The pope is hoping to renew the Vatican's secretive accord with China.

This according to an exclusive interview Francis gave to Reuters on Saturday.

In tonight's In-Depth Report, Church Militant's Dr. William Mahoney looks at the pope's ongoing betrayal of faithful Catholics in China.

Cdl. Joseph Zen: "They have sold our Church."

Hong Kong's Cdl. Joseph Zen lamented the clandestine Vatican–China accord, which was first established in 2018 as a provisional agreement between the Holy See and the Chinese Communist Party (or "CCP").

Yet despite the disastrous results of that deal, Francis declared in Saturday's interview, "The agreement is moving well, and I hope that in October it can be renewed."

Cdl. Zen: "Now, we are in a desperate situation. Humanly speaking, the Church is going to disappear ― the real Church."

The accord was renewed in 2020 and will likely be renewed soon for a third time.

In China, there are, in effect, two churches: those faithful to Rome, known as the "underground church," and those approved by the CCP, known as the so-called official church.

And though the Vatican's ostensible reason for the secret accord is to ease tensions between Beijing and Rome, the actual results include ever-increasing persecution of the underground church.

Cdl. Zen: "When the people in [sic] the underground, they are strong ― they are peaceful, but they are strong ― the government can tolerate [it]. Now, no more because the Vatican agreed to hand everything into their hands. So terrible things happen now."

Cardinal Zen is a staunch defender of the Catholic faith and Hong Kong's autonomy.

These combined factors have made him a public enemy of the CCP, which is trying to cancel him communist-style.

Pro-Beijing newspaper Ta Kung Pao targeted Cdl. Zen in January with a hit piece titled "Lawless Zen Abuses His Priesthood to Disrupt Hong Kong."

The Chinese prelate was also arrested recently, ostensibly for violating the CCP's national security law.

Naturally, Cdl. Zen pleaded not guilty. An upcoming trial was set for Sept. 19.

Meanwhile, reports indicate the CCP has been sending the Vatican money ― perhaps billions ― every year since Francis became pope in 2013.

Whether the pope's enthusiasm for the secret Vatican–China accord stems from poor catechesis, ideology, filthy lucre or some mixture of these, it's difficult to reconcile his fervor for the pact with his purported love for the Chinese people, especially his own suffering sheep in the underground church.

The Vatican ties of Italy’s new Prime Minister Mario Draghi

Mario Draghi, an economist and retired banker, was sworn in as prime minister of Italy on Saturday, after the previous government coalition collapsed when a party pulled its support for then prime minister Giuseppe Conte.

As President Sergio Mattarella's pick to form a new government, Draghi was an unexpected choice. But he was able to win enough support to form a new coalition, appointing a mix of technocrats and politicians to his cabinet.

Many in Italy hope that the 73-year-old Draghi, president of the European Central Bank from 2011 to 2019, can save the country's faltering economy. He is credited with saving the failing euro during the eurozone crisis, earning him the nickname "Super Mario."

Pope Francis signaled his approval for the economist in July 2020, when he named him as one of 26 ordinary academicians of the Pontifical Academy of Social Sciences, which promotes the study of economic and political sciences to aid the development of the Church's social doctrine.

But Draghi, who has had private audiences and phone calls with Pope Francis, has been seen with favor from inside the Vatican for much longer.

The former banker, who described himself in 2015 as a"liberal socialist",was featured in a November 2019 article in the Jesuit periodical La Civiltà Cattolica, which is approved by the Secretariat of State and the Holy See before publication.

The article had high praise for Draghi, saying that he "emerges as a policymaker of the highest stature: to gratitude is added the hope that his way of proceeding without rhetoric, with in-depth analysis and vision, will be adopted in broader areas of both European and Italian politics."

Fr. Antonio Spadaro, S.J., La Civiltà Cattolica's editor-in-chief, told the Italian news agency AdnKronos in early February, before Draghi was confirmed as prime minister, that "the figure of Draghi was the protagonist of one of the most complex phases in the recent history of Europe."

Spadaro, seen to be close to Pope Francis, said that while a technocratic government was not ideal for Italy, it "could be a parenthesis intended as a moment of reflection" for the country before it returns to a political government.

