You know the drill, post games that pertain to the board's interests, the lore surrounding them, and ones that are fun to play together using online multiplayer.

Oh, and before you ask, your average Tacticool Shooter game can easily be reflavored to handle a Cuphead campaign. Personally, I'd go with Savage Worlds and limit dice explosions based on EXP gain, and use the Superhero supplement to add some cartoon logic into the mix, though I'm sure others have different suggestions.

Well since you've posted Dark Souls…

I'm not sure how you would reconcile the game mechanics into tabletop mechanics short of gutting the experience. You can put the tone and atmosphere into any game experience, but the mechanical way the game plays won't translate. Majority of it is about dodge-rolling and finding opportunities to attack without losing so much stamina that you can't roll out of the way of the next attack. This can be executed reliably in the hands of a practiced player.

It's unfortunate, because building your characters equipment and stats is one of the best parts of the game and allows a lot of freedom that could almost be translated into a tabletop game.

Dragon's Dogma, because the game is better than nearly all western open world RPGs even though it's a janky, unfinished mess that had to cut out tons of stuff in development so they could actually release it. Too bad it's single-player only, because proper multiplayer was one of the features cut from the game.

>class system and proper party buildan'

>proper inter-dependency and complimentary abilities between classes

>magic that is powerful, but badly needs support and defense from other classes to keep it effective

>great dungeon crawling

>tons of equipment so you can play FASHION'S Dogma

>most of the game was inspired by Berserk in a big way

>dragons that are actual fucking Dragons and not Wyverns who are actually fun and challenging to fight

>climban' on monsters and stabbing them in the face

What you want is a tactical rpg where it's more than just "I roll to hit and for damage." There's actually several options I've looked over to reconcile this:

Blade of the Iron Throne is a d12 dicepool combat rpg that's got a great cinematic combat system that works for a Sword and Sorcery style game. However, it's the sequel to The Riddle of Steel RPG, and thus sorcery is more of the Robert E. Howard Lovecraftian style. A new magic system would need to be developed for it to properly emulate Souls, but as-is, it's a great option.

There's also Mythras, AKA RuneQuest 6, or the descendant RPG of the Stormbringer RPGs. It's the tightest, most fluid version of the d100 system I've seen, and you can honestly do anything with it. Even the magic system is more of a template guide on how to create your own magic system. It's more developed than GURPS, and less crunchy, but still a very mechanical rpg. It takes some getting used to if you haven't played a Chaosium game before, but as-is, it's basically perfect for a Dark Souls RPG.

Do babby-mode dungeon crawlers count?

I'd get lambasted for saying this on /v/, but the main series would really benefit from moving to turn-based strategy more like the Mystery Dungeon games. The lack of terrain, size, and movement are a huge detriment to any kind of tactical gameplay.

Just make PTU into a fucking video game.

I'd say keep em separate, if both can exist all the better. Call me an autist but I like playing showdown and don't want the main series battle system to die.

I remember playing the one where a Gengar and his friends were the villains, but that was a long time ago. What's a good point for getting back into the series?

Diablo 2 is generally better and since the auction house got overhauled the chance for getting loot without grinding is pretty much nixed unless they brought it back or something I remember it being much easier too, apparently nobody could play a Barbarian correctly because despite being some 14-20 levels lower I died a magnitude less often then everyone else. But Blizzard's method of cheat detection is so anal it actually locks you out of the game if you so much as change which account you use on your winblows or Linux distro.

if you look at the market for comparable hardware to what's in the console, on average it's about twice the cost.

Not only that, Linux Firmware may even come natively. Rumor mill has it that the new Linux subsystem calls in Windows 10, as well as the Windows 10 update model are part of Microsoft slowly building away from its codebase entirely, replacing their current kernel piecemeal with a Unix system.

But it last longer and is more versatile. Not to mention that the upgrade cots are much lower than getting a console of the next generation.

Now, I'm not some kind of PC elitist. Never was. I even still use my PS2, Wii and original Xbox sometimes. However, I don't see any reason to get a current gen console. Except some very tempting exclusive titles. Looking at you, Bloodborne. You constantly need updates and patches on today's consoles but fan fixes and mods are way more restricted. Even if a company goes bankrupt, there's a good chance that you can still get support through fansites but if the network for one of those consoles closes down, they become about as useful as closed MMOgame.

