CanSino's inhaled COVID-19 vaccine gets emergency use approval in China

HONG KONG: China's CanSino Biologics Inc said on Sunday (Sep 4) that its recently developed COVID-19 vaccine has been approved by the country's drug regulator for emergency use as a booster, potentially benefiting its business.

The inhaled version of CanSino's adenovirus-vectored COVID-19 vaccine has obtained the green light from the National Medical Products Administration, the company said in a filing on Sunday.

"The approval will have a positive impact on the company's performance if the vaccine is subsequently purchased and used by relevant government agencies," CanSino said.

The company cautioned, however, that it will face fierce competition from other vaccines in China that have also obtained government approval or are in clinical trials.

China granted emergency use authorisation to Livzon Pharmaceutical Group Inc's COVID-19 vaccine as a booster, Livzon said on Friday, one of just two new products against the disease the country had cleared in more than a year.

CanSino also said it was uncertain when its vaccine would be able to go to market, since additional administrative approvals are still needed, while sales would depend on the COVID-19 situation at home and abroad, as well as China's vaccination rate.

China has seen a recent flare-up in COVID-19 outbreaks. The southern tech hub of Shenzhen imposed a weekend lockdown in most parts of the city on Saturday, while the southwestern metropolis of Chengdu put its 21 million people under lockdown on Thursday.

Mainland China reported 1,848 new coronavirus cases on Sep 3, including both symptomatic and asymptomatic infections, compared with 1,988 new cases a day earlier.

This summer, the U.S. government under the Biden presidency changed specific technical requirements requiring all immigrants and refugees entering the country to prove COVID-19 vaccination. This includes babies as young as 6-month-old. Under the Biden administration, the World Health Organization (WHO) International Health Regulations (IHR) determine the status of health emergencies, triggering domestic laws which prompt executive branch agencies to action, including rulemaking and associated technical requirements of all sorts. The new requirements are found in the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) titled “CDC Requirements for Immigrant Medical examinations: COVID-19 Technical Instructions for Panel Physicians;” the stated goal is “Immigrant, Refugee and Migrant Health.” Because few countries vaccinate babies as young as 6-month-old against SARS-CoV-2, the youngest immigrants, migrants, or refugees entering America will need to be inoculated with BNT162b2, the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine available for young persons, as young as 6-months old.

A Higher Authority

First, it’s important to understand that this new requirement of entry is based on the fact that the U.S. defers to the WHO determination of health emergency via the International Health Regulations framework. The CDC shares on their website:

“The current pandemic of Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) has been determined by the World Health Organization (WHO) to be a public health emergency of international concern (PHEIC) under the International Health Regulations. COVID-19 meets the definition of a quarantinable communicable disease under 42 USC 264 and Executive Order 13295, as amended by Executive Order 13375 and 13674. Specifically, COVID-19 meets the definition of severe acute respiratory syndromes as specified by Presidential Executive Order 13674 (issued July 31, 2014), thus making it a Class A Inadmissible Condition.”

The new requirements were activated on July 25th as stated:

"Effective July 25, 2022, the lower age limit for the COVID-19 vaccine requirement is 6 months of age. Any applicant 6 months through 4 years of age who presents for a medical examination on or after this date will be subject to this requirement. See below for additional details. This is in addition to older applicants who are already subject to these requirements."

“If an applicant refuses one or more doses of a COVID-19 vaccine series that is medically appropriate for the applicant, it should be documented that the vaccine requirements are not complete and that the applicant refuses vaccination. This applicant is Class A and is inadmissible to the United States."

The government apparently carved out a possible exemption for adoptees requests.

Who does this rule apply to?

Any “Applicants” that are defined as “people applying for immigrant or refugee status, as well as non-immigrants (NIVs) who are required to have an overseas medical examination, are medically screened days or weeks prior to travel to the United States (US).

Importantly, the CDC elaborates that “a negative screening for COVID-19 at the time of medical evaluation does not guarantee the applicant will not have COVID-19 at the time of immigration to the United States.”

Assumption: Vaccination Controls Spread of COVID

Underlying this Biden administration policy is the explicit assumption that vaccination becomes a keyway to control the spread of SARS-CoV-2, along with other means including “strategic testing” and “Routine infection control practices.”

