1) Faggot devs and journalists who can't help but politicize videogames. They want to turn vidya into an "artform" because that way they can more easily transmit the messages they want. When I first started R.O.B. threads back in 2012, it was partially meant to combat cynical attitudes towards gaming in general. This was the year when Ninja Theory was pushing their version of Devil May Cry that everyone hated, and when Capcom hid nearly a dozen hidden characters behind a $40 paywall on the disc of Street Fighter X Tekken. It's not that I've supported such actions in the past, or tried to downplay them, but the cynicism associated with it had a way of seeping into everything.
We have the same problem right now here on 8/v/. We can have threads for days about how this game company is screwing you out of money through microtransactions or how that game company is pushing some political agenda for having a gay character.
You say one nice thing about any modern game that comes out and you're a shill, you're a cuck, you are a corporate cocksucker who cannot think for himself. You're incapable of giving criticism. You automatically lack subjectivity. Worse yet, you're perpetuating all the negative things that is killing this industry for saying something nice about any company and are worthy of death. It is far more acceptable to be hostile towards a game series or a company rather than being supportive of it.
R.O.B. threads were meant to remind people that there still is a sense of whimsy and excitement when you play video games, even in this day and age. Admittedly, there were dumb moments during the threads that were overtly outrageous for the sake of humor or a cheap laugh, but the core message was to love video games and to not let anything get in the way of that.
F.C.R. may tell you that playing a certain game made you into a loser, but R.O.B. wouldn't let that spoil his fun. Game Boy may have beaten R.O.B. repeatedly despite his best efforts, but R.O.B. wouldn't let that spoil his fun. R.O.B. would even get frustrated that he couldn't figure a part out, but he'd never say that a game was bad because of his own frustrations. R.O.B. never played a bad video game, and that's because always saw a sense of value in the fun he had.
Mark said he's disappointed to see me pull the plug on the threads. He talks about a struggle against goons or SJWs or whatever. To be frank, I really never was passionate about fighting against these things in the first place, and R.O.B. threads weren't a vehicle for GamerGate or any other movement or idea other than loving video games. I hate a lot of things that the industry does, but I don't let it sour my enjoyment of what makes me happy. I'd rather play a video game that I was looking forward to, and learning to become better at it, than to spend any amount of time bitching about a company making decisions I do not agree with on a video game I have no intention of playing.
I honestly believe that, since 2014, we've been overruned by cynicism. Our focus shouldn't be on some internet boogeymen trying to troll us. It shouldn't be on Ubisoft selling a game with a DLC season pass sold separately. It should be about playing games and enjoying what makes us happy.
If there was one message I tried to get across more than anything else with my internet puppet show, it was to enjoy what made you happy. All I see now is people more focused on what makes them miserable. That's our big problem. Not goons, not SJWs, not people with proxies. It's our cynicism. If we could learn to focus on the good and ignore the bad and enjoy video games, we'd be a better community, I feel.