Maybe this deserves it's own thread, but anyhow, I imagine there's plenty of fans of EYE Divine Cybermancy here. Apparently, the game was based off a tabletop game that was never really released and probably was only played by the devs as some fucked homebrew of deathwatch.

Do you think it'd be possible to recreate the tabletop game based on what limited knowledge we have of EYE? And would Deathwatch crunch be fitting for it or would you need to edit things a bit/use a more appropriate system?

If it were to happen, should we also expand on the amount of weaponry and/or psionic powers available? I think the available weaponry is pretty good, if maybe in need of one or two additions, but with only ~9 iirc psionic powers the pool is a bit sparse for people who want to play psionic-focused characters.

I'd personally use Mythras and M-Space, d100 systems descended from RuneQuest. M-Space is sparce, it's really more of a supplement for Mythras, but it has Psionics and tech, as well as Magic from Mythras, and a free Guns Supplement, that's /k/-worthy for how in-depth it lets you go to stat firearms from space age to black powder.

Of course, if Chaosium d100 RPGs turn you off, then it's not for you, and it does have a fair amount of crunch to it, so it's not for new players.

>tl;dr: games where I can disregard established plot to pretend my own?

Maybe it's because I grew up playing tabletops where players were the ones to drive stories forward, or just because I'm a staunch armchair-critic of film and video game story, but I keep finding myself losing interest in games because I don't care what's happening, and gameplay isn't enough to make me continue when I could play something else I'm interested in trying. Of course I enjoy the well known, revered classics like Planescape, Deux Ex, Arcanum, and System Shock, I have a fucking blast being able to use a game as a sandbox to make my own stories instead.

I love games like Dwarf Fortress, Rimworld, Mount and Blade, and even the Sims because I can always start a new save and have it play out totally differently, imagining and telling myself a story as it develops. Fuck, I even managed to have fun playing Skyrim by disregarding the main quest entirely, although I think I spent as much time modding and bugfixing as I did playing. Are there other games out there that let me do the same thing? The more varied the gameplay the better, but I'll take a simple sandbox over Mr Sheckleberg's latest sandhallway with chest-high walls and a dramatic twist any day.

DD was made to be an homage to western action RPGs anyways, but when you look at the history of the genre, most don't even measure up to DD's most basic combat systems. It's just a shame that the game wasn't wholly as deep and complex as the creators intended. Also, thank Capcom for stagnating the fucking IP and not making a proper sequel even after the PC version sold better than their most generous estimates.

Focus Home Interactive was involved in a few Soulslike games, with The Surge being their most recent. Their first few attempts were kind of rough, but The Surge was actually a pretty solid game that I enjoyed a lot. If Greedfall is at least a little better than I'll definitely pick it up.

Focus Home is the publisher of both Greedfall and The Surge, but Deck 13 made the Surge, and Greedfall is being made by Spiders. I have no idea if FHI's involvement will mean anything.

Either way, The Surge isn't too bad. The limb slicing mechanic is nice when it comes to farming the parts you need, but they don't do much with it, besides having one enemy type that revives after you kill it, which will fight different depending on how you killed it the first time. Story is kind of a mess that only vaguely makes sense, but it works well enough without doing any of that DEEPEST LORE'' kind of shit. Core gameplay is pretty solid and all of the weapon types feel distinct and viable in their own ways. It's even got a New Game+ that sprinkles in some challenging enemies with randomized gear, letting you build higher tier equipment earlier on.

So, anyone here play Fire Emblem.

I've been playing a nip hack of FE8 called Fire Emblem Midori/Green, where all your units are characters from FE 1-12 that have green hair. In the same vain as FE girls, It's pretty unique and challenging, if a little frustrating at times.

This game actually has units that can use both weapons and magic, and to get around certain issues with this, Magic and resistance are now the same stat. There's even a growth rate for movement, low for most characters, but a few characters are blessed with a high one.

The game's fun but can occasionally be obtuse, though there's no reinforcements moving on the turn they come in the map so you can account for most things. Of course, reinforcements can still fuck you over, there's enemy staff users with berserk and silence, and this game has no true hit, so taking a chance on a roll is very risky.

Overall, I'd highly recommend it. My personal favorite units are Nephenee, Brighton, Arden, Lyn, Ray, and Nino.