Draghi's connections to theJesuitsbegin from childhood. He attended a Jesuit-run school in Rome, the Massimiliano Massimo Institute, from fourth grade through the third year of high school, an experience for which he has expressed "profound gratitude."

In a 2010 interview with Vatican Radio, he recalled "the dedication of the Jesuit fathers" and the moral standards that the school imparted.

"A message that expressed that things had to be done to the best of one's ability, that honesty was important, but above all that we were all special in some way. Not so much because we went to Massimo but because[we were] special as human persons," he said.

While serving as president of the Bank of Italy in 2009, Draghi wrote an op-ed for the Vatican newspaper L'Osservatore Romano, in which he commented on Pope Benedict XVI's social encyclical "Caritas in Veritate."

The economic crisis "confirms the need for a relationship between ethics and economics," Draghi noted in the more than 1,000-word article. "Every economic decision has moral consequences. This is even more true in the era of globalization…"

"According to the Church's social doctrine, if the autonomy of economic discipline implies indifference to ethics, man is pushed to abuse the economic instrument," he said. "If it is no longer a means for achieving the ultimate goal the common good profit risks generating poverty."

The economist was also a featured speaker at the August 2020 Rimini Meeting, an annual gathering in Italy organized by the Catholic movement Communion and Liberation.

In 2019, he was given an honorary degree from the Catholic University of the Sacred Heart in Milan.

At the awarding ceremony, university rector Franco Anelli called Draghi "the protagonist of an economy 'in action,' not just 'in the books.'"

And in his own speech, Draghi told students of the university that he hoped they would "put their skills to public service."

"There will be mistakes and retreats because the world is complex," he said. "However, I hope that you will be comforted by the fact that in history, decisions based on knowledge, courage, and humility have always shown their quality."

George Pell: father of former choirboy files civil claim against cardinal and Catholic church

Claim brought against Pell and Catholic Archdiocese of Melbourne alleges the boy was sexually assaulted by Pell

Cardinal George Pell was convicted of five charges of sexual abuse in 2018, but the convictions were quashed by Australia’s high court in April 2020.

A civil claim against Cardinal George Pell and the Catholic Archdiocese of Melbourne will be heard in the Victorian supreme court on Thursday.

The Age reported that the case had been filed by the father of a boy who was allegedly sexually assaulted by Pell.

Pell has always maintained his innocence in the matter. He faced trial over the allegation in 2018 and was convicted but the high court later overturned the verdict and cleared the cardinal.

More details are expected to emerge at today’s directions hearing.

In December 2018, a Melbourne jury unanimously convicted Pell on five charges relating to two complainants.

One of the complainants said Pell sexually assaulted him and another 13-year-old boy in the priest’s sacristy some time in December 1996, after presiding over Sunday solemn mass at St Patrick’s Cathedral.

The second complainant died of an accidental overdose in 2014, and it is reportedly his father who has made the civil claim.

The claim was filed in 2020 by Shine Lawyers, who have previously represented the father.

In April 2020, the high court ordered Pell to be released from prison and his convictions were quashed.

It found that the jury, acting rationally on the whole of the evidence, ought to have entertained a doubt as to Pell’s guilt with respect to each of the offences for which he was convicted.

Father Tim Stier spent 17 years protesting the Catholic Church’s handling of clerical child abuse before they defrocked him.

A California priest who was defrocked in March after protesting the Catholic Church over its record on abuse says he was removed from the priesthood simply for being too critical.

“It hit me harder than I’d expected,” former Father Tim Stier, 73, told the Mercury News after his removal by the Vatican was disclosed last week. “I felt sad and angry. If I’d been raping kids, I wouldn’t be thrown out of the club.”

The former priest at the Corpus Christi Parish in Fremont, California, has been holding vigil for abuse survivors and the church’s marginalized believers since 2005, according to his blog. He was shaken after the 2002 bombshell report on clerical sex abuse and its cover up at the Boston diocese was exposed, on which the Oscar winning movie Spotlight is based, he said on his blog.

He has pushed for what he calls “structural reform” which he says means, “Include the Excluded: Women, Gay Persons, Abuse Survivors.”

In 2013, the Vatican opened an investigation into his protests and refusal to accept assignments at various parishes around the country after a local bishop lodged a complaint. At the time, he told National Catholic Reporter that the church needed to do more. He started releasing names of accused predator priests, and was asked by the California diocese to stop.

