They are linear but it's possible to get lost and fuck yourself over so really it's a bit in the middle, at least for the earlier ones.

There is a world map that is rather large for the era but keep in mind this is mid to late 1980s. 3 is about on par in terms of size with the first FF world map for the sake of comparison.
In terms of how open it is you go from one are to the next, each having about two or more towns, until you get the boat which is when the game opens up significantly and then you eventually get to the "find every hidden thing" part of the game which opens up the way to the final area. That's really every DQ game pacing in a nutshell except for 7. 7 is pretty much Banjo Kazooie with time travel.

3 goes from good to legendary if you can play and enjoy at least the first game for the sake of seeing how far it came. As for the best that stand out on their own I'd say 5 but none of the other games in the series are like it so it might give you a wrong impression. Also, only play the remakes because they cut down on grinding and speed up the menus considerably, at least until the 3DS ones which were fucked up in localization.

US PS2. It got an overhaul to appeal to western audiences with more advanced battle animations, orchestrated music, and voice acting. I believe the DS version lacks most of these features. Everyone is afraid of the DQ8 symphonic suite music, and I don't get why. Dragon Quest Heroes 1&2 had the symphonic suite music for the battle themes of all of the games, but DQ8 had the original music. Why do they shun this so much?

The PS2 version in Japan had chiptune music which was remastered in orchestral for the rest of the world. The 3DS version has the orchestral in Japan while the rest of the world gets the original chiptune
The official reason the orchestral was sacrificed internationally was to make room for the voice acting by britbong soap opera actors (love it or hate it, it's not without its charm)

DQ World Map can be weird, it's linear in the sense that there's a path they want you to follow, BUT you can still do some parts out of order, and often times they don't tell you where you're supposed to go. I did that back in Dragon Quest IX when they first turn you loose.

I assume there’s something in the world I’m missing and I’m not just supposed to grind my face off in between barely connected boss fights. DQ3 was open, but I felt you unlock the boat at a more appropriate time and the world feels more alive with stuff to do in between objectives.

I should probably also point out the reason 4 feels so weird in terms of pacing is because the game forces you into the same level bracket 4 times in a row over the span of multiple different continents, meaning that by the time you actually start the meat of the game you've seen half of the world map and it doesn't take but an hour or two to get the boat after which you have a grand total of like three areas to explore that you haven't already seen and only one of which you won't die immediately getting near. The game just feels rushed as all hell and I don't think they got to implement the chapter idea as well as they originally hoped to. What could've been the Mega Man of JRPGs ended up just being a rehash where you play the first 10 levels 5 times over for no good reason. At least the final boss was great.
977091 No.15374689
>>15370512
Yes. And by explore, the game doesn't give you a mandate to move onto the next town, doesn't tell you where anything is and you have to find the next step in the story yourself.
The games usually star out with a town to town story, but you usually get a mode of transportation like a ship or an air vehicle and when you do the world opens up for exploration at the mid point and then the late point of the game.
The difficulty is such that if you skip fights you WILL have a hard time. Buffs and Debuffs are actually useful and are key to breaking the game in half at the end when you can find the optional metal slime grind area, access the Casino's best prizes, and so on. And doing so is expected to survive the secret bosses.
Final Fantasy is ALWAYS a railroad because the story drives the player towards the next goal but some games work with this, while Dragon Quest has a passive approach and the player is the one that must continue on to search for the next area.
The only game that I can say railroads the most is Dragon Quest 6, but instead of preventing you from going anywhere, it guides you from town to town via an extremely well designed map terrain that requires the player to find the means to pass through areas themselves. It doesn't force anything on you.

Accents, unnecessary expenditure as they were even then, at least work better with spoken dialogue. Trying to flood a script that's text-only with them causes legibility issues for those unfamiliar with how to actually read them (compared to standard English), which is what Square seems so intent on, to the point apparently having to weigh the extra editing costs against even bringing them west to begin with, as if the series can't be parted from it now here.

