I don't know what went wrong from gamecube to Wii. It seemed like nearly every game on Gamecube was golden, they could just do no wrong. Then Wii hits, and the only game that drew me was the super smash series. I didn't even use the wii controller like you're supposed to, I played it like a super nintendo controller.

Yes, the only failure was the Virtual Boy. Since the Wii U still has stock exchanges and meet if I recall correctly, it is considered a "Failure" if comparing them to the bigger sales, but technically, in company terms, it is not, even if selling worse than the gamecube.

I think the main problem is the significant use of two screens at once. Most of the games that have been ported over to Switch used the second screen for minor functionality, if any at all. Both W101 and Star Fox Zero have gameplay going on both screens at once, SFZ more so. It's why Guard will probably never get a Switch release, because its designed around two screens.

The N64 was pretty bad, too. Nobody wanted to make games for it due to having carts (though I prefer carts to CDs, devs at the time had fallen for the FMV meme).

But it wasn't a failure. It didn't do as well as Nintendo would have liked, but it wasn't a failure. The N64's shelf life was 1996 - 2002/2003 depending on the region and sold almost 33m units. By contrast, the Virtual Boy only lasted from 1995 - 1996 selling just 770k units. (Which is actually much more than I thought. I could have sworn it only sold around 100-300k.)

They tried to always innovate, instead of maintaining whatever good ideas that were well received by Gamers. Even their established franchises got new versions that were too different from what most fans knew. Sometimes the changes were well received (Ocarina of Time), but most of the time, they became cult (as in small number of consumers) classics, or simply ignored.

When everything is new and nothing is familiar, most people will simply abandon it.

It was a failure in contrast to the PSX, which sold more than 3x as many units, and their previous two systems. If Nintendo had played their cards right for the 5th gen, they wouldn't have scared away several companies to Sony and SEGA.
