Soros-Backed Challenger Ousts Incumbent Prosecutor in Maine Race

In the race to become the top prosecutor in Maine’s largest county, George Soros-backed candidate Jacqueline Sartoris ousted incumbent Jonathan Sahrbeck.

With 94 percent of precincts counted, Sartoris won with 15,209 votes, or 65 percent, compared to Sahrbeck’s 8,069 votes in the June 14 Democratic primary, according to local station WMTM.

Since there were the only two candidates running in the race, Sartoris is expected to be elected as Cumberland County’s next district attorney in November.

In the month before the primary, a George Soros-backed super PAC spent nearly $384,000 opposing Sahrbeck and supporting Sartoris, a whopping amount almost five times the combined total spent by both candidates and unheard of in local prosecutor races.

Though both candidates are registered Democrats, they hold different views on top priorities.

Sahrbeck, a career prosecutor, said most crimes in the county are fueled by either drug addiction or mental health, so he wanted to leverage the criminal justice system in a way to get more people into court-ordered treatment programs, according to a virtual candidate forum hosted by Portland Center for Restorative Justice.

As for Sartoris, an environmental-lawyer-turned prosecutor, a district attorney’s top job is to set prosecution policies.

Her vision is to reduce jail and prison populations through office-wide policies that set when to charge crimes, what charges to file, and how to resolve the charges, according to the same forum.

“People are mostly unaware that prosecutors have an incredible amount of power in the system. We, in fact, have the greatest power in the criminal justice system,” she said at the forum.

In contrast, Sahrbeck disagrees that the top prosecutor is a “policy position.”

He said prosecutors should judge every case on its own merits (such as the crime committed, the history of the offender, and the victim,) and make a prosecutorial decision that’s best in the interest of justice, which includes the interests of offenders, victims, and the broader community, according to the candidate forum.

Sahrbeck raised $49,177 in his reelection bid, twice as much as Sartoris, according to the campaign finance data published by Maine Ethics Commission.

However, about a month before the primary George Soros-backed Democracy PAC II poured $300,000 into the newly formed Maine Justice and Public Safety PAC. The latter ended up spending $383,945 on mailers and digital ads opposing Sahrbeck and supporting Sartoris, according to data by Maine Ethics Commission.

Soros is the principal donor to the Democracy PAC II in this election cycle, contributing $125 million, or 99 percent of total receipts, according to finance data published by Federal Election Commission.

Super PACs like Maine Justice and Public Safety can raise and spend unlimited money on communications opposing or supporting candidates under the protection of free speech. But they cannot communicate directly with candidates and must follow certain finance disclosure rules.

For more than two decades, Republican Stephanie Anderson held the top prosecutor job in Cumberland County, which includes Maine’s largest city Portland.

After Anderson announced her retirement in 2018, Sahrbeck, a Republican-turned Independent candidate at the time, was to face Jon Gale, a Democrat, in the general election.

However, just a week before the election, Gale dropped out of the race over sexual misconduct allegations.

As a result, Sahrbeck was elected even though he only got 26.7 percent of the votes.

Last September, Sahrbeck changed his party registration again, this time to Democrat. He said his record as a district attorney reflects the Democratic values of addressing root causes of crime, according to the above candidate forum.

While in office, Sahrbeck created a diversion program, a veterans treatment court, and a community network called the Cumberland County Coalition on Substance Use Prevention.

Major General of the Armed Forces of Ukraine Dmitry Marchenko stated that Ukraine should target the Kerch Strait Bridge connecting Crimea to the Russian mainland as soon as it receives necessary weapons from the West.

In an interview with US state-run media Crimea Realities (Krym.Realii), he tersely said: “The Kerch Bridge is absolutely our number one target.”

“As the main way of sending in reserves, we just have to cut it off. As soon as that road is cut off, they will start to panic. And believe me, those who flew Russian flags in Simferopol will quickly get Ukrainian flags and start flying them instead,” he added.

