The Insurrection Act of 1807 is a United States federal law[1] that empowers the president of the United States to deploy U.S. military and federalized National Guard troops within the United States in particular circumstances, such as to suppress civil disorder, insurrection, or rebellion.

Scholars of genocide are criticizing the dangerous use of the Holocaust to justify Israeli mass violence against Palestinians

resident Joe Biden began his remarks in Israel with this: “Hamas committed atrocities that recall the worst ravages of Isis, unleashing pure unadulterated evil upon the world. There is no rationalizing it, no excusing it. Period. The brutality we saw would have cut deep anywhere in the world, but it cuts deeper here in Israel. October 7, which was a … sacred Jewish holiday, became the deadliest day for the Jewish people since the Holocaust.

“It has brought to the surface painful memories and scars left by millennia of antisemitism and the genocide of the Jewish people. The world watched then, it knew, and the world did nothing.

“We will not stand by and do nothing again. Not today, not tomorrow, not ever.”

With this, Biden reinforced the rhetorical framework that the former Israeli prime minister Naftali Bennett expressed, in typically unashamed terms, in an interview on Sky News on 12 October: “We’re fighting Nazis.”

A powerful state, with powerful allies and a powerful army, engaged in a retaliatory attack against stateless Palestinians under Israeli-settler colonial rule, military occupation and siege, is thus portrayed as powerless Jews in a struggle against Nazis. This historical context in no way justifies or excuses the mass murder of 1,500 Israelis on 7 October, which constitutes a war crime and crimes against humanity. This was the single largest massacre of Jews since the Holocaust, which deeply shocked Jews and many others around the world. The context of the Hamas attack on Israelis, however, is completely different from the context of the attack on Jews during the Holocaust. And without the historical context of Israeli settler colonialism since the 1948 Nakba, we cannot explain how we got here, nor imagine different futures; Biden offered us, instead, the decontextualized image of “pure, unadulterated evil.”

This weaponization of Holocaust memory by Israeli politicians runs deep. In 1982, for instance, in the context of Israel’s attack on Lebanon, the Israeli PM, Menachem Begin, compared the Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat in Beirut to Adolf Hitler in his bunker in Berlin at the end of the war. Three decades later, in October 2015, Benjamin Netanyahu took this weaponization to new levels when he asserted in a speech to the World Zionist Congress in Jerusalem that the Palestinian grand mufti Haj Amin al-Husseini planted the idea to murder Jews in Hitler’s mind. And last Tuesday, Netanyahu described Hamas in a press conference, together with the German chancellor, Olaf Scholz, as the “new Nazis”.

The Israeli defense minister, Yoav Gallant said: “Gaza will not return to what it was before. We will eliminate everything.” Nissim Vaturi, a member of the Israeli parliament for the ruling Likud party, to take another example, called for “erasing the Gaza Strip from the face of the earth”. There are many other such expressions by Israeli politicians and senior army officers in the last few weeks. The fantasy of “fighting Nazis” drives such explicit language, because the image of Nazis is one of “pure, unadulterated evil”, which removes all laws and restrictions in the fight against it. Perpetrators of genocide always see their victims as evil and themselves as righteous. This is, indeed, how Nazis saw Jews.

Biden’s words constitute therefore a textbook use of the Holocaust not in order to stand with powerless people facing the prospect of genocidal violence, but to support and justify an extremely violent attack by a powerful state and, at the same time, distort this reality. But we see the reality in front of our eyes: since the start of Israeli mass violence on 7 October, the number of Palestinians killed in Gaza has surpassed 4,650, a third of them children, with more than 15,000 injured and over a million people displaced.

Israel has also escalated the violence against Palestinians under occupation in the West Bank, including the killing of more than 95 people and an intensification of expulsions, including the destruction of whole communities. Hamas wields no power in the West Bank, but the reality that we can all see means little for Israelis fighting, in their minds, Nazis.

We have seen this sort of use of Holocaust memory in another case of mass violence not too long ago. On 24 January 2020, the Russian president Vladimir Putin was invited to speak at the fifth World Holocaust Forum at Yad Vashem in Jerusalem, to mark 75 years to the liberation of Auschwitz by Soviet forces. In his speech, Putin presented a distorted history of the second world war and the Holocaust, including distorted maps, to fit a Russian narrative that erased the Nazi-Soviet alliance in the destruction of Poland in 1939 and presented Ukrainians, Latvians and Lithuanians primarily as Nazi collaborators.

Putin used precisely this weaponization of Holocaust history when he launched his assault on Ukraine in February last year, explaining it as a campaign of “denazification”. Explicit and unashamed, just like Bennett. Putin thus used the Holocaust to create a world turned upside down: Ukrainians facing a brutal and unprovoked Russian attack became Nazis.

The history of the Holocaust, however, does offer lessons for the current bloodshed.

For one, it reminds us to center the voices and perspectives of those facing state violence and genocide. And the most urgent thing that Palestinians in Gaza now need is a ceasefire and an end to the Israeli bombing campaign.

That is also what at least some of the Israeli survivors of the Hamas attack and family members of Israeli civilians killed or in captivity in Gaza want. A top priority now should be stopping the unfolding violence, saving lives, and the release of Israeli hostages together with hundreds of Palestinian civilians, including 160 children, detained by Israel unlawfully, without charges or trial.

The history of the Holocaust also points to the importance of accountability, even as post-Holocaust accountability remained limited. In the case of Israel’s assault on Gaza, accountability needs to begin from what is very clear: incitement to genocide, which is punishable under article 3 of the UN genocide convention, even when genocide does not follow. While the debate about genocide in Israel’s current assault on Gaza will undoubtedly continue for years, perhaps also in international courts, Israeli war crimes and violations of international humanitarian law are beyond dispute.

