Hell the bandits/rebels guys are already in contact and trade with local aliens, so they did my entire job description with shuttles.

So guess what the pathfinder job is?

To fix the ruins of the ancient alien civilization, that no one had any idea it was there to make the new colonies better.

My main issue is with the lore and how they ignored the ME canon or simply rewrote it to fit their [current year] motives. The biggest mistake in terms of game design was SAM the AI companion, it shouldn't have been there, it contradicts the canon (they leave the MW galaxy during ME2 where everybody is aware of "the AI problem"). Worse, at one point of the game the AI take over Ryder's body functions (it stops Ryder's heart, he/she is dead for one minute) later on, there's a discussion on board the Tempest where the Asari doc is pissed that the AI nearly killed the Pathfinder, well here's the thing: at no point you get to side with her, every answer is "the AI did nothing wrong. vid related

Every species from the previous games left for another galaxy in case they don't make it against the Reapers in the current one. A whole new galaxy of which they know next to nothing about, so they need to explore and settle there.

The game begins with a character creator where you pick your race and thus your faction as well.

You are the Pathfinder, an intrepid captain, talented across several areas, tailored to explore the unknown universe and come back to talk about it.

Your job is to visit every planet you see, determine what resources it has and how suitable it is for your life. Then, you decide if the planet is good enough for a colony.

You never actually build or manage colonies, you merely point out the suitable planets for one.

Finding great places means bigger colonies, finding planets with rare resources means a better economy for your race.

As you discover planets and mark them for colonization, every other race is doing the same in other parts of the galaxy, staking their claim in this new land.

Every dead planet you greedily mark for development means everyone else took a decent one instead, thus you have to carefull pick what to colonize since you are competing with them as well.

Couple this with the few alien races that already inhabit this galaxy and are just starting to explore it, now competing against interlopers from another galaxy.

Eventually the galaxy is mostly fully settled in and now the game will trigger a crysis. It's details are fundamentally not important at all, it could be the reason why the previous alien races never expanded much, it could be an exploding star, a ravenous horde that feasts on the world.

The important is that everything that exists will start to become more and more rare, free land to live on the resource that will be hit the most.

Conflict will happen between everyone as they just try to subvert and the Pathfinder of each race, now a major political player, has to travel across the galaxy to assist his race as they struggle for their survival until they can find a way to reverse the cataclysm or stand victorious when almost everyone else fell.

What exactly does this mean?

It's basically Third Person 4X. You get a planet with a few variables like Size, Food, Metal and some rare resources on it like Durandium and what not.

When you mark a planet for a colony, it's map will change from a desert\jungle\forest tileset to have an actual settlement. It's size and the commodities depend entirely on it's variables and it can even grow with time depending on neighbors.

The weapons you find for sale to include in your crew\ship (and the ones you'll see your faction using) depend on those rare resources you find and their costs can go down the more advanced your race goes.

Every time you explore a planet, every other faction explores a random one as well and they might decide to expand to it as well, especially if they have less planets than your faction does. This means that picking every planet you see might not be the best idea.

That's a very basic economic side to give the world a sense of progression tied with your gameplay, instead of simply a linear progression tied to the narrative.

Then you get politics, diplomacy and trading, starting slow at first but becoming the main point in the late game.

Local leaders have policies regarding how a town develops. One mayor might favor industry instead of food, cheaper weapons for you but the settlement grows smaller. You can do a few side quests to help another mayor if you want to change this.

Want a weapon that you don't have the resource for? That's cool, go on diplomatic missions for another race until they sign a trade deal, giving you access to their resources (but giving money to that faction per purchase you make)

This can expand even more when you're all fighting for land.

You barelly have to write any story at all to make this interesting, the gameplay alone would carry it. You can include various types of cataclysms in the end to keep the player on it's toes and you can make sequels easily by either having the Reapers coming after this place next or the surviving race going back to the previous system and seeing what's left.

And if you do want to write a story, you have the different races basically capable of acting like the new Reapers, killing the local population, which would make for a decent narrative, you can go for "let's forget old grudges vs never forget the past", you can go by a billion different topics that always show up in times of desperation like this.

It's a game that basically writes itself this easily, plops sequels on your lap as well and there's no excuse this wasn't what they made.

Also, make fucking sure you're dealing with events and situations appropriate for your level, no more solving the daddy issues of your crew, no more being everyone's errand boy. Also, that you can actually deploy marines to go along with your party members so it doesn't play as retarded as other ME games.
