Elves should not commonly socialize with humans or do their jobs the same ways. If you're an elf adventurer, you are an outlier among outliers and I expect you to choose that race because you want to do elfy things, not just get a +2 to the stats and skills your class uses. By this logic, while I find "elf is a class" a bit primitive, I think modern D&D style "race and class are independent" makes elves feel like just another kind of human.

I guess that this is meant to contain the elf-discussion from the meta thread so let me repeat this statement:
One of the main problem of elves is that they are often badly written. And I actually like elves and related creatures.
They are almost ageless and they have centuries of wisdom. This easiely makes them seems like stuck-up assholes if done wrong. Even worse if they disagree with the storis MC.
Regarding roleplaying since they are pretty they are an obvious choice for the DM's GF and similar types of bad players.
Then there's also the racial disagreements they often have with dwarves. The later tend to be more popular with typical fa/tg/uys.
Also, have a dwarf reviewing and elf.

I think that American RPG/Japanese Manga subcultures have turned elves into these faggy bow wielding tree huggers or slutty waifubait. I hate that shit.
I prefer the Tolkien elves because they're the superhuman remnants of a declining/disappeared ancient civilization who are individually powerful or wise but aren't numerically enough to profoundly impact the setting, at least any more.
Their place is in a prehistory setting where the world has low pop/tech and isn't properly formed, there are still everyday interactions with (demi)gods and the human analogue just isn't there or isn't important yet.
The Elves are the ancestor people that the humans inherit the world or the struggle against the BBEG from.

I think the hate for elves stems for the fact that they fucking cheat setting-wise. They often have no infrastructure or industry, bar some very vague "they live in trees and nature supports them or whatever", yet get to have ridiculously advanced technology and metal working compared to everyone else. They are pacifist (unless threatened) and of lithe, even downright fragile build, yet are somehow expert at every kind of combat and possess incredible strength. They live in the wilds, often far from everything, yet they are always perfectly clean and well dressed. They just lie down and sleep among the leaves and shit, yet they don't suffer from any diseas, hypothermia, aggressive wildlife, or anything else that comes with that sort of behaviour. They simply do not make sense; they're self-contradictory, the only explanation for how this is possible often being handwaved with "magic" or "nature favours them". And worst of all, they act smug and superior about it all, despite essentially being a cheat race. This is why elves are so commonly hated.

Alright, here's my take.
Tolkien broke elves. Not in his works, but by everyone copying his works, without putting in nearly the same amount of effort in world building.
If you look at Ljósálfar (light elves) and how they have their own place in the nine worlds in Álfheimr (Elfland). It makes sense when they are removed from the affairs of mortals, literally.

Because otherwise you just get pretty, knife eared humans. Which isn't terrible, just boring.

This, if your PCs feel that they can trust the elves then you've fucked up somehow. They may not be particularly malevolent (particularly compared to the average group of murderhobos) but there should be something about them that the human mind can only interpret as "wrong, wrong, wrong. Nope the fuck out of here now m8!". Emphasising the ethereal, almost transcendent, creature having to be polite to the species it sees as 'numerous enough to be a threat' can give you some interesting NPCs too.

Elves, to me at least, have never succeeded as a race outside of Tolkien's books. He hit it right out of the park with how he made their appearances, social structure, culture and history, probably because he essentially built it from the ground up.

It is readily apparent with your posts above that anything involving the writer behind the character is just excuses to latch on to something, anything to justify calling pride and hubris of a character ironic. Unintentional irony is not something to attribute to the character that is just an observation of bad writing, the writer bit is strictly applying to the writers not the characters. There was a page in the JSDF manga that explained that elves don't have a habit of teaching how to play instruments because they prefer to be self-taught and development their own style. I also read somewhere that elves in TES series don't like write books because the "they last longer than the paper". I honestly can't respect that. I think that it is best to view elves to have extremely different fundamental values.