It will also be important then that Israeli perpetrators of war crimes and those responsible for violations of international humanitarian law in the many years of the siege on Gaza, including during this current assault, will stand trial. Palestinian leaders and Palestinians who perpetrated the mass atrocities on 7 October should also be held accountable. International courts and legal processes are important because they hold potential to become spaces, however limited, for survivors to tell their stories, assert their humanity, and demand truth and justice.

Indeed, no value related to the study of the Holocaust and its memory occupies a more central place perhaps than truth. No justice is possible, not in the short term and certainly not in the long term, without a truthful reckoning of how we got here. This means recognizing fully the long history of Israeli settler-colonial violence against Palestinians since the 1948 Nakba.

The world is indeed watching, as Biden said, and it knows, despite Biden’s use of the Holocaust to distort what is clearly in front of our eyes, as more than 800 scholars of international law, conflict studies, and Holocaust and Genocide Studies declared in a statement on 15 October: “We are compelled to sound the alarm about the possibility of the crime of genocide being perpetrated by Israeli forces against Palestinians in the Gaza Strip. We do not do so lightly, recognizing the weight of this crime, but the gravity of the current situation demands it.” Scholars whose work has shaped the field of Holocaust and genocide studies, such as Omer Bartov and Marion Kaplan, signed the statement.

This is significant. More and more Holocaust and genocide studies scholars are refusing to allow the continuation of the dangerous use of the Holocaust to distort the historical reality of the Holocaust and Israeli mass violence against Palestinians. This provides some hope in these dark days, as it supports the struggle for a different future, beyond the Israeli settler state, a future that should be based on equality, justice, freedom and dignity for all the people who live between the Jordan River and the Mediterranean Sea.

Russia warns Israel about attacks on Syria

Israeli jets have repeatedly targeted Syrian airports since October 7

Spreading conflict to other countries in the Middle East is “unacceptable,” Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said on Tuesday, discussing a spate of recent Israeli airstrikes with his Syrian counterpart.

Lavrov brought up the issue of Israeli airstrikes, “which have become more frequent against the backdrop of events around the Gaza Strip,” during a phone call with Syrian Foreign Minister Faisal Mekdad, the Russian Foreign Ministry said in a readout of the call.

Both ministers “emphasized the danger of attempts by external forces to turn the Middle East, in its current explosive situation, into an arena for settling geopolitical scores,” the readout added.

Mekdad phoned Lavrov to discuss the current situation in Gaza, as well as a number of bilateral issues and the progress in ending the war in Syria. While the 2011 attempt at armed “regime change” backed by the West and some regional powers ended in failure, the north and northeast of Syria are still outside the control of the government in Damascus.

Since the Hamas incursion from Gaza on October 7, Israel has bombed Syria at least three times, repeatedly shutting down the airports in Aleppo and Damascus. One of the attacks was acknowledged by an Israeli ambassador to Germany, who said it was intended to disrupt “weapons deliveries from Iran.”

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu once acknowledged that there have been “hundreds” of strikes into Syria over the past decade. On the rare occasion when Israel Defense Forces (IDF) comment on the attacks, they claim to have acted in pre-emptive self-defense operations against Iran, accusing Tehran of supplying the Hezbollah militants. Damascus has repeatedly protested the raids as a violation of Syrian sovereignty, to no avail.

Lavrov and Mekdad agreed on the need for an “immediate end to the bloodshed” in Gaza and a solution to all the humanitarian problems created by the fighting.

Russia has condemned the Hamas attack but called Israel’s response against Gaza an unacceptable form of “collective punishment” against innocent civilians. Moscow has called for a peace settlement between Israel and the Palestinians through the creation and recognition of an independent Palestinian state.

China's scathing criticisms of Israel's military campaign in Gaza, where the death toll has surpassed 8,500 mostly civilians, have grown of late - but this week escalated to a new precedent.

The Wall Street Journal has confirmed internet users' deepening suspicions that the country of Israel has disappeared from several online maps after the 'mistake' began to gain increased attention. "Internet users in China are expressing bewilderment that the name Israel doesn’t appear on leading online digital maps from Baidu and Alibaba, an ambiguity that matches Beijing’s vague diplomacy in the region and contrasts with its attentiveness to maps generally," WSJ writes Tuesday. But some pundits have said the claim is misleading, stressing that many Chinese maps don't label "disputed areas" by default.

The internationally recognized borders of the Israeli state are also missing. The report says that Israel may have gone 'missing' on the popular maps since the start of the Oct.7 conflict and Israel's subsequent bombing campaign on Gaza.

But as WSJ also points out, neither major Chinese company has publicly acknowledged the missing country information.

The same is true with online maps produced by Alibaba’s Amap, where even small nations like Luxembourg are clearly marked. Neither company responded to questions on Monday. It is unclear whether the development is new, though it has been discussed by Chinese internet users since war broke out.

China’s government has over the years cried foul and levied fines over maps published elsewhere online, such as on hotel websites, for failing to strictly adhere to Beijing’s territorial claims, like leaving off a nine-dotted line stretching around the South China Sea that isn’t internationally recognized.

Indeed this could be a subtle game of 'retaliation' for when Western sources publish maps which Beijing vehemently disagrees with, such as depicting Taiwan as independent from the Chinese mainland.

Additionally, China has increasingly aligned its foreign policy with the Global South in recent months, and the Gaza crisis is a further demonstration of this trend.

In statements from the foreign ministry, Chinese officials have consistently highlighted Israel's bombing of Gazan civilians, instead of focusing on denunciations of the Oct.7 terror attack by Hamas (as the US and much of the West has done). "Every country has the right to self-defense, but every country should abide by international humanitarian law and protect the safety of civilians," FM Wang Yi told his Israeli counterpart Eli Cohen a week ago.

The director of the UN’s human rights office (OHCHR) in New York, Craig Mokhiber, has resigned from his post, citing the body’s failure to properly address the Israel-Palestine crisis. Instead of doing its job, the UN has “surrendered to the power of the US” and given in to the “Israeli lobby,” while the “European, ethno-nationalist, settler colonial project in Palestine has entered its final phase,” the senior official argued.

