Kemono Friends was fucking dead, but the studio still had to make an anime, so they gave Tatsuki some money to just do whatever. Through sheer autism he managed to make the Kemono Friends 3D animu you see, he himself made the 3D models and a bunch of other stuff.
Long story short the company saw that the IP was now popular, ignored why it was popular, and decided to throw it to one of their pet directors instead of the guy they threw unwanted shit to, Tatsuki. Tatsuki still had the models and refused to give them to Kadowaka, not only that he also made an extra episode and released it for free on youtube/niko, which really fucking riled up Kadokawa, who wanted to literally take his success away, so they fired him.

I think it varies from place to place, I didn't have to take a single course that involved anything like that. I was required to take a psychology course but that only focused on basic psychology concepts and an introduction to 20th century psychology and the evolution of it into today's schools of thought as well as some evolutionary psych stuff.
The closest I had to any social issue was my geography class because the professor studied was a native guy and he studied the issue of how the diabetes epidemic applies geographically to native populations.