Yet it’s well known that with ongoing mutation the current COVID-19 vaccines don’t stop the transmission of COVID-19, although they have been shown to reduce serious infection and hospitalization. Especially earlier on with the Wuhan, and other strains that were closer to the first “Wild Type” strain of SARS-CoV-2.

But even the protection against more serious disease has strained with Omicron. Of course, the FDA and CDC just gave both Pfizer-BioNTech and Moderna the greenlight for their BA.5 bivalent products less human data—Biden’s health authorities have determined that the urgency of the pandemic necessitates the accelerated delivery of the countermeasures to the population.

60% of UK companies to close as energy prices soar

Citing a poll conducted by MakeUK, a lobby group for British factories, Bloomberg reported on Saturday that approximately 60% of factories in the UK are at extreme risk of shutting down as energy costs across the country continue to skyrocket, with electricity bills surging by more than 100% over the past year.

MakeUK commented: “The current crisis is leaving businesses facing a stark choice,” adding: “Cut production or shut up shop altogether if help does not come soon.”

UK officials and authorities have been facing immense pressure for the past year as a result of the gas crisis which led to the need to tackle the ensuing energy crisis, with multiple efforts of support measures to help consumers and businesses deal with the rapidly surging costs.

With inflation at a 40-year high, wages are being stretched as price rises erode the value of the pound in their pocket. The UK has especially witnessed a series of walkouts in the last months of rail workers due to poor job security and low wages.

According to a purchasing managers’ index published by S&P Global, the country’s factory sector is already in a declining pattern, while MakeUK’s survey shows that 13% of factories have diminished their operating hours or are avoiding peak periods, with 7% halting production for longer periods.

An NHS (National Health Services) chief has warned that soaring energy costs will kill more than 10,000 people this winter; a situation the NHS Confederation referred to as a "humanitarian crisis". The UK Britain announced last week a vast 80% hike in electricity and gas bills, in a dramatic worsening of the cost-of-living crisis before winter as the UK awaits a new leader.

Germany issues nearly €65 bln relief to deal with winter energy crisis

The German government approved Sunday a $64.7 billion relief package, which includes continued cheaper public transport and tax breaks for energy-reliant companies, as they have been affected the most by the biggest surge in prices.

According to the Federal Statistical Office, Germany's inflation rose to almost 8% in August after declining slightly in the months of June and July.

The consecutive sanctions against Moscow prompted a race against the clock to diminish Germany's reliance on Russian gas before winter. Groceries and food are other sectors experiencing the aftermath of soaring inflation which saw prices surge 12% in June before reaching 16.6% in August.

In a press release after talks on Sunday, chancellor Olaf Scholz said Germany would give €1.5 billion toward public transport discounts after the country's monthly €9 travel ticket offer expired at the end of August, adding that windfall taxes would likely be assessed on energy companies to lower the price of gas, oil, and coal for consumers.

Scholz also reassured the matter of Germany's energy supply ahead of the winter after Russia recently stopped gas supplies to Europe through the Nord Stream 1 pipeline, commenting that Germany made "timely decisions" to avoid shortages in winter, such as filling gas storage facilities and restarting coal power plants. "We will get through this winter," he said.

13 EU nations have either ceased getting Russian gas entirely or are only receiving a portion of it due to the temporary blockage of the Nord Stream pipeline 1, according to TASS.

This is the third relief package by the German government this year. The two previous ones included a gasoline rebate that expired at the end of August, the €9 transportation ticket, and an energy price flat payment to workers.

Lapid: “Israel” leads campaign to prevent US from signing nuclear deal

Israeli Prime Minister Yair Lapid said “Israel” will continue to add pressure on the US not to rejoin the Iran nuclear deal, but not to the point of causing a diplomatic crisis.

“We are leading an intensive campaign meant to prevent the signing of a dangerous nuclear deal between Iran and world powers,” he said.

Lapid spoke the day before Mossad chief David Barnea was scheduled to leave for Washington to speak to the House and Senate Intelligence Committees about the “Iranian threat and the dangers of a nuclear deal”, and several days after the Israeli PM reportedly spoke with US President Joe Biden about the Iran deal.

On the other hand, Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi stressed Monday, "our peaceful nuclear capability is our right, and no one can obstruct Iran from preserving this right," adding that "the Zionist entity never wanted it [Iran] to obtain the technology, but it got it against their will."