“Once again, we are seeing a genocide unfolding before our eyes, and the Organization that we serve appears powerless to stop it,” Mokhiber said in a letter to UN High Commissioner on Human Rights Volker Turk, published on Tuesday.

The official squarely described the ongoing Israeli action in the Gaza Strip as “genocide,” acknowledging that this word “has often been subject to political abuse.”

“But the current wholesale slaughter of the Palestinian people, rooted in an ethno-nationalist settler colonial ideology … leaves no room for doubt or debate,” Mokhiber argued.

This is a text-book case of genocide. The European, ethno-nationalist, settler colonial project in Palestine has entered its final phase, toward the expedited destruction of the last remnants of indigenous Palestinian life in Palestine.

The governments of the US, the UK, and “much of Europe are wholly complicit in the horrific assault,” not only through a mere failure to fulfill their international obligations but by “actively arming the assault, providing economic and intelligence support, and giving political and diplomatic cover for Israel’s atrocities,” Mokhiber stated. The “cover” is further reinforced by “Western corporate media, increasingly captured and state-adjacent,” which has been “continuously dehumanizing Palestinians to facilitate the genocide, and broadcasting propaganda for war and advocacy of national, racial, or religious hatred,” he stressed.

Artificial intelligence (AI) could pave the way for a vaccine against gonorrhea, researchers say.

The sexually transmitted disease is raising concerns among doctors because it is resistant to nearly all antibiotics, with experts fearing that if a super-strain gains a foothold in the US they may be left unable to treat it.

But researchers from Massachusetts and Denmark say they have used AI harnessing technology similar to facial recognition to detect two antigens on gonorrhea that could be used to develop a vaccine to protect against the STD

'That really was a surprise,' said author Sanjay Ram, an infectious diseases expert at UMass Memorial Medical Center.

'Nobody would have predicted that these two proteins that were believed not to be surface exposed would work in vaccines.'

In the study, published Tuesday in the journal mBio, scientists fed AI data on proteins from gonorrhea.

The AI, called Efficacy Discriminative Educated Network (EDEN), uses a feature similar to face recognition technology to understand the difference between proteins, said Andreas Holm Mattson, the founder of AI immunology startup Evaxian.

The technology analyzed different combinations of proteins from the surface of gonorrhea to suggest the best formula for a vaccine.

Scientists then immunized mice with one of 11 combinations of two to three antigens recommended by the AI.

The mice were given three doses with three weeks between each dose.

Two to three weeks after the final dose, blood was then collected from the mice and exposed to the bacteria.

Scientists measured the immune response and found that mice immunized with the proteins FtsN and NGO0265 had the strongest immune response.

FtsN is involved in the division of gonorrhea cells. Scientists are not certain of the role of NGO0265, but say it is also displayed on the cell surface of gonorrhea.

The researchers then combined the two proteins into a chimeric protein - a protein created through the joining of two genes - which induced a similar immune response.

The scientists said they were now considering a Phase 1 clinical trial of their vaccine to ensure it is safe to use in humans. Any vaccine based on this research is years away, they said.

About 700,000 Americans get gonorrhea every year, statistics from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) suggest.

Gonorrhea infections reached record levels in the 1970s and 1980s with around 400 cases per 100,000 people at its peak.

But with the advent of technologies such as condoms, increased awareness of STDs and infection control programs, annual infections had plummeted by 74 percent since 1996.

Over the last few years, however, infections have started to rise again with factors like having more sexual partners, using condoms less often, a lack of testing and the emergence of antibiotic resistance all fueling the rise.

People can only become infected with gonorrhea via vaginal, anal, or oral sex when the bacteria is passed in bodily fluids from an infected person.

Early warning signs of infection include experiencing pain while urinating, having an abnormal discharge from the penis or anus and a redness or swelling in the urethra or vagina.

Infections are treated with a round of antibiotics. But in recent years, with the emergence of antibiotic resistance, doctors are beginning to warn that an alternative is needed.

If left untreated, long-term gonorrhea infections can raise the risk of complications during pregnancy like low birthweight and raise the risk of contracting other STIs like HIV by making it easier for the virus to enter the bloodstream.

In some cases, infections can lead to infertility in men by forming scar tissue in the urethra — which can reduce how many sperm exit the body during ejaculation.

In women, the bacteria can move through the cervix into the upper reproductive organs leading to inflammation and scarring, which can affect fertility.

Earlier this year in Boston, two people were diagnosed with a 'concerning' strain of super gonorrhea.

There was no connection between the pair, suggesting the super strain is circulating more widely in the community.

Dr Margaret Cooke, head of Massachusetts' health department, said the discovery was a 'serious public health concern.'

In addition to Boston, the strain was previously diagnosed in the UK and Austria.

FBI chief frets over possible Hamas-inspired attacks in US

Christopher Wray has warned lawmakers that the crisis in Israel is heightening the risk of Americans being targeted

FBI Director Christopher Wray has told US lawmakers that he sees a heightened risk of terrorist plots on American soil by individuals or groups who may be inspired by Hamas’ attacks against Israel.

“We assess that the actions of Hamas and its allies will serve as an inspiration, the likes of which we haven’t seen since ISIS launched its so-called caliphate several years ago,” Wray said on Tuesday in a Senate Homeland Security Committee hearing. “In just the past few weeks, multiple foreign terrorist organizations have called for attacks against Americans and the West.”

Wray made his comments as Israeli forces escalated their incursion in the Gaza Strip in response to the October 7 attacks by Hamas militants, who killed an estimated 1,400 people and took hundreds of others as hostages. More than 8,500 Palestinians have been killed, reportedly including at least 50 when an Israeli airstrike targeted a Hamas commander in Gaza’s Jabalia refugee camp.

At least some of the threats against US interests stem from groups seeking to retaliate for Washington’s support of Israel. In just the past two weeks, there have been 27 drone and rocket attacks on US military bases in Iraq and Syria. The Pentagon has blamed militias sponsored by Iran, which also is the main backer for Hamas.