It is also worth noting that the Pentagon’s policy chief, on Tuesday, revealed that the US will provide guided missiles with a range of 70 kilometers.

Ukraine reportedly provided Washington with "assurances that they will not use these systems against targets on Russian territory," according to US Secretary of State Antony Blinken earlier this month.

However, the US refuses to recognize Crimea as Russian territory, dubbing the peninsula, which overwhelmingly voted to rejoin Russia in March 2014, "illegally annexed."

It was unclear what weapons Marchenko hoped to use against the bridge, which the Kiev government has previously threatened to attack. While the bridge was the only way to reach Crimea from the Russian mainland for several years, the entire Black Sea coast from Kherson to Mariupol is now under Russian and Donbass republics' control.

Sanaa government: Violation of truce gives right to review position

Deputy Foreign Minister in the Sanaa government, Hussein Al-Ezzi, announced Thursday that his government had accepted the extension of the armistice in Yemen based on "serious promises" to increase the number of flights and to make progress on the issue of salaries.

Al-Ezzi said in a Tweet that the number of flights before the extension of the armistice has not been met.

The US State Department is in contact with Ukrainian authorities about two American fighters who were allegedly captured by Russian forces in Ukraine on Wednesday, according to Fox News.

The media reported that Russian forces captured US citizens Alexander Drueke, 39, and Andy Huynh, 27, earlier in the day.

The US government is closely monitoring the situation and is in contact with Ukrainian authorities, but due to privacy concerns, the US government has no further comment, according to the report.

The official urged US citizens to avoid traveling to Ukraine, particularly for the purpose of fighting Russian and allied forces during Russia's special military operation there.

Macron, Scholz, Draghi visit Ukraine to meet with Zelensky

European leaders from France, Germany, and Italy traveled by train to Kiev Wednesday overnight and arrived on Thursday morning. French President Emmanuel Macron, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz, and Italy’s PM Mario Draghi sought to express and validate their support for Ukraine.

The three leaders of the top EU economies arrived in Kiev for the first time since the Russian special military operation in Ukraine began. Scholz and Macron, the leaders of the largest economies, have been criticized for not visiting Ukraine yet.

Ukrainian president Volodymyr Zelensky will discuss with the three leaders sensitive topics including Ukraine’s bid to join the EU.

Earlier on Wednesday, Macron visited a NATO base in Romania where approximately 500 French troops are deployed. During his visit, the French President stated that “we are at a time when we, the European Union, need to send clear political signals to Ukraine and the Ukrainian people in a context where they have been resisting heroically for several months.”

Despite their different perspectives, all three countries are in support of Ukraine joining the EU. A response to the candidacy of Ukraine to the EU is expected to unravel during the European summit on 23-24 June. If successful, this will start a negotiation process to become a bona fide member state, which may take several years.

France's Europe minister, Clement Beaune, reportedly said Ukraine's EU membership was "15 or 20 years" away from being realized.

"We have to be honest. If you say Ukraine is going to join the EU in six months, or a year or two, you're lying," Beaune said, speaking to a local radio station. "It's probably in 15 or 20 years, it takes a long time."

French President Emmanuel Macron had earlier voiced his aspiration to create a European political community to ensure Ukraine could join the 27-nation bloc later on. However, Zelensky dismissed the move, asking to join the European Union.

The European Commission's chief, Ursula von der Leyen, said Sunday that once the war in Ukraine is over, the EU will support Ukraine's efforts to rebuild.

Von der Leyen said in an interview on CNN that Kiev belonged in Europe, and the EU will support Ukraine's bid for membership, adding that its accession to the Union might be viewed as an extraordinary case.

Usually, it takes a country wishing to join the EU years in order to cross obstacles preventing its accession, von der Leyen admitted. She had traveled on Friday to meet Volodymyr Zelensky a membership questionnaire in order to launch the process of Ukraine's accession.

Von der Leyen promised Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky that Ukraine's accession to the European Union would be expedited.

On the other hand, US Defense Department spokesperson John Kirby said, on the same day, that the US had claimed to discourage Americans from becoming boots on the ground in Ukraine.

