Can I watch the three movies just by themselves or will there be some essential context / lore missing from the series / manga?

It's pretty fucked up and hard to explain but basically the series takes place in a different continuity, while movies are the prequels iirc. It's probably best to watch in release order tbh.

The movies rely on the series in a vice-versa manner. They either require you to watch the ovas and the series before them or after them. You can watch them on their own, but the experience will be limited for they are not stand alone features.

I do not know what the popular opinion is, but I watched the movies first and didn't feel totally lost. I am watching the series now and it is way more comedic getting more serious later on them the movies.

The movies are direct sequels to the first OVA. Watch that first, its only 7 episodes and will familiarize you with the characters and setting.