“Here in the United States, our most immediate concern is that violent extremists individuals or small groups will draw inspiration from the events in the Middle East to carry out attacks against Americans going about their daily lives,” Wray told the Senate committee. He added, “The reality is that the terrorism threat has been elevated throughout 2023,but the ongoing war in the Middle East has raised the threat of an attack against Americans in the United States to a whole 'nother level.”

Wray said the FBI has no indication that Hamas has the intention or the capability to carry out operations inside the US. However, he said the agency hasn’t ruled out the possibility that Hamas or another foreign terrorist organization may exploit the war by attacking targets on US soil. The FBI has ongoing investigations of multiple individuals in the US who are affiliated with Hamas, Wray said. Historically, such individuals have been involved in facilitating or financing the group’s operations overseas, he added, but the agency is assessing how the threat may evolve to include attacks inside the US.(This agency is behind the times of what is occurring here)

Republican lawmakers, such as Senator Roger Marshall of Kansas, have warned that failures by President Joe Biden’s administration to secure US borders have put Americans at greater risk of terrorist attacks.

In the federal government’s fiscal year that ended on September 30, US Border Patrol agents encountered 172 migrants who were flagged on the nation’s terrorist watch list. That compared with three such encounters during former President Donald Trump’s last full fiscal year in office.

Belgian transport unions urge members to refuse handling military shipments to Israel

Belgian transport workers’ unions on Tuesday called on their members to refuse to handle military equipment being sent to Israel to use against Palestinians.

The ACV Puls, BTB, BBTK and ACV-Transcom unions said in a joint statement that airport workers have seen arms shipments.

“While a genocide is under way in Palestine, workers at various airports in Belgium are seeing arms shipments in the direction of the war zone,” the statement said.

Israel says it is targeting Hamas military operations and not civilians in Gaza.

A Belgian government spokesperson declined to comment on whether arms were shipped to the region via Belgium.

The unions said that loading or offloading these weapons would mean contributing to supplying organizations that kill innocent people.

“We, several unions active in ground logistics, call on our members not to handle any flights that ship military equipment to Palestine/Israel, like there were clear agreements and rules at the start of the conflict with Russia and Ukraine,” the unions said.

The unions also called for an immediate ceasefire and asked the Belgian government to not tolerate arms shipments through Belgian airports.

“As unions, we stand with those who campaign for peace,” they said.

Hundreds of thousands of demonstrators rallied in cities in Europe, the Middle East and Asia on Saturday to show support for the Palestinians.

Bolivia breaks diplomatic ties with Israel, citing ‘crimes against humanity’

Bolivia’s government said it had broken diplomatic ties with Israel on Tuesday, accusing Israel of committing crimes against humanity in its attacks on the Gaza Strip.

Bolivia “has decided to break diplomatic relations with the Israeli state in repudiation and condemnation of the aggressive and disproportionate Israeli military offensive taking place in the Gaza Strip,” Deputy Foreign Minister Freddy Mamani announced at a press conference.

Mamani added that Bolivia was calling for a ceasefire and an end to “the blockade that prevents the entry of food, water and other essential elements for life.”

Interim Foreign Minister Maria Nela Prada said the press conference had been called “in reference to the crimes against humanity being committed in the Gaza Strip against the Palestinian people.”

The Israeli foreign ministry did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Bolivia is among the first countries to actively break diplomatic relations with Israel over its war in Gaza.

The South American country had previously cut diplomatic ties with Israel in 2009 under the government of leftist President Evo Morales, also in protest of Israel’s actions in Gaza.

In 2020, the government of right-wing interim President Jeanine Anez reestablished ties.

Tuesday’s announcement came hours after Morales on social media pressured current President Luis Arce to condemn Israel and declare it a terrorist state.

On Monday, Arce met with the Palestinian ambassador to Bolivia.

“We reject the war crimes being committed in Gaza. We support international initiatives to guarantee humanitarian aid, in compliance with international law,” Arce said on social media on Monday.

Gaza health authorities say that 8,525 people, including 3,542 children, have been killed in Israeli attacks since Oct. 7. UN officials say more than 1.4 million of Gaza’s civilian population of about 2.3 million have been made homeless.

The Israel military has accused Hamas, which rules the narrow coastal territory, of using civilian buildings as cover for fighters, commanders and weaponry, accusations it denies.

Chile’s government recalled its ambassador to Israel for consultations on Tuesday after what it described as Israel’s violations of international humanitarian law stemming from its recent military attacks on the Gaza Strip.

Japan 'on standby' to take all possible steps amid yen decline

Japan is "on standby" to take all possible steps to counter excessive volatility in the currency market, its top currency diplomat said Wednesday, expressing concern over rapid yen movements as the currency fell to a one-year low against the U.S. dollar.

The latest verbal warning by Masato Kanda, vice finance minister for international affairs, came as yen selling accelerated despite intervention fears after the Bank of Japan loosened its grip on long-term government bond yields but maintained monetary easing on Tuesday.

"We are ready to take action without ruling out all possible options against excessive volatility," Kanda told reporters. "We are on standby."

Japanese authorities traditionally issue warnings before they intervene in the currency market. The previous yen-buying, dollar-selling intervention was conducted about a year ago to counter what was described as the yen's "rapid" and "one-sided" depreciation.

Kanda said that recent yen moves are excessive, adding that "appropriate action" should be taken because of their impact on people's livelihoods.

The dollar traded in the lower 151 yen zone after climbing as high as 151.74 yen overnight in New York.

The BOJ decided to allow 10-year government bond yields to rise above its previous ceiling of 1.0 percent at the end of a two-day policy-setting meeting on Tuesday.

Last year, Elon Musk stopped using an FAA program allowing jet owners to fly incognito, JetSpy said.

Musk tried to thwart jet-tracking in the past, offering to pay a student to stop posting his flights online.

