>What is it?

Masters of the Orion Star Trek Edition. Even supposedly made by the same devs. It has recently been packed together with tons of mods and fixes to run on more modern systems without the need for a disc.

>Where do I download?

https://www.armadafleetcommand.com/get-files?cw_action=fileview&file_id=1958

>Whoa those instructions seem complicated

Not really, it's only there to help the most vicious of mouthbreathers install it or if you were retarded enough to get Windows 10. It's basically first two boxes ticked from install typically if you want to just play vanilla.

>What can you do in it?

You can conquer the galaxy via conquest or diplomacy playing the 5 major Alpha Quadrant powers. Use espionage and sabotage to gain leverage over opponents, even introduce biological weapons into someone's ecosystem killing millions and blame someone else for it. You can also build a subspace graviton field and make Bajor pay for it.

>How do the Federation play?

Like an attention whoring creepy girlfriend who wants to be everyone's friend. If you go to war with too many races your people will likely rebel. Ships focus more on defence and all rounded. Uses Diplomacy to gain power over a lot of Minor Races by making them become Members.

>How do the Klingons play?

Viking raiders. If you aren't fighting or make peace your people will get pissed off and likely rebel. That said they are surprisingly capable at diplomacy and will often have more warlike Minor Species waiting round the corner to join them. Have some very good fast and hard hitting ships plus their non-combat ships have weapons. A few of their ships also have cloaks.

>How do the Romulans play?

Like what North Korea wants to be. Tell everyone to GTFO their space and keep to themselves so naturally suck at diplomacy. Their ships are slow but powerful and all of them have cloaking devices. Have very good espionage and sabotage ability so if you are facing or playing them make sure your internal security rating is high.

>How do the Cardassians play?

We want it, we'll take it by whatever methods. Capable in conquest and diplomacy. Have a poor economic penalty at start and ships work best in squadrons. The only faction that can match the Romulans in terms of spying. Best at playing other factions against each other.

>How do the Ferengi play?

Like Jews. Be a happy merchant and make profit whenever you can. Get bonus amounts of trade routes and only need Non-Aggression Treaties to trade. Their ships are meh but cheap and can be spammed out using shekel making powers.

>What are Minor Races?

The weird eared and forehead creatures you see in Star Trek Episodes. While they may not have a lot of strength each race has a unique structure that can benefit your Empire which you can gain access to either through conquering them or by them becoming a member of your Empire. Some are Science focused, while others are Militaristic etc. Membership is often preferable to Conquest with most as they will provide you a developed system without the need to declare martial law every few turns.

Aye Cardassians are a bit OP when it comes to Intel in a late tech game, you need about 50 to deal with them adequately. Early game they are not so bad as they don't have the structures that provide ridiculous bonuses to Intel on top of the shit they got. Best advice is either to make peace with them or eradicate them quickly.

When I played Klingnons as soon as they started their shit I burst through with a fleet of Cruisers and took their home system. That put an end to their sabotage

Indeed sounds about right.

Tried another round as Romulans. Meet Ferengi early but they didn't me any problems. Don't run into Cardassians til turn 46. Half-way friendly bar, prepare some intel pop just in case but seems they didn't hit me right away. A few turns later encounter Klingons, two turns afterwards Klingon and Ferengi declare war on me. I got a few Romulan cruisers built-up this time, so we'll see how it goes.

Romulans can deal with the Cardassian espionage easily but nobody likes them. The thing is you may think the AI is cheating at times but a lot of the time what they are doing you can do yourself. Hell I had about 80 Intel Structures in one game as Cardassians and completely crippling Romulans in the spy war. In regards to churning out ships, they are likely abusing the fuck out of buy orders and likely have no disposable income. I once stopped all production in an Empire by having 9 Raiders steal their credits.

>The thing is you may think the AI is cheating at times but a lot of the time what they are doing you can do yourself. Hell I had about 80 Intel Structures in one game as Cardassians

That's all fine under normal game conditions, but keep in mind the scenario I'm talking about my primary planet has a population of 375 and my second 150-200 if I'm luck. I got a maximum of 57 population units at tech level 5, so I either have to allot them to Intel, or be able to balance research and ship production, impossible to do all three. There are no inhabited minor faction systems to sway to my side, all systems are uninhabited and need to built from scratch.

Meanwhile, AI can constantly crank out the Intel needed to rape me to hell and back, probably doable with the standard 100% espionage and sabotage bonuses some of those races have, but none the less, they're more capable of simultaneously fucking me over with intel while building a huge invasion force. When I refer to AI bonuses, it's a common method to give the AI to get reduced costs on ship production according to difficultly level, etc. (ex. 20% reduced industrial cost of all ships for AI)

I like the challenge though, I think the strategy is stay close to home and develop immediate systems near me and just hope I don't cross paths with Cardassians and Romulans until I can establish some partially upgraded colonies.

http://www.pcgamer.com/the-best-star-trek-games/

New article posted today, they include BotF in the list.

>That’s right, it’s the almost inevitable Master of Orion game in the Star Trek universe, and honestly I'm being a little generous including it here. Played casually, it’s absolutely fine—a fun game of expansion and discovery and scooping up minor races to be part of your growing empire. Over time though the length of turns renders it almost unplayable. Its main hook was definitely the familiar races, and being able to play with the likes of Klingons instead of just some random warlike species. The effectiveness of this shouldn’t be underestimated, and it’s easily one of the better attempts to paste the Trek universe over an existing game. If not for that though, it’s a pale shadow of not just later games like GalCiv, but prior strategy games from its own developer Microprose.

Is it possible to terraform and colonize a second planet in a system? Are Mars and the other planets in the Sol system considered already inhabited?

What do you mean? You colonize systems while terraforming planets in said system to make them habitable. You don't have to colonize each time you terraform a planet.

Birth of Empires and Supremacy are the only ones that are playable, if I recall. Supremacy is still buggy as shit, Empires is the most polished and "completed" but there is no Trek content, but all of their shit is heavily inspired by Trek. No one bothered to make an actual Star Trek mod in place, despite the original content serving as a place holder and reference point for a Star Trek mod.

Why is it when you're bombing off the tiny colonies not worth taking the Ferengi are the first to say you're destroying the wealth, but then once they're in a war they send out 250-odd ships to annihilate entire races?

This is an issue with the game; other empires are much more heavy-handed in their conquests, whereas any good player knows the right balance of capital ships and troop transports to take a system as efficiently as possible.

>Both games as Federation (I like the ships) and want to try diplomacy

>AI always rejects

>Disposition constantly falls

>Conquer some star systems which Feds hate hoping to push the AI towards peace, AI attitude barely changes

>Whenever an AI decides to ask for peace (almost never), they break it practically the next turn

What am I doing wrong? Am I just supposed to pour money into my enemies just to make friends? It seems like when you demonstrate you can eat them alive and ask for peace, the AI would be eager to accept. It seems like they should be showering me with gifts for peace and alliances.

I do always try to scoop up minor races, I guess that could make everyone hate me, but not that much.