Took a look at some discussion, and it looks… intriguing to say the least. According to an interview with one of the devs, the 17th century continent has around 5-6 major factions, each with different creeds and abilities, 17th century Technomancy and Religious "Light" abilities were mentioned. A new Island has been discovered, and you, the main character, seem to be the brother of the mayor of a colony on this island, and you're charged with being the peacekeeper and negotiator.

Gameplay isn't necessarily combat focused, and the dev emphasized story and environment elements.

Overall, I'm cautiously optimistic, and I'm hoping they do allow for a variety of play-styles.

They released it on PC, seemingly just on a lark or maybe in an attempt to recoup a little more money from the game because PC ports aren't that expensive and there are entire studios who specialize in ports of console games now. Then it sold really, really fucking good. Better than they even estimated it would… and the last thing they said is that they might have some future plans for the series in the west and it's been radio silence ever since. People assumed it meant the MMO was getting ported, or maybe a sequel, but who knows? Could be they have their hands too full with MonHun World or they just aren't far along enough to announce it.

And the only serious demands you need for a top of the line PC is for emulators, or really really shitty optimized games. Taking the "plunge" prematurely into the new DirectX and getting Winblows10 is something only an idiot would do.

Not strictly /tg/ related in any overt way, but I'd like to recommend Kenshi. It's not about magic. It's not historical of medieval. It's a game about getting your ass kicked.. over and over and over.

You are a fucking nobody in Kenshi and the world is a harsh wilderness full of slavers, raiders, and other assholes. You've got no training and not much going for you at all. So your goal is to get your shit together, find a few other assholes with nothing better to do but to follow you around, or maybe scrape together enough money to hire them as your body guards, and slowly build yourself up until you can survive in the wild, build up your own town/fortress, maybe do some slaving of your own, and slowly become semi competent in hopes that you and your gaggle of assholes can survive and deal with the tons of other gaggles of assholes also running around the world.

It also gave you an Evee Starter, and a De-stone, which let you devolve Eveelutions while still keeping their moveset, so you could end with an Espeon that had Fire, Water, Electric, or Dark moves in addition to Psychic, and the Special Attack to compensate for lack of STAB.

If you really wanted to, you could say damned near everything and any setting is /tg/ related, because /tg/ includes sci-fi, fantasy, science fantasy, and any other damned setting or theme you want. Which makes one wonder what exactly does make vidya /tg/-related? I'd have to say it has something more to do with lore and worldbuilding, a sense of adventure, control over one's options, the ability to play a story in different ways, and make choices. Being able to customize your character and play lots of different builds helps too, but the big deciding factor in a vidya's /tg/ness seems to be based on whether or not it does these things well.

That aside, even without the action-oriented gameplay, the other aspects of MonHun are very heavy on bookkeeping or poorly developed. Needing to keep track of every piece you carve and then use to craft alone is just not fun, even if you automate it with apps and spreadsheets. The rest of the world is vague on purpose, meaning there's not a strong, established setting for players to interact with on a roleplay level. What makes MonHun is the hunting gameplay, not walking around Loc Lac city and haggling with an NPC merchant over the price of Nitroshrooms or negotiating the terms of a mission with a Guild representative or trying to hit on one of the guild girls at the tavern.

You could develop a setting from the themes and ideas of MonHun, like this thread was talking about >>344562 but you're going to be cutting out a lot of the material and little things that make the game what it is.

Why, /tg/, WHY? Deathwing had so much potential but it fell flat becasue the only one who gave a damn were the art directors. The only thing on-point about that game was the lore, but everything else was awful.

Your AI squad is pants-on-head-retarded, melee combat is dogshit, inter-squad banter is nonexistent, the weapon variety is is awful, the game drops below 30fps when there are greater than 0 nids on screen, multiplayer is (understandably) dead, why can't we have nice 40k games? The last one I actually remember liking was Space Marine, and even then it wasn't all that spectacular. No one would have minded if they just copied Vermintide and built upon that, it was a great Warhammer game. For a company supposedly with an iron fucking grip on their IP, Games Workshop sure likes to whore it out to shitty game studios.