There is no "silver bullet" to preventing the public from tracking personal jets, the FAA has said.

After trying to dodge jet-tracking accounts for the better part of a year and even forcing the college student who tracks his jets to stop sharing live data on Twitter, Elon Musk appears to have stopped taking advantage of a federal program designed to help camouflage his air travels.

The Tesla CEO had signed up for a free Federal Aviation Administration program that allows private jet owners to fly incognito using a temporary aircraft registration number in January of 2022, but Musk hasn't used the program since August 20, 2022, according to the aircraft-tracking company JetSpy.

Musk applied for a new aircraft registration number four times, JetSpy told Insider. The first time the billionaire's aircraft used the FAA's privacy ICAO aircraft address program, also known as PIA, was on January 25, 2022, but less than eight months later he applied for his last PIA and only used the temporary aircraft registration number for one flight before returning to his permanent ICAO address, according to JetSpy data.

Musk did not respond to Insider's request for comment ahead of publication.

Musk's jet travels first came into the spotlight when University of Central Florida college student Jack Sweeney began posting the billionaire's travel coordinates on social media to thousands of followers...

...The FAA launched the PIA program in 2019 and has issued 390 alternate ID codes since the program began, an FAA spokesperson told Insider.

On Wednesday, Forbes reported, citing JetSpy data, that the PIA program has been used to disguise the travels of 48 private jets this year, including the private planes of big names like Jeff Bezos and Taylor Swift.

Musk's vocal disdain for jet-tracking dates back to 2021 when he offered Sweeney $5,000 to take down his @ElonJet account, but the college student offered him some advice instead — sign up for the FAA's PIA program. Musk used his first alternate ID through the PIA program about a month later.

The PIA program allows aircraft owners to switch out their registration number every 20 days, according to the FAA, but, it can be a laborious process. Christian Renneissen, Collins Aerospace's manager for flight deck connectivity, previously told the trade publication AV Buyer that while the PIA program is essentially free, it's a hassle due to a substantial amount of paperwork. What's more, the entire process would have to start all over again if the new registration number is exposed and tied to the owner — which, in Musk's case, can be all too easy.

Sweeney told Insider that Musk's Gulfstream can be identified by its frequent trips between airports near SpaceX's launch site in Texas and its headquarters in California.

"It's pretty easy to spot when you can link Brownsville and Hawthorne together," he said.

Planes are also required to ditch the PIA for their permanently assigned ICAO address when they fly internationally, which could be an issue for Musk, who visited Shanghai and Rome earlier in 2023.

The incognito registration number also doesn't prevent Sweeney from tracking the private jet via ADS-B Exchange, a public flight-tracking database.

The FAA acknowledged during a conference last year that the program is not a "silver bullet" solution to jet-tracking.

"The PIA program limits the ability to identify an aircraft in real-time using inexpensive, commercially available receivers," an FAA spokesperson told Insider. "This does not prevent parties from using alternative methods (plane spotting, movement correlations, etc.) to identify PIA participants."

US, Israel weighing peacekeepers for Gaza – Bloomberg

The allies are reportedly discussing the potential deployment of an international force in the Palestinian enclave

US and Israeli officials are mulling an international peacekeeping force for the Gaza Strip should Israel successfully remove Hamas from power, Bloomberg reported, suggesting American troops could take part in the deployment.

The two countries have been “exploring options” for Gaza’s future as Israel escalates its ground assault on the Palestinian enclave, including several different peacekeeping arrangements, officials familiar with the discussions told the outlet on Tuesday.

“One option would grant temporary oversight to Gaza to countries from the region,backed by troops from the US, UK, Germany and France. Ideally, it would also include representation from Arab nations such as Saudi Arabia or the United Arab Emirates,”Bloomberg reported.

While the officials stressed that the conversations are still in an early stage, US Secretary of StateAntony Blinken hintedat the issue in recent comments to lawmakers, suggestingWashington is deeply involved in the planning.

“We can’t have a reversion to the status quo with Hamas running Gaza. We also can’t have – and the Israelis start with this proposition themselves – Israel running or controlling Gaza,” he said at a Tuesday Senate hearing. “Between those shoals are a variety of possible permutations that we’re looking at very closely now, as are other countries.”

Though Blinken did not elaborate on those possibilities, officials told Bloomberg that they also include the creation of a peacekeeping force modeled on the 1979 peace treaty between Israel and Egypt, under which the Multinational Force and Observers (MFO) monitor areas of the Sinai Peninsula. The Israeli government believes that idea is “worthy of consideration,” one official said.

Under a third arrangement, the United Nations would be granted “temporary governance” of Gaza, although Israeli officials are reportedly less enthusiastic about the plan, viewing it as “impractical.” (The UN are Hamas sympathizers and supporters!)

In announcing Israel’s ongoing ground operation in the Palestinian enclave, Defense Minister Yoav Gallant said the country was seeking to “destroy Hamas” and create a new “security regime.” He emphasized that Israel must not be responsible for “day-to-day life in the Gaza Strip,” suggesting it would seek to hand off governance to a third party.

US President Joe Biden is hesitant to place “even a small contingent of American troops in harm’s way,” and is still far from a final decision, according to Bloomberg. Though the White House has discussed theneed to establish a sovereign Palestinian stateafter the current conflict, exactly how to achieve that goal “has barely featured in discussions”among US officials. (That’s BS, Palestine never existed.)

The latest bout of violence in Gaza erupted following a deadly Hamas terrorist attack on October 7, which killed some 1,400 Israelis, most of them civilians. The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) have carried out heavy airstrikes on the territory in the weeks since, leaving more than 8,000 dead, and have gradually stepped up a major ground attack, which officials say could go on for months.

Pentagon announces ICBM test

The US military has set its latest Minuteman III missile launch to “showcase” its nuclear capability

The Pentagon has announced the latest test of the Minuteman III intercontinental ballistic missile, saying the ICBM will be launched to demonstrate the capability of the US nuclear arsenal.

