If its controlling your mind and telling everyone how to conduct the economy then its going to quickly devolve and make no sense before it fails -- and at that point at least we can say the computer learned what not to do the next time around.

Its the entire premise of the conclusion of the Christian religion , and without external input or data to analyze, even an AI that controls your planet couldn't see through the lies given to you by your religion.

Of course some bases we're covered like creating an ultimate evil that would oppose your alien overlord who seeks to collect you and send you to a new earth at end times.

For instance, small changes in history were made in order to shrink the size of metropolis. An oil embargo amongst other things -- but the legend of superman was great enough to remain as a resonating force throughout each iteration of earth. So it remains in its shrunken form.

The key to identifying the influence and control of an A.I. network is that it makes small changes through each iteration of its simulation.
