Empathy isn't a switch that activates. It's something that is always present in most wolves and sheep. Feeling bad for someone means your empathy has been dialed up. That trigger is the reason many wolves that steal can't commit murder if they wanted to.
Anonymous social media isn't a real social life. A real social life lets your brain know it's a real social situation and you have to follow the rules. The social filter disappears but the ability to take something from someone doesn't appear.

Since most people's social filters disappear, it's a type of cooperation. Wolves do things that sheep can't, that's what makes them so dangerous.
