Rock star tried to shut down GTA V modding only after realizing they were losing cash, and will almost certainly have RDR2 locked down from the vary start. Bethesda is going to use online balance as an excuse to limit FO76 modding, and will probably use "it's a new engine, sorry, we can't allow open modding for legal issues" as an excuse to kill it for starfield and TES6.