If you've never played any of the Way of the Samurai games, 3 and 4 are on PC and they're both pretty good. They're effectively choose your own adventure games where you take the role of a nobody samurai and get thrust into some events in a small area over the course of a few days. Who you help, what you do, and who you kill all lead to one of usually a dozen or more endings. It can seem a little shallow at first, but it's meant for numerous playthroughs.. and each time you playthrough, all your money and items transfer over, so if you upgrade or build a really swanky sword, you can keep using it. Once you start looking into how to get the other endings, you'll start to appreciate how much shit it going on while you were fucking around picking fights with passing assholes.

It's certainly more straight forward. Don't remember much about WotS2, except that tournament arena part. WotS3 is nice because you can access your meta-game vault in the middle of a playthrough, and you can save up parts to build the most ridiculous broken weapons, but the story is kind of a mess and it's easy to stumble through it a few times and never really understand what's going on. Not to mention that there's a ton of shit that just never comes up unless you know to go looking for it. WotS4 has the best variety of weapons and wacky shit and the school system is a neat touch. Certainly the least obtuse of the 4.

I believe they do have the rights to some of the short stories that are canon for the Mythos, and have kept it vague about what they do have so they can attempt to pull out the lawyers anytime someone tries to create something that isn't pure Lovecraftian Public Domain.

I got it when it was 50% off and I think that was a fair price but then again I love games like that, where the main draw is the actual "gameplay". It kinda feels like a mix of Hotline Miami and Neo-Contra.

Going through the main story once took me about 3-4 hours and it could take you less, depending on your skill.

>>369425

It's not the worst but I don't think it's worth getting if already own the old games or if you could get them instead. They added some new classes, timesavers like "always roll highest on level-up" or "always succeed when transcribig spells" and characters. The two former neat but not worth getting the EE for, the later feel kinda out of place and I wouldn't recruit them anyways.

Their worst crime was changing the cutscenes to that "motion comic" shit.

The expansions they released are just complete shit. [Current year] aside, they also have bad gameplay, bad world design and bad storylines.

Been really enjoying Might & Magic 7. I'm a little over-leveled but having a blast. Only downside is the Greyface mod to fix a lot of issues didn't fix audio looping, so I just manually made each MP3 longer in audacity.

Tzeetch even provided a link to the game in the video description.

Gonna try and fuck over both Humans and Elves and claim Hammondale for myself. Easiest is if I time it right and get the "fake" completion for both. Harder if I complete both their missions. I'm playing good right now so I guess I don't want either side fucked over and should pick fake resolution?

Convenience is a moderately big deal. If I buy a game from GOG, I can just download it, along with all the patches, any time I want(at least, unless GOG goes bankrupt), hassle-free. No need to worry about finding a torrent with seeders or a working download that's not an archive for which you need to find a password. And as a bonus, if there's a linux version, I can just grab that instead of trying to run the game in Wine(which has a good chance of requiring some messing about). For me, that's worth a few dollars.

Been playing a lot of Cultist Simulator, which if it weren't for all the timers and randomization that could't be aped in a physical format, would be a top-teir board game in my book. Almost everything in the game is represented either with cards or with action boxes that cards go into, and a lot of the fun of the game is figuring out how everything works.

Pro-tip: For those just starting out, pick Lantern or Heart for your cult. Knock and Secret Histories are hard mode, as Knock is a FUCKING BITCH to find shit for, and Secret Histories cannot advance cultists to the highest rank.

Had a recent balance overhaul accompanied by the new (pretty good) DLC. Reworked how some buffs function and made some minor adjustments. Some nerfs here, some buffs there. Boosted crit rates, getting a crit hit now buffs the hero for a turn or two, buffs/debuffs now count off at the end of rounds instead of individual turns. Grave Robber's pickaxe pierces PROT, Jester's dirk stab ignores Guards, Abomination is allowed to party with the DEUS VULT types now. The main point of contention was a new system trying to combat stalling that is just stupid bullshit that won't even work. Hasn't troubled me, personally, but there was much bitching to be had.