Patch is still on beta lot’s of text bug but fully playable up to the end. Okay this time I got the chance to finally play the game and see all the bugs myself and hopefully fixed all of it. played and finished the game 6 times during testing and I hope everything all good. Special thanks to Zangetsu who convinced to continue porting at the game, since I’ve already drop the project a year ago (he’s also porting it to French) and Illynir who tested the patch from start to finish.
>What’s Translated:
>v0.7 (beta)

>v0.9
> – Fixes Font files
> – Added Accent characters on text input
> – Fixed untranslated images
> – Fixed Boss image names

> – Use English icons for Save’s

> – EULA on online mode, (EULA for the English version is too damn long)
> – Game title on PARAM.SFO remain in japanese (well you could easily edit it)
> – Maybe small stuffs I’ve over looked and didn’t noticed
> – Trophies remain in Japanese, I don’t think it’s a good idea to mess with it.
>Known minor Bugs:
> – Some buttons on character input screen for PS3 inject since no eboot mods on Retail (CFW/ODE PS3 are fine, more info, bellow)
> – Some workstation name are too long that they overshoot the text window, but still readable
> – Skill name is too long that they overshoot the text window, but still readable
>Additional Notes:
>*This patch is compatible with Retail, CFW PS3, ODE PS3, PS3 inject method and on RPS3
I don't really see anything specific about name corrections. Most cases like this of taking the existing script and putting it into another version tend to be just straight up script rips, unless there's major differences between what we got and the version in question (like Nier).

I tried playing VIII, my first dragon quest game, after buying on ebay for my PS2 a few weeks ago. Loved the graphics, style, music and characters. But damn, the game was just so stretched out. I think I'm too impatient / old to play JRPGs now since this is symptomatic of the genre but random battles are like 50%+ of the total game time.
I can't do it. I got up to the Dhoulmagus (sp?) fight, which is supposedly not even halfway through the game, and had to stop. I needed to grind quite a few levels to beat him but I couldn't be bothered. It would be hours of battles which by that point had become so fucking tedious.
Does anyone else experience this? I played Final Fantasy V to completion in one sitting a few months ago on an emulator because it had a 10x fast forward function that made grinding and random encounters in general a total breeze. JRPGs need to have a proper FF function (and not just 2x).

DQ I and II are linear in that if yo udon't know what the fuck you're suppoed to do or where to go, you'll get assraped by overleveled monsters since you can go everywhere but the final level basically.
The story itself is linear. You get the first macguffin and you find out where you have to go for the next, rinse and repeat until you're at the Dracolord's castle.
9 was much more linear that I remember. Very episodic in that way. You travel to one town and help the people in that place. Then you travel to another town and you help those people. It's a journey from point a to point b, like a road trip, not a sandbox

As someone who usually heavily scrutinizes Musous, gonna say DQH is a good one, but Hyrule Warriors is a lot better at being a Musou. Dragon quest Heroes 1 has a handful of Characters but the upside is they make those characters a lot more interactive with each other to forgo a bit of customization per character. Hyrule Warriors simply has more characters with a lot having multiple weapons which add multiple playstyles.
So if you want more of a pure Musou, Hyrule Warriors is better, if you want more of an Rpg with Musou combat, Dragon Quest Heroes is better for that.

Dragon Quest 3 and 5 are the highlights of the series, with 5 being my personal favorite and according to interviews, the series creator's personal favorite too
heres a rundown for suggested versions because I didn't see one in the thread yet
All versions are fantranslations unless otherwise stated, all official localizations starting with DQ4 DS are irredeemable garbage
1 and 2: SNES
3: SNES
4: As mentioned earlier in the thread, there's a 99% finished english translation on the Japanese cartridge of the DS remake if you access it with a cheat code. If a lack of editing and the (2 minute long) prologue being untranslated aren't dealbreakers, go with that. Otherwise, SNES fantranslation.
5: PS2. DS for a second playthrough if you want the alternate character, but bear in mind the localization is far, far worse than the PS2 fantranslation and the game is back to 2D.
6: DS if you can read Japanese, SNES otherwise
7: PS1
8: PS2
9: DS only. If you can't read Japanese, you're gonna have a really bad time.
Also, if you end up liking Dragon Quest 5 as much as I did, after finishing it you might enjoy reading a manga titled, I shit you not, "How I stalked some dude with an exposed nipple and stumbled upon the Zenithian Sword". It's the story of the game seen through the eyes of a side character and it's a fun read, but only after beating the game because it contains major spoilers.

