New research raises concerns over Zombie Deer Disease transmission to humans

Scientists have been saying for a while that this sickness, called chronic wasting disease (CWD), is very deadly and can make deer act strangely, like being confused, drooling, and not scared of people. They’ve warned that it could spread from animals to humans. Now, a recent study suggests that it might have happened already, with two hunters dying in 2022 after eating meat from infected deer.

A 72-year-old man experienced sudden confusion, aggression, and seizures before his health rapidly declined, leading to his death within a month. Doctors later determined that he had Creutzfeldt-Jakob Disease (CJD), a brain disorder similar to Mad Cow Disease. Another person, a friend of the hunter, also died from CJD. But there aren’t many details available about their condition in the recent research published in the journal Neurology.

The researchers involved in the study are from Texas, but specific information about where the deaths occurred hasn’t been disclosed. DailyMail.com has reached out to the researchers for further comment.

Researchers suspect that because both hunters had a history of consuming meat from the same infected herd, they might have contracted CWD themselves. “Although causation remains unproven, this cluster emphasizes the need for further investigation into the potential risks of consuming CWD-infected deer and its implications for public health,” the authors wrote.

Understanding the spread and impact of Chronic Wasting Disease

CJD is caused by misshapen proteins called prions, which don’t fold correctly. Once infected, these abnormal prions spread throughout the central nervous system, leaving deposits in the brain and other organs. There are currently no treatments or vaccines available for CWD, and the illness is fatal in all cases.

While the exact way the disease spreads isn’t entirely understood, it’s believed that it passes from one animal to another through contaminated forage or water, often tainted by infected feces. Direct contact, including exposure to saliva, blood, urine, and even antler velvet during shedding season, may also contribute to transmitting the pathogen.

On farms, any deer that dies must be tested for CWD to prevent further spread. Since the disease is highly contagious, if one animal tests positive, the entire herd is considered infected.

China has backed the right of the Palestinian people to use armed force to combat Israel's occupation of their land, calling it an "an inalienable right well founded in international law".

The comments on Thursday were made by the Chinese ambassador to the UN, Zhang Jun, during the fourth day of public hearings held by the International Court of Justice (ICJ) in The Hague, Netherlands.

Representatives of 52 countries are addressing the ICJ on Israel's decades-long occupation of Palestinian land.

Beijing’s envoy said there were "various people (who) freed themselves from colonial rule" and they could use "all available means, including armed struggle".

He described the Palestinian use of armed resistance as legitimate and not an act of terrorism.

"The struggle waged by peoples for their liberation, right to self-determination, including armed struggle against colonialism, occupation, aggression, domination against foreign forces should not be considered terror acts," Zhang Jun told the court.

In his speech, Jun criticized Israeli policies, characterizing them as “oppression that has severely undermined and impeded the exercises and full realization of the Palestinian people’s right to self-determination".

The ICJ’s public hearings, which will be held until February 26, come after a UN General Assembly resolution requesting an ICJ advisory opinion.

The number of states participating in the oral proceedings is the highest of any case since the ICJ's establishment in 1945 and is separate to the more publicized genocide case brought by South Africa. A panel of 15 judges are expected to take about six months to deliberate before issuing an advisory opinion.

Besides China, other countries scheduled to participate in the hearings include Hungary, France, South Africa and Egypt.

International bodies, including the Arab League, the Organization of Islamic Cooperation and the African Union will also take part. Israel will not participate but has sent written observations to the court.

Objective:

This study presents a cluster of Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease (CJD) cases after exposure to chronic wasting disease (CWD)-infected deer, suggestive of potential prion transmission from CWD-infected deer to humans.

Background:

CJD is a rapidly progressive central nervous system disorder caused by misfolded prion proteins. CWD, a prion disease prevalent in North American deer, has raised concerns due to its possible link to CJD. Although no conclusive evidence of cross-species prion transmission exists, vigilance for such cases is crucial for public health.

Design/Methods:

Not applicable.

Results:

In 2022, a 72-year-old man with a history of consuming meat from a CWD-infected deer population presented with rapid-onset confusion and aggression. His friend, who had also eaten venison from the same deer population, recently died of CJD, raising concerns about a potential link between CWD and human prion disease. Despite aggressive symptomatic treatment of seizures and agitation, the patient’s condition deteriorated and he died within a month of initial presentation. The diagnosis was confirmed postmortem as sporadic CJD with homozygous methionine at codon 129 (sCJDMM1). The patient’s history, including a similar case in his social group, suggests a possible novel animal-to-human transmission of CWD. Based on non-human primate and mouse models, cross-species transmission of CJD is plausible. Due to the challenge of distinguishing sCJDMM1 from CWD without detailed prion protein characterization, it is not possible to definitively rule out CWD in these cases. Although causation remains unproven, this cluster emphasizes the need for further investigation into the potential risks of consuming CWD-infected deer and its implications for public health.

Conclusions:

Clusters of sporadic CJD cases may occur in regions with CWD-confirmed deer populations, hinting at potential cross-species prion transmission. Surveillance and further research are essential to better understand this possible association.