>archery mechanic is retarded, arrows nose-dive into the ground at like 2 meters and after you get a few seconds to practice you have to spend 15-20 minutes hunting for rabbits in the woods without the ability to end the quest early or get more practice in first

>voice acting quality is inconsistent as fuck

>combat was janky as shit, every enemy knew how to perfectly dodge every attack even if you use the fake-out tactics that the game taught you to do

>sometimes an enemy blocking would catapult you into the air

>hit detection is messed up, sometimes your arrows will fly through enemies or bounce off the tree behind them

>mechanics poorly explained numerous times to the player, the sprint button is also the skip tutorial button so you accidentally skip tutorials

>historical realism elements were the worst part of the game, it tries to railroad the player without giving them the dialogue options do play the game in different ways despite the developers saying the game would let the players play their own way

>lockpick mechanic was unusable

The best part of the game was the first hour or so before the enemies showed up an attacked your village. Roleplaying as some random medieval peasant for that small amount of time was great. Everything after that was just pure dogshit. A developerm, in a very anti-consumer fashion, pushed out a game that wasn't fit for release and everyone loves them for it because they happened to be anti-censorship/pro-realism (which are things that I loved and admired about the game prior to its release).

I fucking hate that game so much. I hate the developers for pushing it out as it was. And I hate the fact that it's successful, because if anyone else released a game in that state it would've been reviled (and rightfully so).

You had a problem with the combat? All you have to do is just stab at them over and over again, even fist fights is just straight punches like you're in Fist of the North Star. The lockpick mechanic is poorly explained, you essentially have to move through a fixed path that you must adjust while turning the lock once you grasp this it's just a matter of practice.

On launch, after first patch, if they had any form of armour they would block 100% of attacks no matter the timing or direction, even if you did the fake-outs that the game taught you to do. They responded instantly. It was nightmarish.

Fist fighting was okay but I only did that once, and it was at the beginning which I know a lot of people disliked. Fighting the scavengers when you return home after fleeing wasn't and issue. But the second the enemy had any form of armour then they'd block every swing. Maybe it was different for other people, but that would just mean there was a bug that caused combat to be unwinnable. I had to always avoid fighting in order to progress in anyway because of it.

Raw stats are increased by doing, like Morrowind. The guy having trouble clearly isn't sparring with the trainer after the intro because not only raw stats but you'll eventually get a feeling for the window of time you actually get to execute your moves. Combos are worthless against anyone actually skilled at swordsmanship, from dev talk that's deliberate.

All bugs I've received combat related had nothing to do with timing or just plain fighting and always had to do with them flying towards me or going in and out of combat, I seriously suspect you just suck at playing games that require reflexes or for whatever reason you refused to give up on the sword and just use a mace because that's way more friendly to people who have a hard time with the swords.

I also suspect you're actually haven't bought the game at all and pirated it, because the physical copy of the game is just an installer.

I paid for a PS4 copy of the game the day it launched. Played it the next day due to the Day 1 Patch (roughly the same size as the game itself) taking forever to download.

You can believe what you want. If it's truly incomprehensible to you that an extremely buggy game was buggy and anyone who implies it was must be lying because you didn't have the same problem well then whatever. That's a you problem.

This isn't a bug because that has never been "fixed" in any patch, if anything the tutorial itself is atrocious you don't actually need to heed direction of attacks for block it's much easier then it looks it is only for parries, ripostes, and master strikes that direction of attack matters. But ripostes and master strikes hinges on your competence at parrying and ripostes is how you deal with the skilled opponents kicking your ass in the game. Ripostes and master strikes require you to hit q before the attack animation even starts and doing the parry, that is how small a window of time you have. Ripostes and parries (not master strikes) has a huge dependance on stats too.

If you can't do that stuff then just get a mace, full plate, wreck everyone's shit but don't be stupid and take two guys at once.

While D:OS2 is a pretty good game, i feel that it still falls short of the infinity engine games, or even pillars of eternity, when it comes to combat mechanics.

Sure, the elemental mess is fun in the first 20 minutes, but having the entire battlefiel get filled with poison and explode 3 times in a row is pretty silly. Also, the melee classes are sort of shit, since most of their action come from “not-spells”.

Pillars of eternity still suffer from this on a much smaller degree, but baldurs gate is still miles ahead of both of them. It is also the only one of the three that remotely feels like a TTRPG.

However, it is a very well written game, the quests give you plenty of options, it has a few sort-of-interesting character plots and the graphics are great. Lore-wise, i feel that PoE is a bit better, since it appeals to several real-life archetypes, but i’d say both are mediocre.

