German politician Ursula von der Leyen will continue on as the top woman in Brussels, securing 401 votes for her re-election in the 720-seat European Parliament on Thursday compared to 284 against, Euronews reports.
Prior to the vote, the top globalist said that if given a second term she would double down on key issues, notably the European Green New Deal and the plans to see Ukraine join the European Union.
She also appears set to continue her longtime battle with Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán, whom she personally signalled out in her speech Thursday over his recent trip to Moscow to advocate for a peace settlement.

The victim protested the ruling with a gruesome stunt in front of the courthouse, local media report
A Ukrainian woman doused herself in flammable liquid and self-immolated in front of a courthouse in the Kiev region, reportedly in protest of her husband’s conscription being denied a postponement.
The Kiev region police confirmed that the incident took place at around 4 pm on Thursday. Once court security noticed her dousing herself with a flammable substance, the guards “tried to stop her, but the woman set herself on fire,” the police wrote on Telegram.
“Upon arrival, the woman was conscious but had about 70% burns to her body surface area,” the post said, adding that she was rushed to the hospital.
Gruesome video circulating online showed the woman walking onto the roundabout in front of the courthouse, dropping her handbag on the ground while pouring a liquid over herself. She then faced the building with open arms before writhing and stumbling to the ground as flames engulfed her. Three people ran out of the building and used a fire extinguisher on the woman. No serious damage was discovered after the aircraft landed in the Russian city of Krasnoyarsk
An Air India Boeing 777 made an emergency landing in the city of Krasnoyarsk, Central Russia on Thursday. Flight AI183 en route from New Delhi to San Francisco had to change course because of a potential fire on board.
Around 18:30 (Moscow time), the crew reported to flight control that a fire alarm had been triggered in the cargo hold and requested an emergency landing. At the time, the plane was flying over Siberia at an altitude of some 11,000 meters. It was diverted and landed safely in Krasnoyarsk.
The Russian Federal Air Transport Agency (Rosaviatsia) subsequently reported that no fire or smoke was discovered on board. Russian specialists also found no serious damage after a preliminary inspection of the plane. Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and Toronto Mayor Olivia Chow blame flooding in Ontario’s capital city on climate change but one expert says some places are better equipped to deal with heavy rain than others.
Neither leader gave specific evidence on how climate change affected the flooding but confidently assured that more would be expected as a result.
Kenneth Green, a senior fellow at the Fraser Institute and Frontier Centre for Public Policy has written extensively on public policy and he told True North that Chow was discussing adaptation more than additional greenhouse gas reduction measures, such as a further increase to the carbon tax.
A market-based “adaptation” measure would include creating incentives for people to keep more of their land permeable to water penetration, rather than paved over with impermeable materials, Green explained.
“An adaptationist response to climate risk is, I think, far more rational than the idea of reducing GHG emissions, so the more the government focuses on things like this, the better,” he said
Green has warned that “Canadians will pay dearly for Ottawa’s carbon tax,” estimating that it will cause a 1.8% drop in GDP and a loss of 185,000 jobs by 2030.
Chow said that she expects the number of severe rainstorm days to double in the next 15 years, due to climate change and that the only way to fight this inevitability was government measures. Continue…

A firm specializing in satellite imagery analysis of tanker movements reported on X early Friday that two oil tankers collided in one of the world's busiest waterways east of Singapore, sparking fires on both vessels.
TankerTrackers said (AIS) data, which broadcasts vessel coordinates to track vessel movements and support maritime safety, shows the "Oil-laden Panamax-sized tanker HAFNIA NILE (9766217) had knocked into the starboard bow of the empty dark fleet VLCC called CERES I (9229439)."
The collision between Hafnia Nile, a Singapore-flagged refined-products tanker, and Ceres I, a crude oil tanker sailing under the flag of Sao Tome & Principe, occurred "in the international waters of the Riau archipelago this morning," TankerTrackers explained, adding that Hafnia Nile hit Ceres I at a speed of around 14.2 knots at the time of the incident.

Estanguet added: “After twenty years of doing sports in the river, I find it admirable that we are trying to clean it up.”
In preparation for the Summer Games starting on July 26 with a grand open-air ceremony featuring an athletes' parade on boats on the Seine, efforts are underway to highlight the river's improved cleanliness.