US involvement in Ukraine

The New York Times (NYT), citing senior US officials, claimed that Washington provided Kiev with intelligence that led to the death of high-ranking Russian officers whose number is not specified.

The newspaper's sources declined to specify how many Russian generals had been killed with US assistance.

But Ukrainian officials claim they have killed 12 Russian generals on the front lines, "a number that has astonished military analysts," the NYT said, adding that the US is said to prohibit itself from providing intelligence on Russia's "most senior" military leaders to Kiev.

According to the newspaper, the US and other NATO allies are secretly providing real-time battlefield intelligence to Ukraine.

That intelligence in particular includes anticipated Russian troop movements after the start of the second phase of the war in Ukraine.

Furthermore, Republican senator Rand Paul, in May, said that Congress needs to borrow money from China to send aid to Ukraine, just a day before the US Senate voted by majority to send $40 billion in military and economic aid to Ukraine and its allies. According to Investopedia, the US owes China $1 trillion in debt.

"To borrow the money from China simply to send it to Ukraine makes no sense and makes us weaker not stronger," Paul said on the Senate floor regarding the aid package.

The topics of local military conflicts and illegal human organ trade always go hand in hand, since military actions are not just about solving geopolitical issues and commonplace profiting off the arms trafficking but also about illegal human organ trade. Organ buyer-ups and black-market transplant surgeons have long become ordinary elements of the military landscape just like mercenaries, New Eastern Outlook wrote at the end of March.

On 29 May 2022, the Russian Investigative Committee said it will look into allegations the Ukrainian Red Cross Society was involved in shady activities, including keeping records of children with “healthy organs” in the city of Mariupol.

Vladimir Taranenko claimed the office had medical records for over 1,000 children, but they marked their “healthy organs” instead of any medical conditions or procedures.

Taranenko is the head of the Donetsk-based civic organisation ‘Peoples Retinue,’ a volunteer movement that states one of its goals assisting is law enforcement in the Donetsk People’s Republic (“DPR”).

He also claimed that some of the reading materials discovered at the office were instructions on “how to use weapons, including in a format intended for children.”

A thorough and lengthy investigation would be required to verify or refute events or statements made over the past few decades which is beyond our capabilities. So, to give some idea of the history relating to organ harvesting in Ukraine, what follows are simply extracts from two sources namely, an article published by Frontier Post and another by New Eastern Outlook. There are, however, numerous resources available online.

More than 100,000 people are currently on the waiting list for organ transplants in the United States, most of whom are awaiting kidney transplants, according to data published on the statistical information portal Statista. It should be noted that there is a shortage of donor organs not only in the United States but also in many other countries and demand creates supply.

The main sources of organs for illicit trade are third world countries and hotspots. Many researchers note that Ukraine has become one of the main centres of black-market transplantation in recent years.

After the start of the Russian special operation to demilitarise Ukraine, the advancing Russian troops and the armies of the republics of Donbass discovered mass graves, which, presumably, contain the remains of people who were killed by members of the Ukrainian national battalions. Many of them likely became victims of black-market transplants.

In the 1990s the chief doctor of the Lviv regional clinical hospital Bogdan Fedak founded a crime ring selling children’s organs to foreign countries, mostly to the US. An investigation concluded that around 130 infants went missing in Lviv.

In 2007, Ukraine witnessed a scandal around the Israeli citizen Michael Zis who was accused of practising black-market transplant surgery. Zis was detained on 13 October 2007 in Donetsk on request from law-enforcement agencies.

The flourishing of illegal organ trafficking in Ukraine began to be discussed as early as 2014, when, after the start of the so-called anti-terrorist operation in the east of the country, reports of disappearances began to arrive en masse. At the same time, information began to appear about the activities of mobile hospitals in the country, the main activity of which was to extract donor organs with their subsequent shipment abroad. Their victims were both civilians and LDNR militia, and soldiers of the Armed Forces of Ukraine.
