True for some games, although west can have decent dubs too. But it just sometimes feels more fun to see a western game with a jap dub. Even something as wooden and awful as Skyrim can feel at least a tad bit better when you have actually competent voice actors talking.

The worst part is, there are god-tier Western actors. It's just that they almost never hire them for vidya voice acting. I'm not sure if it's because they are too expensive, or the devs just don't care

Took me a while to find a video without commentary, but here is Nightfire in Nipponese. Other videos show the Yakuza and screaming OLs in the Tokyo levels were redubbed. It's kinda weird, flat and uninspired. I prefer the original VA here.

Skyrim's dub has it's problems. For some reason they insisted on keeping the original pronunciation for proper nouns instead of approximating it, so the actors have to stop mid sentence and change tone completely to do so (this is fixed in Dawnguard and Dragonborn). The translation also has some issues like "Skeever Hole" is translated literally instead of recognizing it's a variant of the phrase "rat hole". Still better than the original by far.

The text color looks like it's because they needed to use a standard font. It's a pain in the ass to make a custom font for a game in Nipponese when you can't blame resolution limitations for rendering 99% of the words in kana, so most of their games now just use a system font.

As an aside, I'm surprised more Metal Gear fans don't focus on the translations. It's basically the most westaboo game from Japan, but a great deal of fans don't even know that Raiden sounds almost exactly the same as Snake in the original, and his whinier voice is solely in the dub. I just thought the community would be more attentive to language and dialogue alterations in a game series infamous for being scrutinized with a fine comb, or there'd be more "purists", in a sense.

Raiden's voice is forced to sound like Snake's until he takes of the mask in the English dub. It is not perfect, but it caught me off guard back in 2001 because I thought what seemed off about the voice was the respirator/mask. Raiden's voice for the rest of the game is kind of irrelevant and his whiny voice actually works well with the intent behind the character. Besides, MGS is so westaboo that the English dub is the "main" one, the lip sync is around the English dub et al.

V is pretty obvious because all the acting, including lip sync, is motion capture from the English actors (Sutherland, Joosten, etc). MGS4 I'm not 100% sure, but I strongly remember some weird lip syncing when playing in Japanese.

The Titanfall series. In the first game, you could equip your titan with a Japanese voice, but in the second you have to download the Japanese localization files and patch your copy with them.

In general most voiceover studios in the west use a group of local people. As paying for transport and hotel stays is expensive and they don't get that much money overall.

Some have partnership deals with other studios where they'll essentially do work for each other at a reduced cost or on the understanding it'll be reciprocated, whenever they need to avoid everyone having the same sort of accent.

Lot of them will be small time theatre performers who do it as a side gig.

Skullface hated English due to its status as lingua franca, and it being America's language, the country he hated the most. It's not so much the qualities or flaws of English itself as it is the place it holds in global society. If America spoke French and thus was the dominant language, Skullface would hate French instead. What he wants is to play the role of God during the Tower of Babel myth. While it's a rather Americentric opinion, the US speaking English is probably why English gets most of the hate it gets in real life. More times than not it's just lack of effort, Vid related for example was suppose to be the killer app for a system, so they hired mostly popular TV actors to do VA work, whereas a company like SCEA or Capcom japan didn't give a single fuck, and would just hire anyone off the street who could speak english.

They're not good at it, but Sony's Funimation forces it's VAs to sing constantly, though these days they've started to also make the jap bands redo the song in english in addition to recording the songs themselves.

Anyways to keep the thread on track, Dragon Quest 8. I'm gonna say it technically counts, since the Japanese version didn't have any dub until the 3DS release, while the US version added one in for the PS2 release.

And just for reference, here's DB Super 4th ending, dubbed by Sony(https://www.hooktube.com/watch?v=3uCDA6nnkP8). They're stupidly inconsistent with the songs though. DB Super on AS for example used the original japanese songs for a few episodes, then switched over to eng versions weeks later, and while the opening uses something the original band made, they didn't for this, despite the band making their own eng dub of the song(https://www.hooktube.com/watch?v=YuTxT90hZKA)

No they don't. Or rather, it depends. Great/legendary VAs get paid a lot, but they will still be paid less than most of the senior members of a given dev team.
