State-Mandated Mourning for Aborted Fetuses
A new Indiana law is part of a wave of legislation that requires burial or cremation following abortions. What’s behind it?

Here’s what will happen after a woman gets an abortion in the state of Indiana, starting this July. She will be told, verbally and in writing, that she has the right to choose what she does with her aborted fetus. She will be given a list of her options for disposal, and offered counseling. The fetus does not have to be named, but it will receive its own burial-transit form, just like any dead body. This form will travel with it to a funeral home, where it will be buried or cremated. There won’t necessarily be a ceremony; the fetus may not get its own headstone or urn. But it will be laid to rest in the way of a human. Aborted fetuses in Indiana, nearly all smaller than a peapod, will no longer be treated as medical waste.
This is what the state’s legislature decided back in March. It passed a wide-ranging bill, making it a criminal offense to dispose of fetal remains in any other way besides burial or cremation, including in cases of abortions, miscarriages, and stillbirths.
Which raises a question: Why would a state create a mourning ritual for no one?
For women who choose to have an abortion, the process can still end once the pills are swallowed or the stirrups are down. If families choose not to handle the disposal process, hospitals and clinics are responsible for taking care of the remains, along with the funeral and cemetery businesses with which they work. Absent state-mandated funerals or car rides to the crematorium, women don’t have to help their fetuses come to a dignified end; abortion providers and funeral directors will be the only witnesses to the interment or cremation. And even though fetuses are now afforded the disposition rights of humans, they still don’t have other rights of personhood—including, for example, the right to life. According to United States law, fetuses are not people.
Indiana is not alone in its concern for the final resting place of fetuses. In March, South Dakota made it illegal to use aborted fetal tissue in research, and in April, Idaho and Alabama made it illegal to buy, sell, donate, or experiment on these remains. Tennessee made it illegal for sale. The legislatures of Ohio, South Carolina, and Mississippi have all recently considered burial and cremation requirements, and Arkansas and Georgia already have similar statutes in place. Like many of these other states, Indiana’s law effectively prohibits women or health-care facilities from donating fetal tissue for medical research.

A study by the Media Research Center (MRC) found that Elon Musk’s X (formerly Twitter) algorithm promotes left-leaning media, while punishing a majority of right-leaning media.
The MRC reviewed 62 media outlets on the political left, center, and right, finding that Elon Musk’s X social media platform “overwhelmingly favors left-leaning media,” boosting 100 percent of the 30 left-leaning mediaoutlets reviewed,while de-boosting 74 percent of the 23 right-leaningmedia outlets reviewed.
“Elon Musk has been cleaning house at X to turn it into a free speech platform,” MRC Vice President for Free Speech Dan Schneider said. “The transformation has been astounding, but he still has to excise some of the ghosts from the Jack Dorsey era who continue to engage in election interference.”
The MCR noted that X’s AI tool “Grok” explains thatX uses a “Reputation” score to determine “the visibility and likelihood of a user’s content being recommended to others.” Thisreputation score favors leftist media, likely by design under the previous leadership of X/Twitter.
When MRC researchers asked Grok to explain itself, the AI chatbot said “theminimum Tweepcred[Reputation] score required for a userto be recommended on Twitter is 65,” indicating that any account with a lower score is de-boosted.
Moreover, Grok added, “Accounts with higher Tweepcred scores are more likely to have their posts seen by a larger audience, while those with lower scores may have their posts deprioritized in the platform’s algorithm.” In the case of media outlets,there is a clear tendency for X to give conservative media lower reputation scores, resulting in deboosting and lower engagement, as compared to leftist outlets that enjoy boosting based on their reputation scores.
In researching X’s algorithm, the MRC said it used a previously disclosed methodology to determine the scores of each media outlet,examining media from a list provided by AllSides— which classifies the outlets based on “right” to “left” political affiliation.
The MRC pointed out that its study comes after two earlier studies that also found X’s algorithm favors left-leaning media.
The first study discovered that X boosted congressional Democrats’ social media posts while suppressing posts from Republicans ahead of the 2024 election.
The second study found that X’s algorithm favors Vice President Kamala Harris over Sen. JD Vance (R-OH), former President Donald Trump’s running mate. This is likely helping Harris reach a broader audience in the months leading up to the 2024 presidential election.
As the MRC’s Dan Schneider pointed out,X’s algorithm bias — and inevitable election interference— may not be the fault of Musk, who still has considerable work to clean up code and algorithms that have been left behind from site’s “Twitter” days.
