Never understood the appeal of these games. From an outside perspective, it's another case of people enjoying the narrative/characters more than the actual gameplay, like Uncharted or The Last of Us, or other modern Sony Games.
I have tired playing various MSG games, but I usually get bored within an hour or so, the gameplay is very clunky, which people seem to overlook due to their enjoyment of the narrative, which I don't much care for.

I was never able to play MGS4 because of it being a PS3 exclusive, but honestly, I don't think I really want to play it anyway. The games really took a nosedive in quality after MGS. MGS3 was a return to form, since it managed to combine the best aspects of MG and MGS, but if it wasn't for that game, I'd have to say that it would've been better if MGS had never gotten a sequel at all. The series has just been one disappointment after another.

Hi Capcom. Raiden's not even my main gripe with MGS2, anyway. The first-person aiming is incredibly clunky and unfun, and the whole tranquilliser gun bullshit feels tacked on and essentially punishes you for playing the game normally. Both the setting and the plot in general borrow far too heavily from MGS to be anything but boring. I get that it's intentional, but that kind of thing would probably work better in a film than in a game. In fact, the whole patriots thing in general really grates. It feels like every single MGS game after the first wants to either take a shit on MGS, or just pretend it doesn't exist.

He's extremely edgy in every game to the degree that he's written like a shitty action hero/wanna-be badass who spouts oneliners and coins his own catchphrases in situations where things are almost too dramatic to allow it. The contrast between how he looks like he fits in with the background and the words coming out of his mouth being throw-away tier was the whole of dante's character
Donte fits the bill to this, however there are many other problems that make it feel like they were just guessing and throwing shit at a wall to see what sticks; besides the gameplay, just talking about the writing

To be honest, I haven't played enough of the Devil May Cry series to have anything more than a rough outline of Dante's character, but I agree that edge doesn't necessarily have to be bad. It's Donte's inability to be anything less than 100% edge all day every day that makes him a shit character. That pre-bossfight cutscene in DMC4 that you mentioned is probably my favourite Dante moment, and it's precisely because he knows how to dial back the seriousness and enjoy himself.

Over-complicated plots, enough exposition to fill a trilogy of novels, and poor consistency? Why do people treat MG like this sacred holy grail of IPs? Even the franchise barely took itself seriously, as much goofy shit there was in every game. When it did, it was usually the worst parts of the series, like trying to explain all the weird shit with nano-machines/parasites. Why is it now a sacred cow that no one can besmirch by doing anything different with it? I get hating microtransactions and everything similar, but I've seen people complain that you can call in Ray, like having that ability is somehow shitting on the franchise.

I liked MGSV. I just want the rest of the fucking game and I'll never get it. I can play games all day, but they're more fun with context behind the actions, and I've gotten bored of playing mgsv knowing there will never be anything else that happens.
mgs3 was still the best, but mgsv could have been the best ever.

4 is a more streamlined and easier to control MGS3 with less survival mechanics. However it's way easier to play lethally and you can totally play it like a third person shooter. It's pretty infamous for it's cutscene and how much it took itself far too seriously. It's pretty fucking weak.
Peace Walker is pretty alright but clearly doesn't have the polish or gameplay variety of any of the previous MGS games. It's also made for the PSP so expect your missions to run anywhere from 2-10 minutes. It's got a really fun base building mechanic if you're into that but if not you're probably not going to enjoy it. It's also the MGS that took itself the least bit seriously with a Monster Hunter tie in if you're into that. It also takes fucking forever to 100% and a fuck ton of grinding but that was to tie into the multiplayer/coop.
GZ is really short but a damn good demo for V. There's nothing much to be said other than it gives you a good idea what they were going with in V.
V is essentially Peace Walker 2.0 but clearly unfinished and with only the first 15 missions being remotely the same quality as Peace Walker's. All the other ones are either padding or completely fucking boring. It's got a pretty good systematic design but it's clearly half-baked and the teams clearly didn't interact all that much with each other to incorporate how the systems actually interacted with each other.
Survive is clearly not going to be anywhere near good as the other games and the demo beta is not going to do it any justice since it's a
FUCKING WAVE DEFENCE WITH TOWER DEFENSE
but it looks like it's incorporated MGS3 survival mechanics and it's basically a reskinned V. If you liked V you're probably going to like Survive depending on how they take it. It's probably going to be shit.

I know it's wrong but i'm actually kinda excited to try the mgs single player campaign. I haven't decided to buy it yet, it's very dependent on gameplay trailers and whether it has denuvo or not, but i'm actually curious where the dudes who helped make mgs3 are going with this. It's also dependent on how many co op modes there are. I hope there are more than two, and there's an actual fairly long single player campaign.
