ASCI Red: the Advanced Simulation and Computing Program (ASC) is a super computing program run by the NNSA (National Nuclear Security Administration). It’s aimed at simulating, testing, and securing the U.S. nuclear stockpile. After the 1992 moratorium on live nuclear testing, computer simulations had to be used instead. In 1995, the program was created to support the Stockpile Stewardship Program. ASCI Red was the first computer built for this program. It was built by Intel and installed at (where else?) Sandia National Labs. It was used from 1997 to 2005. It was decommissioned in 2006.