He stressed that "all the Zionist entity's threats and measures will be helpless in stopping our path, and the entity is aware that it is unable to confront us; its threats reflect its fear," advising "Israel" not to launch any aggression because it "may no longer exist [as a result]."

It is worth noting that Iran has responded to the "final" text submitted by the European Union regarding the nuclear deal last week, and the parties have been studying it.

The Israeli occupation exerted strained efforts to sway the US from an agreement to return to the landmark 2015 deal with Tehran, yet it is attempting not to overplay its hand in order to avoid straining relations with the Biden administration the way Netanyahu did with the Obama administration at the time of signing of the first nuclear deal.

Microsoft founder Bill Gates and the Serum Institute of India were issued notices by the Bombay High Court on Friday after a petition in the court alleged that a woman died from the "side effects of Covishield vaccine".

The Bombay High Court on Friday issued notices and sought responses from the Serum Institute of India (SII) and Microsoft founder Bill Gates in a plea filed by Dilip Lunawat who alleged that his daughter died due to the side effects of Covishield. The petitioner demanded Rs 1000 crores as compensation for his loss.

In 2020, the Serum Institute of India entered into a partnership with the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, to speed up the process of manufacturing and delivery of up to 100 million doses of Covidshield vaccines for India and other third world countries.

Other respondents in the petition include the Union of India, Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, Drug Controller General of India, Dr VG Somani, Drug Controller General and Dr Randeep Guleria, Director of AIIMS.

Dilip Lunawat, a resident of Aurangabad, told the court that his daughter was a doctor and senior lecturer at the SMBT dental college and hospital at Dhamangaon. He said his daughter was compelled to take the vaccine after all the health workers at the institute were asked to get it.

He said his daughter was assured that the vaccines were completely safe and had no risk or threats to her body. In the plea, Lunawat said Dr Somani and Guleria had given several interviews and assured the people that the vaccines were safe.

He also attached his daughter’s vaccine certificate from January 28, 2021. She died on March 1, 2021, due to the “side effects of the Covishield vaccine,” said the petition. The plea added that this was reflected in the central government’s own Adverse Events Following Immunisation (AEFI) report on October 2, 2021.

Dilip Lunawat said he wanted to give justice to his daughter and also save the lives “of many more people who are likely to be murdered due to such unlawful activities of the respondent authorities.”

Something strange is going on with Gina Carano’s Twitter account. Namely, as of the present (September 4), it’s not there. The account was active as recently as August 27th. The question is whether Carano deleted her account or Twitter deleted it for her. Usually, when Twitter pulls the plug it suspends the account, such as what it did to President Trump. Carano’s account “no longer exists,” which in Twitter talk means the user deleted it him or herself. This is possible, but this seems unlikely given how Carano freely and frequently used her account to publicize both her conservative views and different acting endeavors

Superyacht 007 Sinks After Running Aground in Greece

We can now add another incident to that ever-growing list: 007, a superyacht delivered by Aegean Yachts in 2006, has sunk after running aground off the coast of Greece. It happened on Friday night (September 2), with reports in the local media saying that the captain hit rocks under the surface of the water.

The ship is now almost completely submerged in Kolona Bay in Kythnos, in the Cyclades island chain in Greece, only some 15 meters (49.2 feet) from the beach. The Greek Coast Guard has confirmed the incident but, for the time being, it can’t speak on the circumstances surrounding it – and for very good reason, since an investigation into the cause is still underway.

The Israeli Knesset is faced with a deep divide that has become a greater risk to its existence as Moshe Yaalon argued on August 27 when he said that “Israel’s” greatest existential threat comes from internal strife.

Avigdor Lieberman, current Finance Minister, has condescendingly attacked former PM Benjamin Netanyahu, also known as the leader of the opposition, during a government meeting that quickly turned the Knesset into a political circus.

Before entering the government meeting, Israel Hayom reported that what appeared to be a very upset Finance Minister said that "Netanyahu knows that what separates him from the government in Israel… He is trying to forget the letters he received from the Miron Committee - and all his efforts are directed against me,” adding that his bloc will do everything possible to ensure that the Likud does not cross the 59 thresholds at the polls in the upcoming elections.

Once inside the meeting, Lieberman redirects his speech toward Netanyahu’s Likud, as Israeli media reported, and said that “He is the scum of the human race, he has no red lines."