The launch will take place on Wednesday at the Vandenberg Space Force Base in Southern California, Pentagon spokesman Brigadier General Pat Ryder said on Tuesday in a press briefing. He noted that the silo-launched missile will be tested without a warhead attached.

“This launch showcases the redundancy and reliability of our strategic-deterrence system while sending a visible message of assurance to allies,” Ryder told reporters.

The test comes less than two months after the US Air Force Global Strike Command launched a Minuteman III from the same base. Like the last launch, Wednesday’s test is described as prescheduled and “routine.”However, it comes amid rising geopolitical tensions as the Russia-Ukraine conflict drags on, the Israel-Hamas war escalates, and US-China relations continue to deteriorate.

Washington canceled or delayed at least two ICBM tests last year, citing concerns about potential “misunderstandings” with Russia and China. An August 2022 launch was delayed because it would have come at the same time that Chinese forces were holding drills off the coast of Taiwan. Four months earlier, the Pentagon said it had canceled a Minuteman III test because “it would be irresponsible” to disregard the risks of escalating the Ukraine crisis at a time when Russian nuclear forces were on high alert.

The Minuteman III was first deployed in 1970 and was originally meant to be in service for only about ten years, but it has instead been modernized. Its replacement, the Ground-Based Strategic Deterrent (GBSD), is scheduled to be available for use in 2029, but Air Force Secretary Frank Kendall told US lawmakers earlier this year that it will be a “challenge” to have the new ICBM ready in time.

Ryder also updated reporters on the recent spate of drone and rocket attacks on US bases in the Middle East, which the Pentagon has blamed on Iranian-backed militias. He said there had been 27 attacks, including 16 in Iraq and 11 in Syria. He said six of the attacks occurred after the US launched airstrikes against two facilities in eastern Syria allegedly used by Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps last week. None of the attacks since that time have injured US troops or damaged infrastructure at US bases.

“We know that these groups are funded, trained, sponsored by the Iranian government, and we hold the Iranian government responsible for that,” Ryder said.

Because revelatory cases like these come around so rarely, this series seeks to underline what was missed or under-emphasized by traditional media coverage — and also to put what wasn’t missed into proper context from a homeland security perspective. This series of reports is based on a review and analysis of hundreds of publicly filed court records from the ongoing federal prosecution of alleged Bronx-based Hezbollah operative Ali Kourani and Dearborn, Michigan-based Samer El Debek.

Missing the Story

Among the documents pouring out of the Kourani case, for instance, are lightly redacted, normally classified internal FBI reports known as “FD-302 forms.” These publicly name 15 people whom Kourani fingered as probable Unit 910 operatives or Hezbollah-linked sympathizers in New York, New Jersey, Florida, and Canada. The 302s name a Queens mosque Kourani told them was aligned with Hezbollah, and lists the names of reputed sympathizers involved in credit card fraud, counterfeit clothing businesses, an auto parts theft scam, and exporting cars to West Africa (a familiar Hezbollah global money-laundering hallmark). The other prosecution, not yet clearly connected to Kourani,names Samer El Debek of Dearborn, Michigan, as a 910 operative.Both were arrested in June 2017, but the El Debek proceedings have been purposefully delayed for unspecified reasons, so no new filings there.

From a law enforcement intelligence perspective like mine, it is downright surprising that some suspect names were purposefully placed in the public realm, along with phone numbers, locations, entity names, and email addresses. These should have caused the opening of other investigations that may well be ongoing and could be at risk if targets are exposed.

At the same time, from a journalism perspective like mine, the absence of media exploitation of all this is just as surprising.

The arrests drew decent initial media coverage but not much since the case developed, and certainly none mentioning FBI 302s, or that Kourani’s brother was also a U.S.-based Hezbollah operative but went through deportation proceedings rather than prosecution, or that the father of these alleged terrorist brothers had himself smuggled over the U.S.-Mexico border. Instead, an October 15, 2018, pieceby the New York Times about the Ali case — whose reporter saw all of these documents — chose to concentrate on a defeated defense argument that mendacious FBI agents swindled the information out of Kourani. The claim was debunked by the presiding judge.

Recruitment, Mexico Border Infiltration, and a Doorman Apartment

Ali Kourani was born in 1984 to an extended Lebanese family clan that he once described to FBI agents as “the bin Ladens of Hezbollah.” He has four siblings. Under unclear circumstances, he legally entered the United States from Cyprus in 2003, probably claiming refugee status to obtain permanent residency. He went to school, earning a BS in biomedical engineering and then an MBA.

Kourani applied for citizenship in 2008 and was naturalized the following year. He married a Lebanese woman from the clan and had two children, all living in Canada today. Kourani had a side hustle in New York that would later come in handy as he was looking for a place to store explosives: hawking counterfeit clothing. (More on that in a future column.)

The family connectivity, if nothing else, provided good reason for the FBI to approach Kourani in about 2016 to ask about Hezbollah. He rebuffed the agents at first, of course. Later while visiting Lebanon, a family brawl ensued over custody of the couple’s two children. Kourani stormed over to the American embassy in Beirut and offered to trade information for revenge.

He asked for his in-laws and their extended Hezbollah family to be placed on a no-fly list and be arrested; for help getting his kids to immigrate to him in the U.S. from Canada; for help getting his mother and father to immigrate to the U.S. from Lebanon; for a job with a salary of $120,000; and said a New York apartment building with a doorman would be nice.

The FBI let Kourani and his lawyer believe he had become an informant in exchange for this wish list.

But promises were carefully never made or inferred. The agents — and soon, the presiding judge — saw his information during another five meetings in New York as a criminal confession.

What emerged was the following intelligence.

Hezbollah’s Unit 910 recruited Kourani in 2008 — the first year he was eligible to apply for American citizenship — through well-placed relative Sheikh Hussein Kourani during a trip to Lebanon. One of Kourani’s first assignments was to submit a citizenship application necessary to freely travel abroad on Unit 910 business. He allegedly marked “no” in the citizenship application form box asking if he had ever been involved with a terrorist organization, one of the crimes for which he is now currently charged.

