Long ago, in the early 00's, some guy made a Russian translation for AD&D2. The translation kinda sucks, but it's generally alright. The problem is, it's just a huge block of text. Not very readable.

So, I try to put it into the same layout as the original English Revised Player's Handbook. Even found the HD versions of original artwork, cleaned the backgrounds, all that. But then I tried assembling it all together. In Word 2003. Got like 7 pages in, and realized this is going nowhere. The whole system is heavily wonky, and one change in a line miss-aligns all the text down the line, and there's still 290 pages to go. Word is not really the right software for what I'm trying to do.

So, /tg/, help me find software for making books, that allows adding a lot of pictures, while also working with the text. Preferably free, but I'll pirate if I have to.

If you want something close to Word, I recommend using LibreOffice. If you learn how to use Styles correctly, you can replicate something relatively simple like the original AD&D 2E layout pretty accurately. For the right fonts and everything, ask around the share thread - there was a homebrew trove with a lot of fonts and stuff, if I remember right.

For something free for higher-level publishing, you can use Scribus. I hate using it since I like to keep working on documents as I go, which publishing software is annoying for; but, since your text is already done, it might work better. Adobe inDesign and Affinity Publishing are too professional versions of similar software that are easier to use and a little more functional, if you want to pay/pirate.

There's also LaTeX, which I think is actually your best choice. But have fun if you want to go with that.

Newb questions for a mix of 3.5 and Pathfinder, Not sure I've read all the relevant rules / interpreted them correctly

1.

Magic Stone cleric spell (http://www.d20srd.org/srd/spells/magicStone.htm). Does the user have to fling each one separately, or can he just chuck all 3 as one handful at enemy?

If these are used with a sling, do the sling's strength and any magic bonuses stack?

If a 14 strength PC launched them from a sling, that would be 1d6+3? if it was a Magic Sling +1, 1d6+4?

Pathfinder spell - Ice Armor. It's described as having 0 hardness, meaning that any strike that lands on it should be chipping away at its HP. My understanding of the rules is that the only way armor is considered to actually get hit in combat is if someone uses Sunder and specifically aims at it - low level mooks are unlikely to have the feat that would let them do that without provoking AoO?

Reasonable to suspect that a roleplaying DM wouldn't have CR1 or lower trash mobs guess that they can easily disable PC's magic Ice armor and decide to intentionally sunder it?

Tactics with Long Spear normal sized opponents:

(a) given space PC can keep making use of 5 foot step to put distance between himself and a target that closed in, getting to attack each turn

(b) PC likely won't get AoO vs. an opponent that starts their turn 10 feet away (2nd square away from PC) because said opponent will also likely use 5-foot-step to close the distance.

(c) any enemy that starts their turn more then 2 squares away, can't approach and attack PC without proving an AoO once they try to move from 10foot distance to 5 foot distance

(d) Given open-field battle of 1 PC against 2 melee enemies with same speed, it should be possible to even out ratio of PC attacks vs. enemy attacks by using Full Withdraw.

Sequence envisioned, given that all 3 start standing next to each other:

Turn 1 PC uses FW to move max distance away from both - though really he only needs to be 6 squares away from both to prevent them being able to close in and attack in 1 turn.

Turn 1 Enemies - chasing both move actions just keep provoking AoOs without them actually getting to attack. If they don't have range weapons, they are best served by moving to distance of 4sq away from him so that their next turn they can close distance and attack.

Turn 2: PC moves to either side of the pair positioning so that closest of them is 2 squares away, furthest is 3 squares. Closest of them gets attacked on PC's round.

Turn 2: enemies, closest one can 5-foot-step and get to attack PC. Further one has to move at least 2 squares to close into melee range so he provokes. He can however try to use the full range of his one movement action to get around PC - but no matter where he positions himself, PC still has a way to move out without provoking using FW.

Turn 3 - sequence restarts.

(normally though battle would start with them being at a greater distance from each other, which would be equivalent to starting the sequence at Turn 2 point)

In a 2 vs 1 fight this should let PC trade an even number of attacks with 2 enemies, essentially getting First Strike vs. each opponent. If there are 3+ enemies, PC gets surrounded and completely fucked if he tries this.