In the first case, the Polish Administrative Court in Białystok ruled in favor of an Afghan man who fell while trying to breach a border barrier on the night of April 3, 2023, resulting in a broken foot.
After receiving medical treatment in a Polish hospital, he was taken back to the border with Belarus. Upon completing his treatment, Polish activists informed him of his right to file a complaint against the actions of the Polish officials.

“Our goal with this letter is to inform you about the failure of this process, highlight its potential impacts on the sector and on the Canadian economy, and propose solutions to move forward. We do not make these statements lightly,” reads the letter obtained by True North.
Electricity Canada has consulted with Environment Canada about Canada’s proposed electricity regulations under a non-disclosure agreement since Feb. 2024.
The non-disclosure agreement was intended to allow Environment Canada to share modelling and assumptions to enable industry feedback on carbon reductions, reliability, and cost.
Electricity Canada said that Environment Canada agreed to an aggressive schedule of meetings and workshops when signing the non-disclosure agreement.
“However, the department has repeatedly delayed sharing the information for which the NDA process was intended. Despite repeated attempts over the last four months, as of this writing, ECCC has not yet provided their modelling and the assumptions contained material factual errors, making it impossible for industry to provide meaningful feedback,” reads the letter.
Electricity Canada relayed its concerns to Environment Canada on May 28. The agency has informed Electricity Canada that the formal consultation period will end within a few weeks. Continue…

Blaine Higgs pledges to cut New Brunswick HST by 2% if re-elected

New Brunsick’s provincial government has pledged to cut the Harmonized Sales Tax by two percent if re-elected.
While the next provincial election hasn’t officially been called yet, Premier Blaine Higgs wants to get the message out before his party begins campaigning.
Higgs made the announcement during a press conference in Moncton on Thursday.
“New Brunswickers know better than government how to spend their own money,” said Higgs. “With the cut to the HST, they’ll have more money to work with.”
The premier said his government could make the cut possible as a result of “strong, smart policies and disciplined fiscal management have resulted in six consecutive balanced budgets.”
Once implemented, New Brunswick will have the lowest HST of all the Atlantic provinces and Quebec.
“We’re able to do this because we can and because we’ve been fiscally responsible since we started, since the very beginning,” said Higgs. “All the while, we’ll maintain our balanced budget.” Continue…

A man who was arrested and charged for filming police outside a Toronto police station has had his charges withdrawn and is now seeking damages from the department.
James Hearn was charged with criminal harassment after police approached him while he was filming a Toronto police station from a city sidewalk.
He was arrested after an officer claimed to feel “harassed and intimidated” by his conduct.
The officer demanded to know why he was filming but Hearn refused to answer, which led to him being arrested, charged and held for bail.
“Mr. Hearn was charged with criminal harassment and intimidation for filming the outside of 52 Division in Toronto after a police officer who was pulling into the underground parking garage complained about feeling harassed and intimidated by Hearn’s conduct,” Hearn’s defence lawyer, Alan Honner, told True North.
Following his arrest, Hearn was searched and had his recording equipment, including the smartphone he’d used to capture the interaction between him and the complainant police officer, seized.
Hearn operates a YouTube channel called “Ontario Audit” which he uses to share experiences he’s had with law enforcement and government officials. Continue…

Ontarians running low on their stocked-up liquor supply may be in luck after the weekend.
The LCBO has announced a “tentative agreement” with the Ontario Public Service Employees Union, ending the strike by next Tuesday.
According to the LCBO, the strike will end at 12:01 a.m. on Monday, July 22, and staff will “return to business as usual” on Tuesday, though the terms of the agreement have yet to be ratified.
“We recognize the disruption the strike caused for our employees, partners, and customers who rely on our services, and we thank everyone for their continued patience and understanding as we begin resuming regular operations,” the public company said in a release.
The LCBO said it would share further details once the agreement is ratified.

The Globe and Mail reported Thursday that Alberta cabinet ministers and government officials attended Stanley Cup playoff games in a Rogers Centre suite as guests of Sam Mraiche, whose company was part of the deal to obtain children’s medicine from a Turkish pharmaceutical company during a shortage in 2022.
Former MLA Drew Barnes was first elected under the Wildrose banner led by Smith in 2012, which pitched itself as an alternative to the increasingly corrupt PC government.
“In 2012, Danielle and many of us felt called to Edmonton to represent everyday Albertans and end cronyism, drastically reduce and reform lobbying, reduce the size and reach of government,” Barnes told True North.

