It as a fun simple game with decent world building and a casual laid-back story with some neat moments to it.
It was also from the time where Devs experimented with "what if you don't win the game by beating the crap out of everyone?" which is why despite there being combat, the story is about a journalist uncovering a conspiracy.
It wasn't a platformer like Ratcher or Jax or Crash, it was just an adventure game about a reporter doing the right thing with the help of her friends. It didn't had to be anything more than that, it was already a fun light-hearted game as it was and I was happy that some people still made games like that.
It's sad that they are going the "mature games for mature audiences" when Fuse or whatever that game was called is an academic example as to why you don't listen to the opinion of 12's since now they lost the essence of the first game and it doesn't seem like they included anything good enough to replace it besides really pretty graphics which will keep the game being talked about for roughly 4 days before it's forgotten.
Also, I really have no fucking idea why would they make the main character like that. It's one thing to make her black, you can argue that it's not that bad or that some people like black people, that much I get.
But a nose piercing and heavy scars on her face? Why not make her fat while we're at it? I mean, from certain angles the nose is already identical to the monkey and so is the hair, might as well go full racist and have the same belly as well.

I wouldn't say they were the entire reason. More of a contributing factor that didn't exactly help things. The problems you're describing were more problems in large cities. Most of the middle class white populations had already left most of the major cities by the late 70s early 80s ie when arcades where at their peak. One good thing now about the whole scene kinda falling out of the public eye. Is that the people who maintain the hobby now are like 90 to 95 percent white.
