What are some games that left you depressed after you finished them?
I just finished Rimworld and I feel hollow, all those colonists who didn't survive the raids, all the pets who died or were left behind, and the colonists who did survive are stuck on a ship for an indefinite amount of time.
Talk about games that made you sad either because of bad endings or attachment.

Xenoblade 1 and 2 both kind of did this for me, mostly since they are at least 60 hour playthroughs and I really learned to empathize with the characters and like them.
Honestly now that I think of it, a lot of JRPGs are like this, probably due to the length.

Does overwatch count since you cant really "finish" it?
every time I play it I feel like im playing some fucking disney game designed by my aunt or something, its just so lifeless, sterile, unfun. theres no humor to it, because there cant be, anything more incorrect than "hiya winston!" will get the hammer down on them from big sister who doesnt even like the game really. everyone playing it is either a weird slutty girl thats not even above 6/10 so they arent worth the time, or a fucking little kid who just picked up his first video game, or some SJW freak that reports you for the mildest offensives or being "toxic" in ranked
but thats not really whats depressing ive seen this shit before IRL or in games. I can deal with disphit kids that somehow dont know how to play bastion. I can deal with SJW freaks that have ruined the colleges anyways.
the depressing part is when I remember that this is a game made by blizzard. Except its not really blizzard, its activision who snuck into blizzards house, raped him to death and then cut off his skin to wear it as a macabre costume. I remember when blizzard was about fun, jokes, pentagrams, burning crosses and innovative gameplay. I remember when blizzard was a small thing, when only me and a few nerds at middle school even knew about blizzard because we all played WC3 and D2, before WoW hit and it got really big and everyone started playing. Those were the good times, the ripeness of blizzards time, the prime of its life.
That blizzard is long dead and will never come back, and the closest I can get is playing free russian WC2 clients. Modern wow, diablo 3, SC2 and overcuck feel like a bad joke, or just an insult. Actually, if we are going with a game that left me genuinely depressed after beating them, lets go with D3. I think that was when it really sank in how fucked blizzard was, and I shouldnt have to make this rant any longer to explain how.

I don't know if any game ever left me felling depressed. I honestly don't know what that feels like. I've felt sad for a time but I've never felt what, at least I see on the internet, as "depressed".
Video games have sometimes left me with something to think about either externally or in an introspective sense…but I've never felt DEPRESSED.
I can say i've been playing games at least since the NES era and mixed in platform since then. All sorts of consoles, PC, emulators, etc…
There's a bitter sweetness in the completion of every game if you think about it.
Like graduating from high-school or college. Like moving on from peon worker to manager.
There is a realm you knew and you've reached the completion of. Something that you can NEVER truly go back to because you already experienced it and if it was something that was in the popular culture you're not ever riding that same wave.
But never have I ever felt bad for the fact of completing of a game nor have I ever been left feeling bad even with the context of the game completion. It's done, its message is given…and that's it. On to the next one.
Honestly, the only game that should leave you depressed when it comes to finishing them is life.

The Breath of Fire series took a good chunk of time to go through and in that time became an influential experience in my life. And when that's done, it takes a while to reflect and find another game or whatnot you feel pulled towards, and that's when the depression / sadness hits in. The sort of feeling that you're unsure if you'll find another marvelous piece of media that can effect your life in strange ways and make you think about things in new ways. An existential crisis if you will, that you'll never be able to experience possibly everything you'd ever want to.