I'm genuinely surprised no-one's mentioned Dark Messiah of Might and Magic. It's one of the most rewarding single-player experiences I've ever had and a personal favourite from a gameplay perspective. It's more action-oriented than your average /tg/ vidya, but the breadth of magic/skill/environmental interactions combined with the superb level and encounter design lends it tonnes of replayability. There's some minor RPing to be done, too, depending on whether you want the player character to be evil, selfish, selfless, etc.

Personally, I've played through it (about 12-15 hours) four times, and I've found new secret areas or alternative encounter approaches every single playthrough, to the point what I thought was scenery was actually part of a puzzle. There are entire sub-themes of puzzles you can miss without the right skill or magic spell, and it feels wonderful because the game truly is full of secret nooks, rather than simply appearing to be like so many games. The rope bow is a simple but very effective gameplay mechanic for opening up the levels vertically, and adrenaline giving your spells additional effects is really fun.

Being a game released in 2006 on the Source engine, it has some minor lighting and collision bugs, but those shouldn't pose a problem in a game with quicksaving. No magnet link because it's easy to find, but I offer these webms.

The story is one of the better parts, mostly because it complements the gameplay and doesn't get in the way. The villain has justifiable motivations, and player's & player character's knowledge/motivations are likely to be the same, and the choices aren't any more complicated than an action game needs them to be.

It's a fucking Source game, why in the everloving fuck nobody made any custom singleplayer maps? I'm not even asking for a campaign, just give me an arena with infinitely spawning waves of enemies to fight. A basic fucking wave mode with increasing difficulty and rewards of new weapons/armor/skillpoints would've been amazing.

Probably one of the few games that will run ok on my potato. I briefly tried with a test server on localhost, and it seems fine except the client needs some cutomization, like bigger fonts and better keybindings. Yeah this looks promising! Anyway it's either that or go back to text roguelikes and such.

Yeah like I was saying, kind of rough on the edges at the start, but probably fixable. I guess the tiles are pretty small though, and that might be a problem for me unless I can change my screen resolution. Apparently there are other forks of this game with bigger tiles and maybe those can be used here too.

Man, it's been a while since I've seen that. Played it way back in the day (2002-2006) back when there was a Windows DirectX based client that was still compatible and was 10X more useable than the shitty gtk/java clients. The person that did the DX client eventually forked crossfire and made https://www.daimonin.org/

It looks better, but strangely isn't fun or interesting.

Some things to note about Crossfire:

-It's made up of code and maps cobbled together by drunk Norwegian and American college students.

-LOL what's balance? (see above)

-Bugs. Expect server crashes.

-Many maps have some very simple fake random "physics" that is used for certain hidden triggers. This means that sometimes things in a map won't work properly

-The overworld was originally much smaller, but they decided to create a fucking huge (and fucking empty) overworld map that basically requires you to already know where you are going to find things.

-Hopefully they finally added secure connections, but it's probably a good idea to assume your username and password are being transmitted in plaintext, which it was still doing around the time I stopped playing.

For all it's flaws, it's actually a fun game. It's a bit weird to say, but crossfire is a game. A real game. It isn't a faggy "experience" or a carefully designed psychological and financial exploitation method. Even the grind is "crunchy". Another thing that makes crossfire fun is exploiting shit. Consider the following:

>One map had a bunch of generators that would spawn a shit ton of giants for a long time, filling up the map. Wise players could run across the map, push a boulder into a three tile chokepoint in a fence on the other side, and thus safely heal and kill giants at their leisure. A player that stayed around the entrance would quickly become overwelmed and be forced to leave, possibly not being able to escape if they entered again due to a giant blocking the door.

Here's what the early 20x20 pixmaps looks like on systems that supported color.. This was before my time, sometime between 1998-2000.

The client had some non-intuitive keyboard functions, but once you used them they really made sense and also made things quick and easy.

And I can't mention crossfire without also mentioning wyvern, which is also a graphical mud that drew heavy inspiration from crossfire, but was very much a different and more advanced beast. This was one of the defining games of my childhood (along with BZFlag, Crossfire, the Age of Empires and C&C games).

Basically coded by one guy, Steve Yegge (Rhialto), the server and game has essentially been his white elephant. Steve is an interesting character. Reasonably people don't hate him, but he does have some flaws that really become obvious because he's literally the single point of failure for anything and everything. Consider the following:

>Steve creates a set of rules, many of which if broken requires banishment.