To which, Israel Hayom reported, the Likud responded "Lieberman is inciting the Nationalists under pressure. The man who suggested throwing the ultra-Orthodox into the landfill is now calling Netanyahu derogatory names as the last of the gangsters. Let's hope he doesn't offer anyone $100,000 to eliminate Netanyahu,” adding that "Lieberman can stop hallucinating, Likud and former Prime Minister Netanyahu have nothing to do with the disturbing allegations published against him in recent days."

MK Moshe Gafni, the chairman of Torah Judaism, also had a response to Lieberman’s accusations of Netanyahu and was quoted by Israel Hayom saying “Lieberman has revealed his true face, the issue is not a concern for the citizens of Israel or their economy, but hatred of Netanyahu. The man has completely lost it."

Lapid and the Iranian nuclear deal

Israeli Prime Minister Yair Lapid said, at the start of the government meeting, that “Israel” will continue to add pressure on the US not to rejoin the Iran nuclear deal, but not to the point of causing a diplomatic crisis.

“We are leading an intensive campaign meant to prevent the signing of a dangerous nuclear deal between Iran and world powers,” he said.

Lapid spoke the day before Mossad chief David Barnea was scheduled to leave for Washington to speak to the House and Senate Intelligence Committees about the “Iranian threat and the dangers of a nuclear deal”, and several days after the Israeli PM reportedly spoke with US President Joe Biden about the Iran deal.

“The correct policy is the one that we have been leading in the past year: To continue the pressure, without causing a rupture, to present credible intelligence, to be part of the process without destroying the special relationship with the US,” Lapid added.

“The reservations we presented to the US government were taken into account,” Lapid stressed.

Nevertheless, Washington has not released a statement regarding Lapid's notes nor did it promise any guarantees in its upcoming dealing with the JCPOA revival.

Ex-Chiefs also comment on Netanyahu and the Iran nuclear deal

Five former chiefs of staff of the IOF, according to The Times of "Israel", Ehud Barak, Moshe Yaalon, Gabi Ashkenazi, Benny Gantz, and Gadi Eisenkot, argued in a rare joint interview during the inauguration of a library that the disintegration of Israeli internal social cohesion poses a threat to “Israel” greater than Iran turning into a nuclear threshold state.

When the interviewer questioned the five ex-chiefs about Netanyahu being the "elephant in the room" and that every one of them has been avoiding all mention of him and is actively going to vote against him in the upcoming elections, Barak said, “I suggest that in a conversation about Ben-Gurion, we don’t also talk about Netanyahu. It diminishes the subject of the conversation.”

Ashkenazi voiced his agreement with Barak and Yaalon and said, “I would add that also the heads of the Shin Bet and Mossad, except for one, won’t (vote for him) either.”

It is worth noting that the divide over the Iran nuclear deal runs roughly between Israeli officials, becoming more salient as the US pushes for the deal’s revival.

This dispute has a direct impact today on escalating internal divisions which threaten the occupation’s national security.

Gantz chooses Herzi Halevi as new Israeli military chief of staff

Israeli media reported that Israeli security minister Benny Gantz decided to appoint Deputy Chief of Staff Herzi Halevi as chief of staff, after the end of Aviv Kochavi's term next year.

In mid-August, Israeli media agencies quoted former Israeli Prime Minister Naftali Bennett as saying that "It is irresponsible not to appoint a chief of staff while Israel is in a sensitive security situation," referring to the Hezbollah and the Karish field, the battles in Syria, and "Breaking Dawn" offensive in Gaza.

The security system of the occupation was preparing to choose a successor to Kochavi, who will likely be replaced at the beginning of next year and whose position was granted by the Bennett-Lapid government as soon as it was formed last year.

Israeli media said that Kochavi is deeply disappointed, as he was unable to present a single victory that would qualify him to continue in the path of politics after the end of his military career.

Three military names had emerged as the most likely to occupy the position of the Chief of Staff prior to the decision to appoint Major General Herzi Halevi: General Herzi Halevi, General Eyal Zamir, and General Yoel Strick.

Halevi is currently the deputy chief of staff and has previously held several positions, such as the head of the Military Intelligence Directorate "Aman," the Commanding Officer of the IOF Southern Command, and the commander of the Galilee Division.

Halevi believes that dealing with Gaza is based on the principle that "the more the Gazans strengthen their military capabilities, the more force we will have to exert to take Gaza backward."
