Did everyone else read the same book?

I read it and thought it was pretty obvious chris had shitty parents and a shitty childhood, it didn’t really seem at all subtle and the undertones of it seemed to be overwhelming

And then I look through discussion about the book, or talk about the book and I hear the same thing over and over

“He shouldn’t of put his parents through that” and they paint this picture of these loving sweetheart parents and some spoiled son who just has this irrational hate for his parents

Am i crazy? Are these people just fucking retarded? how could you possibly arrive at this conclusion?

Usually id post to /lit/ but i got banned from 4chan so now I’m stuck in this shithole

I never read his book bout I watch his movie . they don't tell anything much about his parents. I respect his choice of life . I think if he is in india he will be some Yogi in the forest .with more comfortable life and society .

this is an intereating take, and fits. I read the book many years ago, so my memory is hazy. i think the book did not talk in detail about his parents or home life. i also had thought he had siblings, at least a sister, and if his homelife was abusive or neglectful, you'd think she/they would have something to say about it, or even just have grown up weird. i know the book was written not long after his passing (actually, it was an expansion of a hastily written magazine article by the same author, which was shortly after his passing). I thought the sibling had come off as "normal," well-adjusted.

The unquenchable wanderlust and ennui whose origin remained an enigma I thought was what made the character compelling to the author