Trying to define the difference between elves and men I feel is like grasping at straws since there is a whole lot to consider and I the concept of elven folk was never a strict definition. I love Tolkein and I think fantasy elves could have been so much better if fantasy didn't brush over the nuance and substance of his world.
Elves in Tolkeindom are of the world. Not in a modern/Christian view to mean "materialistic and shallow" but are much like the ents. They were the hieght of the world of arda and the world shaped them. The creation, arda, made up their being. This is part of why their skill and craft was better than that of men and also why Tolkeins elves(and also dwarves) and not men were the ones who could craft magic and weild it(for the most part). As magic was not separated from the physical world but was just outside the ken of men who, unlike the elves, did not have the same sibbness to the world.
Men were sundry from arda. They were not one with the creation but outsiders. They changed to fit into the world and used what the world had but were more like foragers passing through the world, where as elves lived in it and navigated it like in ships made as if from the things they created for the purpose of navigating the nuances of arda that men did not yet or maybe just were completely unable to grasp.
Im not an expert in Tolkien but an enthusiast so I might be wrong... anyways I hope this may be of use to y'all world builders and to the thread.

Embrace it. Make them obnoxiously elite, creatures who can trace their lineage, who make a point to remind those they're talking of their long and boring history mostly built off of who they know or had known. Make them hilariously out of touch with those who've not had the fortune to be gifted with great magics. Make them able to recognize that their kind is failing, but too arrogant and blind to their own faults to understand the cause. Make them constantly stick their noses into other people's business with the absolute conviction that they must be completely right and everyone is just too stupid to understand them.

Today we are in another cycle of decline, only the declining civilization/empire, the American one, the "West" has come to be identified with the entire race of people from Europe, and so it's decline is associated with the decline of the race, unfortunately. That's not going to happen though.

I don't know who started it. As far as designs go, it's a way to get their "similar but not quite human" characteritic across and it's the only one that translates into every artstyle. Some manga art might be so light that everyone looks like an elfin being, some western art so rough that everyone looks like an human ogre but unusual ears are always an indication that this character is actually supposed to look non-human. And if other races have pointy ears in a setting then it's obvious that elven ears should be even more elegant, lavish and longer.

It's nothing fancy or original (it's basically stolen from other media) but this is what I thought up for the elve in my homebrew.
Elves live in close symbiosis with their land. The rulers of an elven kingdom bind themselves through magic to the land they settle in. This is a long process and it means they will be unable to ever leave this land but it allows them and their offsprings to manipulate it through their will. Elves don't really have tradesmen the was other races do, instead some of them specialize "growing" food, tools, houses and most other things they need. The main resource they need is time. A grown wooden elven blade is just as sharp and durable as one made of steel but it takes years to grow one. Even the animals in the area are controlled through this magic and they are eager to serve as defence or food for their masters.
This is also why elves often seem to be nature lovers. In truth they don't care if you chop down a tree, as long as you don't do it in their lands, where it usually leads to an execution if not all out war.
Their reliance on time and specific enviroments is also the elves' biggest weakness. There are few new elven settlements these days and fewer still are the ones that manage to bind themselves to the land.
Elves have thin, sharp facial features with large, searching eyes. Their ears are long, tapering to a point at the ends, and they often wear their hair long and unrestrained. There's little difference between most elven "subspecies". Their height (shorter than human but taller than dwarves), features and abilities are the same, the only difference is environment they were born in and their coloration:
Wood Elves: The most common elves, though still rare compared to the other races. They tend to live in deep forests. They have light skin, nad usually gold blond hair, though light shades green hair also exist. Their eyes are bright blue and green.
Sand Elves: These elves live in desert areas. Their kingdoms are often hidden away in secret oasis. They have dark brown skin, silver hair and golden- to reddish orange eyes.
Wild Elves: Wild elves dwell in the deepest parts of the southern jungles. They are more warlike, territorial and primitve than other elves. Their skin, hair and eyes are shades of brown. Their teeth are pointy and fang-like.
Shadow Elves: Also known as mist elves, as recluse kind that lives in the dark northern bog areas. Their haircolor varies from almost white to dark blue, with bluish skin. They have red, yellow or blear blue eyes.