Canada’s Campaign Life Coalition will host a courthouse gathering in support of veteran pro-life witness Linda Gibbons this Monday.
Gibbons, who has been imprisoned since late June, will be appearing at the Ontario Court of Justice, Room 901, 10 Armoury Street, Toronto, on Monday, July 22 at 10 a.m. There she will face four charges of contravening the “Safe Access to Abortion Services Act, 2017″ and one charge of mischief to property/enjoyment/operation. However, the 75-year-old grandmother will not be standing alone.
“Campaign Life Coalition is organizing a gathering on Monday outside the courthouse as a show of solidarity for Linda,” Campaign Life (CLC) spokesman Pete Baklinski told LifeSiteNews via email.
“We plan on being inside and outside the courtroom. We’ll have signs in support of Linda and signs demanding that the law that put her in jail be repealed.”
Baklinski also volunteered that CLC has launched a petition calling on Ontario Attorney General Doug Downey and Premier Doug Ford to repeal the “Safe Access to Abortion Services Act, 2017.” The legislation prohibits anyone from protesting within 50 metres of abortion facilities. A pro-abortion Liberal Member of Parliament (MP) bizarrely implied that the health of “newborns” is at risk because of legislation restricting abortion.
In a July 16 post on X, Liberal MP and abortion champion Dr. Hedy Fry stated that she was attending a conference to discuss the “risks” posed to mothers and their newborn babies from legislation restricting abortion and contraception.
“Reelected Co-Chair of Can Assoc of Parls for Pop Development (CAPPD), with Sen McPhedran,” she posted with a picture of the Zoom meeting. “Concern at AGM [Annual General Meeting] over the risk to Women’s health & that of their newborns as extreme right govts deny access to contraception & safe abortion globally.”

Around a billion computers are bricked worldwide, mostly corporate ones.
This isn't just an online service going down for a few hours. Every affected computer needs to be rebooted in fail mode and have a driver manually removed.
Most corporate computers given to employees don't let users do this themselves. Even if they could, imagine every single double-digit IQ wagie trying to handle a moderately complex task when many don't even know what a file is anymore.

The Supreme Court of Canada ruled Friday that the Canadian government can be held liable for enacting laws that are “clearly unconstitutional,” done in bad faith, or stem from abuse of power.
Chief Justice Richard Wagner and Justice Andromache Karakatsanis, writing for the majority, rejected the state’s argument that Canada has absolute immunity from damages for enacting unconstitutional laws. The court reaffirmed the 2002 Supreme Court of Canada decision in Mackin v New Brunswick, which held that the state only has limited immunity. The majority clarified the immunity threshold as being an enactment that is “clearly unconstitutional,” such that the “lawmakers knew the law was unconstitutional or were reckless or wilfully blind as to its unconstitutionality.” If met, then the state can be held liable for damages.
The court reiterated the importance of damages as a remedy for state violations of the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms. The court highlighted that section 24(1) of the Charter, allows a court to provide “such remedy as the court considers appropriate and just in the circumstances,” underscoring the necessity to hold the state accountable.
This case arose from a Charter challenge by an individual who had completed his sentence for two criminal convictions. At the time of his conviction, he was eligible to apply for a criminal record suspension five years post-release. A subsequent law enacted by Parliament retroactively made him permanently ineligible. The individual sued for violation of two Charter rights, sections 11(h) and 11(i), and sought damages under section 24(1) of the Charter.
Canada responded by acknowledging the law’s unconstitutionality but claimed absolute state immunity in its legislative powers. Both lower courts upheld the state’s limited immunity as set out in Mackin. Canada then appealed to the Supreme Court, leading to Friday’s ruling affirming and clarifying the limited immunity threshold.
The central issue was the separation of powers between Parliament and the judiciary. The five-judge majority and four dissenting justices disagreed on whether parliamentary privilege was involved. This privilege, among other things, grants absolute immunity to Parliament for conduct that is within their “sphere of activity.” The majority’s view was that this privilege was not implicated, which is why they adopted a limited immunity approach. The dissenting opinions argued that privilege was implicated and that the majority’s decision encroached into Parliament’s “sphere.”
Historically, Canada’s legal order under parliamentary supremacy meant laws passed by Parliament were limited only by jurisdiction. There were virtually no other checks on its power. In 1982, the advent of the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms altered Canada’s legal order into one where Parliament’s power was checked by a constitution that guaranteed fundamental rights. This change established the Constitution as the supreme law of Canada. It tasked the judiciary with guarding Charter rights against state infringement.