Have I misunderstood any rules as to how combat works that would screw up the above tactic?

I am not entirely familiar with 3.5e, but this spell seems to imply you would fling one stone at a time. Strength bonus and magic bonuses do stack, though afaik the magic bonus on the bullet and sling would not.

A PC with 14 strength would do 1d6+3 dmg, but the sling would have to be +2 to get 1d6+4 dmg

Armor is generally only damaged by the sunder maneuver, yes. Thing about combat maneuvers is that they provoke an attack of opportunity unless the person doing the CMB has Improved X, Improved Sunder in this case, which you prob won't be running into at level 1.

Additionally, you can argue that by RAW the mook in question would need to make a spellcraft check to recognize the spell as Ice Armor to begin with, so they wouldn't necessarily know the armor can be easily broken.

3.

Your way of going about the combat with the longspear is correct, however it is also possible to make an acrobatics check as a move action to move half speed without provoking attacks of opportunity. This way you can attack or cast spells and still move, but the enemy would also be able to move in, tank the AoO, and hit you, so be advised.

Try Unknown Armies. It's a 2D10 roll under system where the crux is that Magic exists but there are no otherworldly creatures, it can all be tied back to human obsessions and Jungian Archetypes so the mages are high strung freaks who get their mojo from heavy drinking, reenacting old porn tapes, cutting themselves and so on.

It's entirely possible to play it as a CoC style investigator with no one being mages, that would be a 'street' level campaign where the players are not yet tuned into the Occult Underground. It was made with the early 2000s in mind, so that should also satisfy your modernish bent.

I don't know too much about third edition but apparently they really fucked up the formatting and spread all the rules needed for gameplay over three or so books, so in my advice just stick with 2nd Edition which has everything needed for play in one core book.

It is a fun little system, combat and damage can be very lethal very fast, there are 5 madness tracks with both hardened and failed meters to gauge how characters have responded to what they have experienced, Violence and Supernatural are obvious but there are also meters for more abstract concepts like Isolation and Self. All characters have three 'passions, their Rage, Noble, and Fear stimulus that when a player roleplays them in an action they get to FlipFlop their roll (so 91 becomes 19).

I do apologize if it sounds like I'm a shill, but I just really like the system and more people playing and discussing it would be for the better I think. If you are so interested, someone in the PDF share thread recently posted the entire trove of Atlas Games works and you can find the necessary titles there.

No I have not, but looking into it there is also a focus on a bunch of fantastical stuff so I'm not entirely sure on what you mean by grounded in reality. So if you want something that doesn't have people flinging around magic and the enemies are a bit more 'mundane', have you considered any of the GUMSHOE systems?

They have more of a focus on investigative and role playing as opposed to combat so maybe that's what you're after.

While I haven't gotten a chance to play it myself, I would recommend The Esoterrorists or Fear Itself. They share a setting, with Esoterrorists focusing on an approach of Men in Black esque government agency stopping monsters and people planning to bring more in, and Fear Itself being some regular unfortunates getting dragged into the mix and trying to survive.

So what's a Paladin supposed to do once they run out of spell slots? Everywhere I go, people insist Paladins are bullshit and one of the strongest classes in the game, but considering they are half casters without access to cantrips, they will run out of spell slots pretty quickly at low levels. In addition, pretty much everything they have requires concentration (even stuff that shouldn't require concentration, like non-Divine smites), and everything that doesn't require concentration is extremely situational (like Command or the absolutely useless "broken by all" Compelled Duel, which also requires concentration), so spell slots are only good for Divine Smite. If you use the "four combats before long rest" guideline, Paladins basically have to save all their spell slots to nuke the boss of the day, which means they are basic attack mashers for all other combats. Sure, they have a high burst potential with Divine Smite, but so do a lot of other classes, even in AoE. The only good thing about Paladins is their auras, and even then, only some of their auras are decent. They are also not specially tankier than other classes, considering the way 5e handles AC and HP (in fact, rogues are tankier due to Uncanny Dodge, and only have 1 HP less per level and potentially the same AC with a feat; what the fuck?). Paladins are also the only class subject to a set of guidelines that can make them lose ALL of their powers. All in all, they look like shittier versions of clerics.