Unit 910 cadres committed murderous attacks against civilian Jews and Israelis in Argentina in the early 1990s, and more recently in Bulgaria and Thailand. During saber-rattling with President Trump earlier this year over nuclear deal sanctions, Iranian Revolutionary Guard CorpsGen. Qasem Soleimani warned:“Mr. Gambler, Trump! I’m telling you that we are close to you, exactly where, you wouldn’t think that we are.” He was no doubt referring to Unit 910, the IJO, which took Kourani in.

His recruitment came at a time when Hezbollah was gearing up for revenge attacks against Israel for the February 2008 assassination of Unit 910 leader Imad Mughniyah, whose spare tire exploded, killing him in Damascus. While in Lebanon for training that year, he was assigned to a handler named “Fadi,” who Kourani believed later helped run the 2012 bus bombing targeting Israelis in Bulgaria and disrupted 2014 attacks in Thailand. Fadi also appeared to oversee all unit operatives in the U.S. and Canada.

Kourani was taught how to communicate with Fadi using an old pager system and seven disposable email and Facebook accounts. Kourani’s father Muhammed Kourani and brother Moustafa Kourani were dialed in. When Kourani would arrive in Lebanon for debriefings on his U.S. activities, he would send pager codes to Fadi, who would then contact his brother or father’s cell phone within 48 hours to have them set up a meeting. Supporting Hezbollah was a family affair: Kourani identified his brother as a “member” of Hezbollah; his father is described as being “close” to known Hezbollah associates.

This association is also significant as a border security and illegal immigration enforcement aside. A one-paragraph footnote in the court records states that the father illegally infiltrated into the United States through the U.S.-Mexico border. That would put him in a rare — but expanding — category of suspected migrant-terrorists who entered the U.S. in such a manner since 9/11.

Details about the father’s border entry are scant, but the court records state that Muhammed Kourani was able to stay in the U.S. long enough to fraudulently marry a woman to gain legal residency.

He then used his legal residence status to help the brother, Moustafa, also gain legal residency inside the United States.

Nothing is publicly known about how Moustafa entered the United States, or if he too allegedly worked on behalf of Hezbollah. However, later during the FBI’s 2017 investigation of Kourani, records show the FBI did indeed have an open terrorism case on Moustafa while the Hezbollah “member” brother was in deportation proceedings. It’s unclear what became of either the terrorism or immigration cases against the brother, as is the nature of their father’s activities. At some point, however, Muhammed Kourani returned to Lebanon.

Annular Solar Eclipse over Utah

Part of the Sun disappeared earlier this month, but few people were worried. The missing part, which included the center from some locations, just went behind the Moon in what is known as an annular solar eclipse. Featured here is an eclipse sequence taken as the Moon was overtaking the rising Sun in the sky. The foreground hill is Factory Butte in Utah, USA. The rays flaring out from the Sun are not real they result from camera aperture diffraction and are known as sunstar. The Moon is real, but it is artificially brightened to enhance its outline which helps the viewer better visualize the Moon's changing position during this ring-of-fire eclipse. As stunning as this eclipse sequence is, it was considered just practice by the astrophotographer. The reason? She hopes to use this experience to better photograph the total solar eclipse that will occur over North America on April 8, 2024.

Salts and Organics Observed on Ganymede’s Surface by NASA’s Juno

Data collected by NASA’s Juno mission indicates a briny past may be bubbling to the surface on Jupiter’s largest moon.

NASA’s Juno mission has observed mineral salts and organic compounds on the surface of Jupiter’s moon Ganymede. Data for this discovery was collected by the Jovian InfraRed Auroral Mapper (JIRAM) spectrometer aboard the spacecraft during a close flyby of the icy moon. The findings, which could help scientists better understand the origin of Ganymede and the composition of its deep ocean, were published on Oct. 30 in the journal Nature Astronomy.

Larger than the planet Mercury, Ganymede is the biggest of Jupiter’s moons and has long been of great interest to scientists due to the vast internal ocean of water hidden beneath its icy crust. Previous spectroscopic observations by NASA’s Galileo spacecraft and Hubble Space Telescope as well as the European Southern Observatory’s Very Large Telescope hinted at the presence of salts and organics, but the spatial resolution of those observations was too low to make a determination.

On June 7, 2021, Juno flew over Ganymede at a minimum altitude of 650 miles (1,046 kilometers). Shortly after the time of closest approach, the JIRAM instrument acquired infrared images and infrared spectra (essentially the chemical fingerprints of materials, based on how they reflect light) of the moon’s surface. Built by the Italian Space Agency, Agenzia Spaziale Italiana, JIRAM was designed to capture the infrared light (invisible to the naked eye) that emerges from deep inside Jupiter, probing the weather layer down to 30 to 45 miles (50 to 70 kilometers) below the gas giant’s cloud tops. But the instrument has also been used to offer insights into the terrain of moons Io, Europa, Ganymede, and Callisto (known collectively as the Galilean moons for their discoverer, Galileo).

The JIRAM data of Ganymede obtained during the flyby achieved an unprecedented spatial resolution for infrared spectroscopy – better than 0.62 miles (1 kilometer) per pixel. With it, Juno scientists were able to detect and analyze the unique spectral features of non-water-ice materials, including hydrated sodium chloride, ammonium chloride, sodium bicarbonate, and possibly aliphatic aldehydes.

“The presence of ammoniated salts suggests that Ganymede may have accumulated materials cold enough to condense ammonia during its formation,” said Federico Tosi, a Juno co-investigator from Italy’s National Institute for Astrophysics in Rome and lead author of the paper. “The carbonate salts could be remnants of carbon dioxide-rich ices.”

