Yes a break in procedure caused it. First off, the heliports are not made from aluminum. Second of all, Have you EVER in your lifetime been anywhere near a natural gas fire that is burning? Ever wonder why there are towers or large booms hang off the side of production facilities? It's because when high volumes of gas that is flared for any reason, it keeps the intense heat away from equipment. The power went out because as per BSEE, we are required to have gas detection devices installed in all engine intakes, A/C unit ducting and ANY enclosed areas. When the gas detector sensed gas, it closed a damper that shut off air coming in to the engine. No air> no running engine>no power. That's why the power went out. The natural gas was likely ignited from the hot turbo housing on the engine. The hole in the heliport was where heat was being channeled under due to the design of the facility. Do you have any clue of the amount of heat that being produced from that fire? A laser from space did that??? That's the best one I've heard yet.

Look at the melting over the top of the steel supports underneath. Assuming they used 7075 (structural support, offshore saltwater environment) then I assure you that no random explosion underneath could have done this. Looking at the edge of the hole (close up) you'll see the stringers of molten aluminum.
That was caused by extreme, tightly confined heat.
