The Mario Universe has superficial continuity at best. Miyamoto himself said he envisions the Mario Series as basically a bunch of plays being acted out by actors. I think there's two elements to how gay something is.

See, there's the factual side, of just strict measurements (sex of both parties) and that's undeniable.

Really quick, before I forget this thread's original topic, the ending is two things.

One, they had to have some reason for it to not result in Mario and Peach getting married, because that'd change up the status quo, and general tone of every subsequent game.

And two, just because it happened that way, doesn't necessarily invalidate the characters feelings.

Looking at it from both a meta "this is what the writer did, and this is what it means" and "this is how the characters feel," it's obvious that one, Mario does indeed have romantic feelings for Peach, and two, she would have accepted his proposal if Bowser hadn't interrupted.

Bowser interrupting and Peach storming off in a huff seems like "blueballing" the audience to most, and I can't really deny it'd have been nice to see something happen. You wouldn't even have to have them getting married, Mario was walking towards her with determination, so you could've easily ended it with him kissing her for a change, but again that'd interfere with the status quo.

But her storming off wasn't her "rejecting" either of them, it was

Which is far from unreasonable. And it's further shown she was just frustrated they couldn't chill out for five minutes, by her calming down immediately and yelling for them to come on home with her.

Anyway, the wedding aesthetic was always nothing more than an aesthetic and story dressing. The stakes are different this time, instead of Bowser implying he'd make Peach his wife, or keep her at his side because he needs her magic, or some shit, the cost of failure for Mario is having his bitch stolen. And it works really well, since this time Mario has personal motivation to chase after Bowser, beyond just saving the and Peach, he wants to avoid losing peach in a way unique to previous kidnappings.

The ending of Mario Odyssey reminds me of scene from Maison Ikkoku where after the rival suitors both break their legs or something, they hang out together and start drinking. During their drunkenness, they both start to complain about the woman they are trying to court, how she so indecisive and what not. It was nice moment of brotherly love while they both physically supported each other due the injuries while shittalking and agreeing about the woman they are chasing.

He also said he doesn't even design the first level/tutorial level until AFTER the rest of the game is completed. So in Wind Waker Outset Island was probably the last thing they made.