So, what the fuck is so good and broken about Paladins? All I see is the potential to burst some specific bosses to 0 HP in two turns, if you had done nothing the rest of the day, but so can every other spellcaster. Is there something I am missing about Paladins, other than the Oath of the Ancients level 7 aura? I can only imagine other groups may not be following the 4 combats a day guideline, or simply not following the rules, because otherwise, Paladins seem fairly standard without multiclassing.

I'm just organizing my thoughts. I wanted to do some writing to help me cope with this depressing boredom. It is a theoretical faction in a most likely not to be finished story. I plan on using "allegories".

Part of it was humoring a funny idea that I had about historical figures as "Heroic Spirits". I thought about it and wondered "Is there anyone important that was too much of a dick to be even given the 'cautionary tale' exception?". The Nazi were involved in the 3rd Holy Grail War so I didn't want to think about Hitler. Then there is Karl Marx. He can't be a Heroic Spirit because he is a net negative to the world and he can't be turned into an "Anti-Hero" because some people still idolize him. However using a similar exception as Angra Mainyu and Assassin, a wraith representing an exaggerated embodiment of the evils of Marxism became an Avenger class servant. Also, Pinochet is a Rider class because free helicopter rides.

Dungeons & Dragons is very much geared towards dungeon crawling, micromanagement, steady progression, gold as XP, etc. Which is fine, but it ignores other elements completely or tries to by making simple mechanics to get them over and done with quickly. For example, the reaction system, having all social interaction be decided by charisma checks. Although this is a problem with most OSR games.

When I run D&D type games, I usually run a very homebrewed Basic Fantasy RPG. I pull things from AD&D 2e, 1e, ACKS, and Dungeon Crawl Classics. But that's the beauty of OSR, the systems are all very compatible and require little adjustment to be applied to your game.

What's a good game for emulating the type of adventures you might see in a fairy tale or folk tale?

Something with an emphasis on characters, people, and their interactions with the unknown. I understand that you can theoretically use any fantasy system to achieve this by keeping characters at low levels and limiting the scope of the adventure, but I would like a level-less system that outright encourages this. This way everything's kept on a less grand scale and one can focus on the story instead of looking for the next big stack of XP.

The answer to this is: It depends.

Moorcock gets brought up more, but the stronger influence in early D&D is in some way closer to the Anderson proposal, and then heavily modified with Tolkienisms. The conflict of Law vs. Chaos, as proposed with Anderson, is different in different worlds. In the "magical" world with elves and shit, Law is represented by human civilization, while Chaos is represented by fae creatures. On the other hand, in the "mundane" world, there are no tangible, magical forces of Chaos - just people.

The meaning: In his journey to another realm, Holger Carlson battles the forces of Chaos by fighting off an actual army with a magic sword. In the "normal" world, he fights off a single ambush. Huge gap, but both pivotal in turning the tides. The Nazis are portrayed as Chaotic in Arneson - whereas almost everywhere else declares them to be Lawful Evil - because the aggressive expansion across Europe and destabilization of the world system is Chaotic. But they're not the only force of Chaos - just the strongest at the time. The slowly growing USSR is the next step. In more subtle forms, Chaos is spread everywhere in the world, slowly eating away and decaying society. In short, Lawful is 1950s Anglo-American neoliberalism (capitalism, democracy, civil rights, etc.) as well as its monarchist predecessors, while Chaotic is everything else.

Short Answer: B/X, RC, or a retro-clone.

Long Answer:

1E AD&D DMG is a must-have for any edition of D&D.

4E is a tactical skirmishing game. It is not D&D, and should not be used to play D&D with (not that you can't, but that there's no point). But it is a good skirmishing game.

3E is a character creation system released for use with Microsoft Excel. You can optionally use it to try and run D&D games, but for actually playing games, it's a strictly inferior option.