I figured I'd do a little list of all the tracks in 11 that are from older entries and when they appear, because I'm bored and the other thread hit the bump limit. I'll be using the English names by the way.
>DQ2: Catastrophe, plays in the opening when Hargon wrecks Moonbrooke castle. notable for debuting in the NES release
>plays in 11 when your dad fights off the demons invading Heliodor in a flashback
>DQ3: Prologue, the theme from the remakes when you do the personality test at the beginning
>plays pretty much whenever there's a flashback of any kind. happens a lot towards the end
>DQ3: Distant Memories, the theme that plays when you get news that your dad diedboth times
>plays whenever there's a "sad" flashback pretty much
>DQ3: X/Jipang, the theme for the Japanese town with the Orochi boss
>plays in the Japanese town, duh. feels kind of shoved in really
>DQ3: Small Shrine, theme that plays at small shrines, duh.
>same for 11 because let's be honest every game has a theme like this and they might as well have just picked the best one than try to come up with a new one again
>DQ3: Heavenly Flight, plays when you fly on Ramia/Lamia
>same in 11 but for the big whale thing and apparently only in the post game
>DQ3: Grueling Fight, plays when you fight Baramos and Zoma's first form. notable for not being in the original NES or Famicom releases
>in 11 plays during all the bonus fights in the post game
>DQ3: Hero's Challenge, plays when you use the orb of light on Zoma, or during the whole fight in the original
>in 11 plays during the real final boss fight you get after resurrecting Veronica
>DQ4: Colosseum Backstage/Stand, actually two themes, playing in the obvious areas at the colosseum
>same for 11, once again feels kinda like a forced callback
>DQ4: Battle for Glory, the standard battle theme and probably my favorite in the series personally
>plays in the colosseum fights in 11
>DQ5: Saint, played at the church you wash up in after you escape from slavery
>plays in 11 at the church after you break out of prison. really subtle callback here because it's not a particularly standout track
>DQ5: Arrival of Spring, plays when you beat the winter queen in the fairy area
>same thing in 11, though it's kind of stupid because you aren't bringing back spring more than you're just unfreezing shit. kinda funny to hear a "flowers are blooming" type track and then still see snow
>DQ6: Saint's Wreath, plays during a lot of the plot portions of the game especially when there's flashbacks
>in 11 it just seems to play randomly when you're at the mermaid area for some reason, which is weird because 6 already had a different underwater theme
>DQ6: Brave Fight, plays during the last phase with Mudo/Murdaw
>in 11 it plays whenever there's something "epic" happening pretty much. I'd say it's overrused
>DQ8: Stalked by Fear, plays whenever the big bad guy shows up
>same in 11, except it's sort of misused because the theme has a motif that appears in 8's final boss theme where it doesn't here. it's also used way too much in places where the villain is just some random goon
>DQ8: Sanctuary, plays in Savella Cathedral or whenever Marcello shows up
>in 11 it plays in the big sage temple where Senya/Serena and Veronika are from
None from 1, which is weird, or 7, 9 and 10 as far as I can tell, but feel free to add if I missed any.

The problems come when you start needing to look for shards, pretty much all of which are horrifically obscure and require you to search every nook and cranny, talk to every NPC, and revisit towns multiple times. It's also possible to permanently fuck yourself over so you need to clean your character inventory often to make sure that doesn't happen.

They really should have just let the game end when you fight the final boss for the first time instead of blueballing you of a fucking conclusion to that godforsaken game.

There isn't any in the PS2 version as far as I'm aware but the 3DS version is heavily censored and just weirdly altered. For example there's a bunch of characters who die in the same way and, in the PS2 version you see exactly how they die in a silent shot while in the 3DS version it usually cuts to black with a really overracted groan. Lots of stupid shit like that making an otherwise good remake annoying.

I'm just getting into the postgame now and I'd say yeah, it's worth playing. Worth clearing 100%? That's a lot tougher to answer. There are severe problems with content padding after the first "half" of the main story. Let's just say that the rate at which you get to see new locations, enemy types etc. slows down dramatically and while it's not as bad about this as many other JRPGs it does make you wonder why they structured the story the way they did if not because they're a pack of cheapskates. Hard to describe better without resorting to spoilers.
It's cracked now anyway so you have nothing to lose if you pirate it. Shipping a modern JRPG at full price with tinny midi music that practically mandates you supply your own soundtrack for the entire 100+ hour adventure is pretty unforgivable. What's more, it's not like you're going to miss out on any future patches or basic tech support by pirating, square enix doesn't believe in these things.
>>15473955
The visual design of the characters doesn't bother me as much as the fact that they're very shallow overall. The party members all get their personal quests (sort of), after which they claim to have developed and become stronger, so that's something…but I don't know man, it's like you never get to know them personally. There's lots of commentary about the party's current objective offered, but they talk to each other sparingly if ever, there's almost no party banter. You WANT to like them - but the constant reminders that they're robotic NPCs is just depressing after a while. Writers and designers really fucked up somewhere. Maybe the camp dialogues should have offered something different from the 'talk' option in the menu. Meh.

Speaking as someone who started the main series due to Builders (playing the third right now), you don't need to play any of the games to "get" the setting of Builders, but it's nice fanservice nonetheless. The map is largely the same as the Alefgard from DQ1 but the remixed music comes from games all the way up to the fourth. Simply put, you'll be fine.
