North Carolina:The state starts processing mail-in ballots before Election Day and will begin counting its absentee ballots on Election Day before the polls close—anywhere between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. under state law, with counties adopting resolutions before Election Day that state when they’ll specifically start counting. The state’s election board said in February its processes mean absentee ballots returned before Election Day should be counted by that evening, though ballots returned on Election Day could take longer. North Carolina passed a new voting law that requires officials to hold off on counting in-person early voting ballots until polls close on Election Day, however, which could slightly delay those results by around an hour on election night.

Battleground States Counting Mail Ballots Before Election Day

Arizona:. The state starts counting early mail-in ballots when they’re received, even if that’s prior to Election Day. The state’s counting could still get slowed down by a regulation that requires officials to wait until polls are closed and all voters have left until they collect ballots that were left in ballot drop boxes on Election Day, however. That could be a sizable share of the vote, with the Maricopa County Recorder’s Office noting those ballots made up 20% of all the county’s ballots in the 2022 general election. Election results could also be slowed down as officials have to process Election Day mail-in ballots and verify signatures before sending them off to be counted, which Maricopa County—the state’s most populous county—said took until the Sunday after Election Day to complete in 2022.

Michigan:Michigan lawmakers passed a new law after the 2020 election that now allows absentee votes to start being counted eight days before Election Day, or the day before Election Day for towns with fewer than 5,000 people. That means many results are likely to be quickly reported in the state once polls close.

Nevada:Unlike in 2020, the state now allows mail-in ballots to start being counted 15 days before Election Day, and officials can count ballots as they come in on Election Day. That means results are likely to come out more quickly than in 2020, when it took several days before the state’s race was called for President Joe Biden.

What We Don’t Know

How long it will take exactly for mail-in votes to be counted. Voters are likely to be less reliant on mail-in voting in this election than they were in 2020, when many voters cast their ballots by mail due to the COVID-19 pandemic. It took days to call that presidential election as a result, as Biden pulled off only a narrow win that required counting most of the mail-in ballots to call. That being said, states are still reporting high numbers of requests for absentee ballots—including approximately 716,000 in Wisconsin and 1.9 million in Pennsylvania, the two slowest states for reporting—suggesting ballots could still take a while to count.

==TENNESSEE AG EXPOSES FEDERAL RELEASE OF ILLEGAL IMMIGRANTS CONVICTED OF DANGEROUS CRIMES

NASHVILLE ==– Tennessee Attorney General Jonathan Skrmetti today announced that following a successful lawsuit by the Tennessee Attorney General’s Office, United States Immigration and Customs Enforcement (“ICE”) was forced to produce previously undisclosed information about the agency’s release of thousands of detained migrants, including dangerous convicted criminals. The hundreds of pages of documents obtained shed light on federal authorities’ since-abandoned plan to transport potentially thousands of “single adult” immigration detainees into Tennessee.

The records show that ICE’s plan to release migrants into this State was derailed by pushback from Tennessee’s Governor and U.S. Senators and ultimately stopped through successful litigation by the Tennessee Attorney General’s Office and other States. The information further reveals that although ICE abandoned its failed plan for the mass release of detainees into Tennessee, the agency nonetheless released over 7,000 detainees directly from its Louisiana facilities at that time, including more than 30 who were assigned ICE’s highest security-threat level. Released detainees had criminal records, including homicide, sexual assault, aggravated assault with a weapon, armed robbery, kidnapping, smuggling aliens, drug trafficking, burglary, and fraud.

“The federal government’s single most important job is to keep dangerous people out of our country and instead it has let killers and rapists illegally cross our border and walk free on our streets,” said Tennessee Attorney General Jonathan Skrmetti. “While the urgent work to fix our broken immigration system continues in Washington, my Office will keep fighting for transparency and accountability.”

In December 2022, the Governor’s Office learned that ICE had been coordinating with local immigration-rights groupsand Nashville officials to release large numbers of detainees into Tennessee before the anticipated termination of the federal government’s Title 42 public health order. With support from the Governor, the Tennessee Attorney General’s Office immediately worked to obtain answers from the federal government. When federal authorities failed to respond to Tennessee’s Freedom of Information Act requests, the Attorney General’s Office filed suit.

As a result of the litigation, ICE searched for and produced hundreds of pages of responsive records that revealed the following:

Coordination between ICE, Nashville city officials, and a Tennessee immigration nonprofit to arrange for the mass release of detainees into Tennessee

ICE originally planned to release thousands of single, adult, non-citizen detainees from its Louisiana detention facilities into Tennessee

Data from ICE showing the release from its Louisiana detention facilities of non-citizen detainees with violent criminal records, including murder, rape, and kidnapping

Former President Bill Clinton described Arizona Senate candidate and close Trump ally Kari Lake as 'physically attractive' during a campaign event with her opponent on Wednesday evening.

The comments were designed to highlight how the firebrand Republican saw politics as a performance.

But they could be seen as an own goal, coming from a politician with a reputation as a womanizer.

Clinton appeared alongside Democratic candidate Reuben Gallego, 44, and set out his view of the Arizona race.

'This is like a beautiful microcosm of the campaign that Kamala Harris is running for president,' he said.

'You got a person that grew up under sometimes challenging circumstances, who made something of his life running against someone who is physically attractive but believes that politics is a performance Art, and where, like J.D. Vance, she has to be prostate before the master.'

The 78-year-old, who was president from 1993 to 2001, likely meant 'prostrate.'

Lake, 55, rose to fame in the Phoenix area as a television news anchor, leveraging that into a headline-grabbing run for governor in 2022.

She lost narrowly but her allegations of election fraud chimed with former President Donald Trump own strategy and she she has become a darling of the MAGA faithful.

Since then she has tried to navigate a path to the center as she takes on Gallego, a Marine veteran and 10-year member of Congress.

In recent weeks she has closed the gap on Gallego. But six different polls published in the past week or so suggest she is running at an average of 43 percent to his 50 percent.

Democrats have won three Senate races in a row since 2018, and the contest this year is for the seat vacated by Sen. Kyrsten Sinema, who won as a Democratic candidate before turning independent.

It is not the first time Clinton has been accused of making a gaffe.
