The Kirby series has a really odd bit in the beginning and a side trilogy.
The first game in the series is Kirby's Dreamland. The next game is Kirby's Adventure on the NES.
Now, there's a trilogy of games called the Dark Matter trilogy which are different from standard Kirby, have a connected story, and recurring themes. The first game in this trilogy is Kirby's Dream Land 2, named so since it's the second Kirby not-spinoff on the Game Boy. The next game is Kirby's Dream Land 3 on the SNES. And the final is Kirby 64: The Crystal Shards on the 64.

The X is meant to represent "cross", as in crossover. Other japanese games have also used an X to represent crossover, such as Namco x Capcom or Project x Zone.
Since SSB is a crossover on its own and is now crossing further over with 3rd party shit, Sonic & Snake, X works as a subtitle, and continued to get used even in promotion for Smash 4. (Smash Bros x Final Fantasy in the Cloud trailer is the only thing I can remember at the moment, but theres probably others.
