Just started getting into this game after only ever playing the classics and SOTN. Why does it feel so clunky? Why does the main character look so bad? I don't hate it yet or anything. Are the other GBA Castlevania's worth trying after I finish this one?

The metroid-like CV games are not very good tbh. Only SOTN and COTM are any good. Dracula x on SNES is still the best CV next to rondo of blood.

Yeh, just soldier through that one. Circle of the Moon is a little better and Aria of Sorrow is genuinely good, after that there’s a HUGE quality jump when you get to the DS games.

It's probably the closest thing I can call a leisure game that I play other than the first 3 Dragon Quests at least once every other year or so. Takes maybe 5ish hours to beat and really I only bother because the soundtrack and ambiance is just that good. If the later games weren't stuck on handhelds they'd have surely outdone it in that regard for me.

Circle of the Moon have decent graphics and great music but worse controls, Aria of sorrow is a great improvement over the two. Try playing Dracula X Chronicles next, a decent remake of the game from PC engine and if you're good enough you can unlock the original Rondo of Blood game and the sequel, Symphony of the Night.

Also very important:

PRESS DOWN IN A CASTLE SIDE PORTAL (the ones with the circle) TO TELEPORT TO A DIFFERENT PORTAL YOU'RE ALREADY FOUND.

Between Circle of the Moon and HoD I'd actually say CotM's controls are better. It's definitely more momentum based, but once you get dash and double jump movement throughout the castle is actually decently fun. In HoD movement is very floaty and you start/stop instantly which, while smooth, doesn't really do anything fun (there's no platforming like CotM). Plus in HoD moving at any decent speed requires button mashing (either l/r or slide) which gets annoying quick.

A shame the drop rate is so shit (yet everything comes from drops) in CotM though

Why is everyone praising CotM? I just finished it again the other week and fuck that game. Grinding for the cards is hell and once you get the big summons the game basically plays itself, even Dracula is a total joke in the face of a giant thunderbird, not to mention you have to backtrack all the time because of how many useless power-ups there are. It overall looks and sounds pretty bad too. The controls, while precise are slow as hell if you're not constantly running and the double jump is so pathetically low. And the new game+ codes aren't that fun to fuck around with either. I think HoD is a way better and more enjoyable game than CotM. Having 2 castles like is a very fun imo especially when it's not just done the same way as in SotN and you have to jump between one and the other constantly.

But overall AoS is easily the best gba one. Souls are the shit and playing as Dracula is a cool change of pace. And you even get to play as Julius too.

CotM is a weird one. Getting the ability to move fast so early is great. Making it activate via double tap isn't. Wall jumping is fun. There being so few places where it's used isn't. It's fun finding out the different effects of the card combos. Actually getting the cards is an exercise of frustrating tedium. The music is generally composed well. The sound quality is pretty poor, and a significant portion of the music is just remixes of old tunes.

Of course, there's other problems. More than one new ability is just a "remove this type of block" ability. Quite a few of the rooms, particularly those at dead ends that exist only to hold items for you to find, are copy/pasted. There's even more blatantly palette swapped enemies than in SotN, and the majority of them are the incredibly uncreative "this one is fire, this one is ice, this one is poison" variety. The game tries to have a plot, but it's fairly dull and uninteresting, especially the protagonist.

I like the game, but it's not without it's problems.

Harmony of Dissonance is the worst metroidvania Castlevania. A shame, because i quite like the magic system in that one. A good play on subweapons, even if it makes hearts pretty fucking useless. I'll give a quick opinion on the other metroidvanias you haven't played.

Toss up really. For every great thing (music), there's a bad thing (enemy variation). In general I find it really fun, but your millage will definitely vary. The extra modes are cool too.

>AoS

Really solid, though gets a bit more credit than it deserves. The plot is fucking garbage (the fact that there's no interaction between Soma and Death, who SHOULD know exactly what's going on, is reatarded for instance), and the soul system can be grindy. Overall it's solid though. Julius mode is fun.

>DoS

Aria of Sorrow but better in almost every way. Extra souls have uses, the presentation is obviously upgraded, and the plot is marginally less retarded (though Death still refuses to play a role other than silent boss fight). The reason I get hung up on Death is because he's already established as a character with dialog and interactions, and I find his place in the lore really interesting. The big problem is the magic seals, but honestly the rest of the game makes up for it. Also Julius mode has received an upgrade and honestly it might be my favorite extra mode of any castlevania game.

Another solid entry. Later areas are literal palate swaps of earlier ones, though. The switching mechanic is interesting and handled way better than, say Castlevania III. I quite like it, but nothing really stands out about it. The extra modes are pretty fun.

This one is really good. The story is actually coherent and interesting with good characters! There are side quests, many areas, and the gameplay is different, but not in a bad way. It's probably the most challenging of the metroidvanias, especially the level 1 cap hard mode. The beginning of the game is quite linear though, which i know some dislike. Albus mode is honestly fantastic and is second only to DoS Julius. Having viable gunplay in Castlevania with him is a real treat.

In general, aa the rest of the thread said, things get a lot better at the DS. That being said, my top three are probably SotN, Rondo of Blood, and Order of Ecclesia, with Sotn at the top and the others tied. Yeah, SotN is easy, but there's so much care put into trivial details and so many neat weapons and loadouts and strategies that I can't help but love it.

Harmony of Dissonance is just really mediocre tbh, even the music is a clusterfuck because the dev made the compositions but then compressed them to 8bit or some shit. Even then, the composition for most of them are just… messy. Not even in a decent "avant garde, jazzy" way. They're just not great pieces. There's still two good tracks, though; my favorite being embed related (re-arranged to sound less like dogshit), which is oddly one of my favorite CV tracks.

Circle of the Moon is a lot better, albeit slightly "clunky" in some regards. It's meant to be a bit slower paced, although a dedicated "run" button is a bit… odd, but it works for the platforming segments. It's my personal favorite of the GBA era, just for the overall polish the game has, and for really feeling like a good mix of Classicvania and Metroidvania.

Aria of Sorrow is probably the most solid of the 3, though - lots of goodies to get, and I think the biggest of the GBA games. Not to mention the kickass extra mode. Plays most similarly to Symphony of the Night, though, since you're playing as Not Alucard (AKA Soma Cruz).

They die easily, but the whip isn't quick enough to deal with them effectively when they are harassing while I'm trying to fight something else. Taking damage from them isn't what's annoying. Getting knocked around by them (particularly to a lower floor) is, I lost a drop because of that shit.