This is some poorly translation from a spaniard video I saw a while ago, but it nails everything I loved and made me cry about the Lisa games:
>When we decide whether to lose the arm or save a member of the team, the game takes a radical turn. The general response, conditioned by our ethical code, would be to sacrifice ourselves and lose our arm without hesitation.
>Lisa tries to make each sacrifice count, making the game much more difficult if we make the decision to sacrifice ourselves. In fact, we can finish the game without both arms (barely) and trusting that our partners do all the work, if by then they're still alive. But there is no reward for sacrificing. You lose your arm, your partner is still alive, the game continues. Without any kind of prize for being a good guy.
>About Joy: the game shows us in the initial cutscene how Brad consumes Joy to deal with his memories, but if we choose not to take Joy and stay sober, the game will not reward us for it. It will only be more difficult. When Brad suffers from withdrawal, he will not be able to attack during his turns, which will make the toughest fights in the game almost impossible if luck is not on our side.
>Because that is what sacrifice consists in: knowing that there will be no reward, but pain. But at least you have done the right thing.
>Pain is a recurring theme throughout the game. The pain in the story of Brad and Buddy deforms love, transforms it into an incomprehensible feeling that we can not easily translate.
>But the most interesting part of this is that the pain we are talking about is represented explicitly in a concrete silhouette.
>Throughout the game, Lisa Armstrong is present. She's the one who gives the name to all three games, because she starts the entire chain of events of the story. Her suffering, her death, her memory transform Brad forever, and this is the motor that drives his relationship with Buddy. Lisa is a sad ghost that watches us from afar, tormenting our protagonist and conditioning the life of Buddy from the beginning.
>Scarred by the death of his sister, Brad tries to protect Buddy from a meaningless world. In his obsession, he completely ignores her liberty, and ends up becoming the tyrant he despised in his childhood.
>Because Lisa is a cycle of pain and a cycle of love in equal parts. Broken people who try to love and end up hurting the process. People who hurt because they do not know how to love. And everything repeats again and again without remedy.
>Lisa is a love story. a story of unconditional love. And love does not always consist of beautiful stories filled with hugs, kisses and happy endings, but people trying to do good things for others. And as the human beings we are, inevitably fail, at some point, over and over again.
>Looking at it in some perspective, the game poses Brad as a villain, but in reality, Brad was a person who unconditionally loved a girl who represented everything that was left in his life. His second chance, His possibility of redemption.
>The story of all these characters is a story of pain because in reality its a story of misunderstood love It's a story of people who love, but don't know how to do it or express it, and the pain they have suffered in their life has completely conditioned their behavior with their loved ones.
>Lisa Amstrong died because her memories of his abusive fater, Martin, couldn't be erased and drove her to suicide
>Brad turned into a monster because his memories of Lisa chased him until the end of his days.
>Buddy unleashes chaos upon the rest of the human race because her memories of Brad have taken away her hope in humanity
>Everything is a cycle of pain between people who are so broken that they do not know how to love.
>And everything starts all over again.

Shit description. Brad, under no circumstances, "became the tyrant he despised in his childhood." This isn't a case like that Australian pedo who kept a girl locked in his basement for her whole life. Any sane man would keep a close eye on their daughter if they were living in the same world Brad was living in. Mad men around every corner, and considering that buddy is a girl, she certainly would not be given any mercy in a world without women. Even in Rando's care, she wouldn't be safe. She'd probably be made to bear children way too young, which could very well end up killing her. Buddy's "liberty being taken away" is a very small price to pay, no different from paying taxes to a feudal kingdom in exchange for safety within it's walls, safe from the barbarians and mongolians.

I always interpreted Brad in the only way I could, because I felt I related to him very closely. Brad's a dude that knew the world was going to swallow Buddy whole, and not allow her to be a person - a real human being. Yes, he sheltered her but he tried to make her life decent which says all about Brad that I could ever hope to. He's the only person that wants her to live a normal life. He's a guy that is hopelessly, helplessly impaled on his humanity.

It's more bitter than bittersweet. If you remember, all four main characters had to have their consciousness transferred into robotic bodies before you could fight Giygas, meaning all four characters are either dead or stuck eternally conscious in lifeless bodies that, I assume, eventually ran out of juice.
They didn't just save the world. They sacrificed their lives for it.

The best kind of games do that, really. People will complain about how story in games are unnecessary but the ones you remember most are the ones that leave a lasting feel that you were actually part of them. You remember the characters, and the universe they were in. That's a big victory for a game.
Like Ace Combat, for example. To this day the only games that still pull strings on me are AC4, 5 and Zero. Great gameplay, but also great stories. In fact the story carries the Ace Combat series the hardest out of all aspects. It's the only franchise I keep coming back to every year.

I rarely finish things these days. Mostly because they're shit and I can't stand the experience of playing them. When it comes to the rare games I actually enjoy, I often just stop halfway through because I know how much I love it and don't want to experience the emptiness that comes after coming down off of my escapism high and reentering reality. Another reason contributing to this is that don't want to see it retroactively ruined by the fact that 99% of all games ever made have terrible endings that retroactively shit on what I enjoyed about the game.
This combination results in total inaction on my part where I tell myself that I'll go back and finish it but get cold feet any time I consider it.

VTMB. It hurt knowing there was never any other game like it, and there never would be again. The same for FNV, but at least FNV has a thriving mod community so you keep getting content. VTMB is that one great game that will never be properly replicated because most of the talent comparable has left the industry, or is too scattered to regather, and was a product of another time, with different fashion styles and genres that no longer exist in gaming.
