I don't like "rationalist" as a term for our weird geeky niche, since "do you identify as a rationalist" = "are you in favour of this Applause Light?" and probably all of /r/atheism would identify as a rationalist if you just asked. That makes it a poor term for our particular thing about Bayes and the Robot Apocalypse.

We're a movement that accreted around Yudkowsky though. Maybe we can all agree there's cancerous bits that need purging, but between us /ratanon/s posting /pol/ memes and bonobo rat-tumb socialing the justice, there's nothing the whole movement would agree on.
I think at this point, Ozy's right that a "rationalist" is someone who argues about these Yudkowsky-related topics, whether pro- or anti-. Actual rationality content is a distant second in any forum where rationalists are.
