Not a doomsayer, but we are at a very peculiar point in history. In the past, wars didn't carry a risk of nuclear holocaust. Then there's the fact that our entire civilization stands like a house of cards. All it takes is a strong enough push to collapse it all and then the chaos ensues. People today are far more dependant on the system than in the past so if it collapses, most of them will die.

Basically, we're at a point when something like the apocalypse might very easily happen and it's no wonder some are panicking.

People keep trying to forsee the future of what's going to happen on a global scale decades from now, when they can't even forsee what they're going to have for dinner 3 days from now.

Their predictions usually go "there are bad events happening right now. I predict they'll never go away, and things will keep getting worse, and then they'll be so bad that everyone will die."

If you want ot feed such a pessimistic fantasy then apocalypse isn't the worst imaginable scenario. A scenario where the apocalypse never comes is much scarier. Imagine that everything keeps getting worse. Violence, disease, and societal horrors keep escalating, yet no apocalypse comes to end it all because the rate at which things are rebuilt exceeds the rate of destruction due to technology and an overpopulated work force. You could have a world with no private property because all the land is covered in high-rise apartments and everyone has to live in an apartment with 10 other people you hate. What makes such a future possibe is the fact that people keep reproducing even in the worst scenarios imaginable (during wars, famines, in concentration camps during WWII).