5E is a compilation of 3E and 4E rules and a few new adjustments, and informed a bit by older D&D, in an attempt to create a system for playing D&D. It has bits of character building (but is worse at it than 3E), tactical skirmishing (but is worth than it than 4E), and actual role-playing (but is worse at it than D&D). It is the current edition, and thus popular, but there is nothing 5E does that another system is not strictly better at.

2E is a cleaned up 1E, and 1E is OD&D with a bunch of useless rules Gygax never actually used, and some that he regretted even making, which was put together for the sole purpose of tournament standardization. These can be used to play D&D, but I recommend just reading the 1E DMG and using it with something else.

B/X or BECMI (Rules Cyclopedia) are ones you're going to see recommended a lot. B/X is probably the closest to "best" for people new to things. ACKS, a modern OSR system, is probably the best "fork" of B/X that you can run, as it incorporates tasteful bits of character customization (though a bit more than I prefer) as well as having good end-campaign content. This is all good introductory stuff to get to play the game. These are all good D&D editions to start with.

OD&D is D&D. It is also a bit of a mess. Delving Deeper is a decent retro-clone, but does some strange things. 7 Voyages is a very flavorful retro-clone that diverges a bit, but does so in a good way. You can run OD&D straight as-is, and this is very fun - but you need to be very good at making stuff up on the fly. It's generally better to not think of OD&D as a complete game, but rather as a template from which you'll diverge and create your own campaign. If you take this route, you'll want to also talk with other people, ask questions, and look up some of the OSR primers. This is the first and final form of playing D&D.

Bog iron, gator jerky/meat, old sarrukh/old one artefacts, domesticated hydra, (food source, dragon bait, possible army maker) various toxins and venoms, passage through their territories, guides for the lay of the land, darktentacles (a reviewed shop in the realms has one in a basket in a store). Shed lizard skins (spell components) bottled firefles. Also, possibly song and dance- if the local regions religion is reciprocated through vigilance of an active Coatual in the region. Shamanistic nick-knacks, wood carvings, minor magical items made with ease because tribal magics, and mud golems (which are a thing, but obscure) and of course, ecology dependant herbs for use in alchemy, and healing; bloodroot- which is basically ginger, but a narcotic for vampires if they ingest it, possibly having other properties.

And according to a quick google search for 'swamp exports'- animal skins & logging. As they're lizard man and have affinity with reptiles, they can easily make certain hide armours others cannot, and they may/may not have trade relations with Yuan-ti. But asides from that, here's some of the reddit posts which I snagged.

Peat, Pitch & coal, Rice and SUGAR, and natural gases, some magical- there's probably been a few of these in D&D for swamps/wetlands

Now, how much the lizardmen make use of is up for debate, as in terms of D&D, they went from big-brain wizard-lizards who could just pull crap outta the weave at whim, building awesome lava-running strongholds with unique golems, enslavement of dragonkind, statis pods, and a few other neat things, to swamp-dwellers under the thrall of a ruling force, like a black dragon.

As for active regional powers/monsters well, there may be blighters about, and hags, but as it's D&D, we've got giant amphibians, spawn of juiblex, contents from the demiplane of filth, leftover temples to aztec murder gods, the old ones, yuan-ti stronghold/nests, coatual temples, black dragons, a small druid circle, a necromancer, oozes, trolls, maybe a reclusive wizard in a sunken tower, clay, bog or swamp mummies, werealigators/crocodiles, bet your ass a few ghouls, stirges, probably a cancer mage bcause Mosquito-AIDS, Will'o wisps, snakes, leeches and possibly Kyuss spawn, troglodytes/mutated hilbilly people.

My idea was a Black Dragon and the kingdom that surrounds the swamp have begrudgingly made some kind of peace: The dragon realizes it's fucked as soon as it leave the cover the swampland yet the swamp is too much of a bog for the kingdom to invade or destroy. The dragon is officially deemed Count of the swamp and gets to sleep while its lizardmen serfs do the work and earn it a tidy bed of gold.

3.5 Monster manual IV or V has lizardman.black dragon hybrids? I think? I've forgotten. I will note that I recall one of the NWN1 modules, possibly darkness over dggerford having a lizrdman village patron to a black. I also have a variant rule for blackdragon swamp concealment from 3.5, I'll post it later.