“Releasing the names of abusers not only tells people, especially survivors, that the church is serious, but it also can help those who have not yet come forward to have the courage to do so,” Stier told National Catholic Reporter at the time.

He told the Mercury News that he expected the Vatican to “come after his collar,” which finally happened earlier this year. Defrocking a priest removes him permanently from the priesthood and has happened to sexual abusers only a handful of times, including the 2019 removal of Theodore McCarrick after decades of credible allegations.

Stier’s former diocese of Oakland issued a simple statement on Friday, wishing “Mr. Stier all the best in this new chapter of his life.”

The former priest is a rare example of a vocal prelate condemning the coverup of clerical sexual abuse of children that has stained the Roman Catholic Church across the world. While California has not seen the same number of abuse cases reported as other states, like the 2018 Pennsylvania grand jury report that found 300 predatory priests raped and abused more than 1,000 young children over decades, it is not without problems.

Stier has worked with survivor groups including the Survivors Network of Those Abused by Priests known as SNAP, to continue drawing attention to ongoing cases of abuse.

In his farewell letter published on Bishop Accountability, which keeps a database of abuse allegations, Stier wrote, “Dear No-Longer-Fellow Priests, This will likely be my farewell letter to most of you, which may be glad tidings to those of you who do not enjoy hearing from me.” He then went on to disclose allegations of both abuse and cover-ups he hopes will be investigated.

Pope calls abuse trip to Canada a ‘penitential pilgrimage’

Pope Francis said Sunday that a visit to Canada, where he will meet indigenous survivors of abuse in residential schools run by the Catholic Church, was “a penitential pilgrimage.”

“Next Sunday, God willing, I will leave for Canada,” he said at the end of the Angelus prayer, in an apparent reference to a knee problem that forced him to postpone a trip to Africa last month.

The pontiff is expected to use his July 24-30 visit to Edmonton, Quebec and Iqaluit to repeat an apology he delivered to Canadian delegations visiting the Vatican in April.

He had “expressed my pain and solidarity for the damage they have suffered,” Francis told the crowd gathered in St. Peter’s Square on Sunday.

“And now I am about to make a penitential pilgrimage, which I hope, with the grace of God, will contribute to the path of healing and reconciliation already undertaken,” he said.

The trip to Canada is an important step in the 85-year-old’s efforts to address the global scandal of child sexual abuse by clergy and decades of cover-up.

Around 150,000 First Nations, Metis and Inuit children were enrolled from the late 19th century to the 1990s in 139 residential schools across Canada, as part of a government policy of forced assimilation.

They spent months or years isolated from their families, language, and culture, and many were physically and sexually abused by principals and teachers.

Thousands are believed to have died from disease, malnutrition or neglect. More than 1,300 unmarked graves have been discovered since May 2021 in schools.

There was no "Catholic" residential school system. Your suggestive headlines falsely imply that somehow catholics were in charge of that system.. Catholic schools were forced to comply to the Canadian law and thereby became subject to that Federal school system.

The Vatican’s Office of the Promoter of Justice used those powers to target millionaire Raffaele Mincione, a fund manager accused of cheating the Vatican amidst a roughly $350 million real estate venture.

The scandal centers on a massive Vatican investment in a former Harrod’s warehouse in London, which was set to be converted into luxury apartments.

Mincione is one of 10 people, including a cardinal, embroiled in the controversy, which first came to light in 2014. He has denied wrongdoing.

Last month, prosecutors questioned Mincione about his management of a fund that owned the London property.

In April 2021, the pope amended Vatican law, permitting religious leaders like cardinals and bishops to stand trial before the Vatican’s civilian-led courts, the Telegraph reported.

Days later Pope Francis allegedly ordered “the adoption of technological tools suitable for intercepting fixed and mobile devices, as well as any other communication, including electronic ones,” according to the leaked documents. “These powers may be exercised against subjects whose communication activities are considered useful for carrying out the investigations.”

Weeks later, Mincione’s phones and computer were seized by Vatican authorities and Italian police at a hotel in Rome, while the financier was vacationing, according to the report. His Italian lawyer claims he was put under surveillance.
