You can kill certain monsters and ride them to get around certain areas. There's a more in depth skill system which looks almost exactly the Mantra grid from DDS but I don't know much about it really other than it lets you use completely different weapon types for some characters(the hero in particular can dual wield, use a two handed sword or go classic sword and shield combo). There's also some smithing forge minigame thing that lets you make more in depth custom weapons apparently but to what degree I'm not sure.

If learning moon at least had some kind of a practical application for me outside of playing anime tiddy games that will never come to the west I could possibly consider the investment of my ever-dwindling free time to get it done, but that is not the case.

I'm willing to pass on games with shit localization and pay for the convenience of localizations that do a decent job. I don't need laser-perfect accuracy for these games, especially when most of them are loaded with banal chatter. From what I've read in DJT threads a lot of you guys can't even agree among yourselves which translation is truly "correct", even though you're saying the same exact thing with slightly different phasing. A lot of translation stuff seems ultra subjective when people start putting in their little nitpicks. Half the time the arguments are over shit like:

The battle system reminded me of Quest 64 at first, which was actually pretty neat. Then I realized that, unlike Quest 64, you can't actually avoid enemy attacks by moving out of the line of fire, because there isn't really a line of fire to begin with. All the hit mechanics are pure dice rolls.

Then I realized that party arrangement didn't matter either, since you can hit any enemy regardless of distance, and the same holds true the other way around.

And finally, since you can cover the entire distance of the battle field during your turn, running to the edge only requires a single turn at any time, so there's no fear of being too far from the edge of the arena. Not that it would matter anyways, since "Flee" is a fucking menu option, making trying to run away by moving around pointless.

This whole system feels like they started on something more interesting and complex, then scaled it back because it was too different from the standard Dragon Quest combat.

I really like exploring the towns, there's lots of vertical space to explore and search and the towns feel large and populated, not quite Xenoblade scale but still more than TES. I REALLY like the way they changed the skill system to a more FF10 style thing, it's more interesting than the old system where you just pumped points in until 100. 8/10 so far

My first time through 8 I had everyone but Yangus equipped with swords.

So, I returned to the Heliodor region after getting the magic key, and I've noticed that the game consistently crashes in particular spots in that region now. Exiting Emerald Coast from the North is one of them, and the other is the cave between the entrance to Cobblestone and the first campsite in the game.

Both times, passing through these areas causes the game to "skip" for about half a second, followed by a crash warning. The game is still playable despite the warning, and if there's a goddess statue in the area you can even save your game, but attempting to load that save or exit into a loading screen causes the game to soft lock.

If it weren't for the autosave feature, this error would be catastrophic. It would be entirely possible to go through around twenty hours of playtime and then permanently break your save. If you don't alternate with multiple saves, you'd be shit out of luck.