>The Wizards (which are the mapmakers + mods) do pretty much all the enforcement of the rules because Steve disappears for long periods of time.

>As time goes on, it becomes clear that much of the rules are a huge waste of everyone's time. The players hate it and the wizards hate it.

>Wizards repeatedly request changes to the rules, and clarification for all the shitty edge cases that players get into.

>Wizards are ignored.

>Wizards continue to enforce rules, because that's what they promised to do and it's Steve's game.

>Wizards basically keep the game running for a few years, despite a bunch of shit breaking, and a load of bugs and exploits that aren't being fixed.

>Game finally goes down for 10 years.

>Game comes back, not on PC, but as an iOS app and later android, as Steve want's to try to have another go and make the game sustainable (the game has cost him a fuck ton of money)

>All the major Wizards have washed their hands of it all. Don't want or need any of that shit again, say "good luck" and continue with their lives.

>

>By the way, the players who complained about wizards the loudest had basically been using exploits to cheat, and had gotten caught. Often multiple times.

>Steve at one point agrees with the players that the wizards were bad for enforcing (his own) rules.

Steve is an impressive programmer (wyvern is better compared to an operating system than a game engine), and a normally likable guy, but ultimately he's a 40-50 yr technical guy that really shouldn't be the face of a company. And he knows this, and has basically said as much.

In any case, the new iteration of wyvern is up but in stasis. Steve changed jobs and is currently having to focus on that. The game may or may not go down in the near future (again, it fucking burns money). He's exploring different possibilities for the future to make it sustainable. I do think it's worth checking out, but don't expect a well thought through and balanced system. Like Crossfire, most of Wyvern's content was cobbled together by a bunch of player/mapmakers (Wizards). This also made it interesting. And hey the older art was fucking awesome. I'm not a big fan of the new art though, something is off about it. Probably the lack of color palette that the old art was restricted to.

I joined a roleplay-focused MUD not long ago and, while it's very comfy, the staff want your input and participation, and the coder consistently adds features, the players are just awful.

A good half of them are jaded and stick to cliques(which is shit since there's ~25 people total), guilds and religions are dormant and empty, and slice of life roleplay is the most dominant kind.

It's bad enough that newbies are smothered in desperate welcoming and inane "lol so randumb" bullshit, I tried getting fa/tg/uy friends to join in and they couldn't take it.

Those old graphics are really comfy! Reminds me of some CRPGs from late 80's - early 90's. Surely those old tiles and sprites are still online somewhere, in some CVS repository or something. Should be possible to make a version with those graphics.

Is it possible to play Crossfire solo (just by yourself on localhost server)? Seems like it, since there's monsters and NPCs. If that's the case, then the client version doesn't really matter. In my package system (pkgsrc on NetBSD), they have these:

crossfire-server-1.11.0nb31 X11 multi/single player game similar to gauntlet and nethack
crossfire-client-gtk2-1.11.0nb42 Multi-player graphical arcade and adventure game; GTK2 client
crossfire-client-gtk-1.11.0nb19 Multi-player graphical arcade and adventure game; GTK client
crossfire-client-1.11.0nb27 Multi-player graphical arcade and adventure game; X11 client

I installed the X11 "CF Client" (not gtk* based) and the game's website says "This client is deprecated and no longer supported; do not use it!", but this shouldn't matter if I don't connect to their servers.

You're exactly right and I actually have some old versions saved for exactly this purpose when I have time one day mess around with that. One version is a truly ancient 0.92.4 version, which was prior to any public CVS. I forgot where I dug it out of. It has the color filled 24x24 .xpm's (pixmaps) and as well as the monocolor .xbm images.

Crossfire is definitely more of a solo game, as the multiplayer interactions are fairly primitive, beyond chatting. Where other players make things interesting is typically the mess they leave laying around that you might stumble upon. Following other players was also an good way to learn tricks like the giant save zone I mentioned. There are some maps designed to require 2 or more people to trigger some map mechanics and advance.

Since it's a pretty rare version that was near impossible for me to find, if you're curious or appreciate this kind of old art I can upload them later as is, but be warned that all large image files are all chopped into 24 by 24 pixel tiles. And good luck actually getting this version to run, it has ancient dependencies. Linux distros that old tend not to like emulators and modern hardware either.

I should really upload this to the internet archive.
