A few days ago Hoppoo Games uploaded their Risk of Rain 2 trailer. Risk of Rain 1 was a 2D pixelart roguelite and for the sequel they decided to go 3D. Snippets of the game in development were uploaded before, but I haven't seen a thread discussing it specifically. So: what are you expecting? Another fun game? Will the 2D-3D transition work? Will the devs be faithful to their roots?

From what I believe has happened is that agdg split up into two divisions, the 8chan logo has the infinity symbol in it and the 4chan logo is square, but I think 8/agdg/ still uses that one as well.

8chan's /agdg/ split off from 4chan somewhere during the first exodus and they're mostly separate, the logo remained the same but there's some alternate visuals for it made here. Hopoo posts dev progress (or at least used to) in 4chan's /agdg/ sometimes, some people post both here and there but I can't recall him ever coming here.

I don't understand the fuss over RoR. Other than the absolutely stellar music, it's just a broken and unfinished indie with low effort microscopic pixelshit that doesn't even have a proper P2P architecture in place, and can be exploited to the point that one guy running around as Bandit with stacked electric guitars can instakill everything just by farting while half your screen is cluttered with fucking item icons. It stopped being fun about one hour in. Glad I got it for free.

This is one of the possibly two games in existence that I'm unironically and without reservation excited about. I've been following the development and they're doing really cool stuff even on the back end to enable eventual expanded gameplay modes or modding. Like coding all enemy types so they could be playable. Items can proc items now too, so a lightning AoE burst on hit item and a rocket launcher produce a rocket that explodes into lightning. All the models are also built in modular chunks that can be swapped out, so the items you pick up along the way will actually replace or append part of your characters' models.

Did I miss something about the first RoR? It had great flavor text, but the actual gamplay was an rng-driven, bullet sponge slog. The enemies spawn so fast and the difficulty increases so fast that if you aren't lucky enough to find the portal very quickly you just sort of lose, buried under a tide of enemies that spawn at double the rate you can kill them, covering the screen in so many hotboxes that dodging becomes impossible. Unless you play the character with the bow and then you just win with zero effort.

Yeah, HP-sponging was a problem. I highly recommend you try it again, but play exclusively with the Glass relic active. It reduces your max HP to 10% but causes all your attacks to do 500% damage, converting the game into a reflex-based crisis-control kind of challenge where nailing your evasion becomes key and enemies die in a few hits. The tempo becomes something more like Dante Must Die mode.

Either way, the endgame is you having enough drones or enough items that you kill the vast majority of enemies without actually touching them, because there's simply too many to fight off yourself. It was a matter of staying mobile and hording items\drones. You had to explore the map very well, always get every single chest or any other source of items because that's what makes you stronger, not your level.
Most levels were basically a loop all around that you could simply do twice in order to open everything, you ever only stop near a chest whenever you don't have enough cash and once you get it and open it, you leg it outta there.
Rushing teleporters never seemed like a good strategy to me, you're just leaving items behind and you're gonna be up against worse shit later on while being weaker.
It was best to get all items, trigger the teleporter and then keep moving to one side while you damage the boss or handle whatever comes after you until the timer is up and then clean house.
Now melee classes however, those I have no fucking idea how you're supposed to use them. When there's an high concentration of enemies in the same place, staying put to attack in melee will have them all land a gazillion attacks at the same time, meaning dead. Acrid can maybe get by with his AIDS carpet but the rest I have no clue, except that the Mercenary has tons of i-frames I guess?

That is wrong though. For one, crowbar greatly affected your damage and soldier's Syringe effectively increased DPS. Both of them are common items. Half the fun in the game is getting all sorts of mad items that stack and interact in great ways.
Secondly, it's about doing things quickly at first, since you need to keep up with the difficulty. You also just have to git gud at it, since there are some tricks to the gameplay. As >>15332423 said, you do get enough time.

That is exactly what I did before I started teleport rushing. You know what happened? By the time I had gotten to area 4, it took me 10 seconds of concentrated fire to kill one fucking basic enemy and in that time 3 more spawned. And guess what? That means it takes even fucking longer because you have to kill every fucking enemy to use the teleporter for some fucking reason. I have found only three ways to win:
1. Teleport rush
2. Banner camp
3. Play bow bitch because she's the only one who can move and shoot at the same time.

It looks okay, but it could go very, very badly. It looks active enough, and none of the enemies strike me as just passive damage soaks. The sense of scale isn't quite as grand as RoR1, but that is likely due to the fact that the enemies in RoR1 would be screen filling and make it impossible to tell what they are doing.

That's not true at all, there's plenty of items that increase your damage, it's just not a direct "+damage".
Like another Anon mentioned, you have Crowbar to help against healthy monsters (great help against bosses) but there's also the Shades that increase your critical chance, thereby giving you more damage, as well as Ukelele, Gasoline, Mortar, Happy Mask etc.
None of those make your shots have bigger numbers for the most part, but they do cause more damage one way or another.
The big deal about items however is to help you survive longer. Loads of them give you Health when shooting or killing guys, reduce damage taken and the like. Those green shrooms are really helpfull for Health Shrines for instance while a combo between the Shades and the Scythe is clearly intended since the indicators for both overlap nicely and everything.

Never rush the level. I often get to the max difficulty on my 3rd or 4th map and still manage fine because I have items.
Never stay in one location to fight against monsters, always stay mobile and circle around the map if needed.
During the normal level, you don't need to kill anyone unless you need the cash to open a chest.
During the teleporter activation, you also don't have to kill anyone until the timer is up, so you'll just run and shoot to get an headstart but you'll only focus on killing them once the timer is over.
And ALWAYS keep your distance from them unless your melee.

I think how long you take per level isn't even really a problem. What's important is to not WASTE time. As long as you keep leveling up and/ or getting new items, you'll be fine.

Those animations are godawful. The character looks like he's just sliding around at terribly slow pace. This is like Morrowind tier movement. There's the dodgeroll which looks like it has the potential to really fuck up your camera if you're not careful.
The weapons in the trailer look boring. Its literally just spam. I don't see any skill in the gunplay. Of all the games that needed to be 3D, Risk of Rain was not one of them.