Exploring Other Jovian Worlds

Previous modeling of Ganymede’s magnetic field determined the moon’s equatorial region, up to a latitude of about 40 degrees, is shielded from the energetic electron and heavy ion bombardment created by Jupiter’s hellish magnetic field. The presence of such particle fluxes is well known to negatively impact salts and organics.

During the June 2021 flyby, JIRAM covered a narrow range of latitudes (10 degrees north to 30 degrees north) and a broader range of longitudes (minus 35 degrees east to 40 degrees east) in the Jupiter-facing hemisphere.

“We found the greatest abundance of salts and organics in the dark and bright terrains at latitudes protected by the magnetic field,” said Scott Bolton, Juno’s principal investigator from the Southwest Research Institute in San Antonio. “This suggests we are seeing the remnants of a deep ocean brine that reached the surface of this frozen world.”

Ganymede is not the only Jovian world Juno has flown by. The moon Europa, thought to harbor an ocean under its icy crust, also came under Juno’s gaze, first in October 2021 and then in September 2022. Now Io is receiving the flyby treatment. The next close approach to that volcano-festooned world is scheduled for Dec. 30, when the spacecraft will come within 932 miles (1,500 kilometers) of Io’s surface.

This phase of the secure reporting mechanism is for current or former U.S. government employees, service members, or contractors with direct knowledge of alleged U.S. government programs or activities related to UAP dating back to 1945 to contact AARO to voluntarily submit a report. The former Air Force intelligence officer who claims the U.S. military is covering up evidence of extraterrestrial life has repeatedly refused to cooperate with the Defense Department agency that's investigating UFOs, its director said.

Retired Maj. David Grusch, who delivered bombshell testimony to a House subcommittee in July, "has not come to see us and provide information," Sean Kirkpatrick, director of the All-Domain Anomaly Resolution Office, told reporters on Tuesday.

Grusch had testified that he was told about a secret program to recover and reverse-engineer crashed alien aircraft and that possible "nonhuman biological material" was found at one site.

"I think we've interviewed most of the people that he may have talked to, but we don't know that," Kirkpatrick said. "And we have extended an invitation at least four or five times now for him to come in over the last eight months or so and it has been declined.”

Kirkpatrick also said the last time he spoke with Grusch was when Kirkpatrick was part of joint staff intelligence "at U.S. Space Command about five years ago and it was not on this topic."

Grusch could not immediately be reached by The Messenger for comment.

Kirkpatrick's remarks came during a news conference in response to a reporter's question about the launch of a new, secure website where current and former government employees, service members and contractors can blow the whistle on official programs or activities related to UFOs.

The website is eventually set to be opened to the general public.

The AARO was created by Congress last year and is using a "rigorous scientific framework and a data-driven approach" to address reports of unidentified anomalous phenomena," the Pentagon's latest official term for UFOs.

“These reports will be used to inform AARO’s congressionally directed historical record report and investigations into alleged U.S. government UAP programs due to Congress in June of 2024," Kirkpatrick said.

Kirkpatrick also addressed the claims of reverse-engineering.

"I currently have no evidence of any program having ever existed as a way to do any sort of reverse-engineering of any sort of extraterrestrial UAP," he said. “We do have a requirement by law to bring those whistleblowers or other interviewees in who think that it does exist, and they may have evidence that pertains to that. We do not have any of that evidence right now.”

NASA has awarded the Kennedy Operational and Institutional Support (KOIS) contract to Chiricahua-Logical Joint Venture of Albuquerque, New Mexico, to provide services at the agency’s Kennedy Space Center in Florida.

KOIS is an Indefinite-Delivery Indefinite-Quantity, Level of Effort contract that includes a one-month phase-in period beginning Nov. 1, 2023, followed by a 22-month base period and three 1-year option periods. The maximum total award value is not to exceed $20 million.

The scope includes a broad range of operational and institutional support services including internal controls for property, logistics, American Sign Language interpreter, institutional training and development, and export control support.

The contract covers onsite and offsite work at Kennedy, Cape Canaveral Space Force Station, and other locations authorized by the contracting officer, including other NASA Centers if the need arises.

Freedom of thought, speech and conscience are inalienable natural1 and civil rights recognized in America and in countries where respect for autonomy2 and protection of bodily integrity3,4,5 places limits on the power of the state. Under the First Amendment of the U.S. Constitution, Americans have the legal right to peacefully dissent and "petition the Government for a redress of grievances."6

The freedom to use our intelligence and follow our conscience7,8,9 is absolute when we make a decision that involves taking a risk of injury or death for ourselves or on behalf of our minor child,10 and the freedom to speak in the digital public square about what that means should be absolute as well.

This is a commentary about a special report I have researched and written on the systematic abuse of parents with vaccine injured children and the silencing of my voice and information published by the charitable National Vaccine Information Center in the digital public square both before and after the declaration of a coronavirus pandemic in 2020. I have submitted the report to the US House Judiciary Select Subcommittee on the Weaponization of the Federal Government.11

Entitled "The Silencing of Barbara Loe Fisher and the National Vaccine Information Center in the Digital Public Square: A Violation of Freedom of Thought, Speech and Conscience," the report is anchored with more than 300 live linked references.12

It contains information about the collaborative actions taken by government officials, political operatives, corporations, academic and financial institutions, media, philanthropic foundations, and global governmental organizations to target, discredit, discriminate against and censor me and NVIC for our mission since 1982 to prevent vaccine injuries and deaths through public education, and to defend the legal right of Americans to make voluntary decisions about vaccination without being coerced or sanctioned for the decision made.

NVIC’s Long Record of Vaccine Safety and Freedom Advocacy Targeted for Censorship

In researching this report, I was shocked and saddened by the evidence I found to substantiate that I and NVIC have been blacklisted, even though we have a long, transparent credible public record of working responsibly in the U.S. with the federal and state governments, and urging others to do the same.

It is clear that we have been subjected to demonization and sanctions because for four decades we have exercised our right to dissent and criticize the safety and effectiveness of government recommended vaccines, and we have asked federal health officials to fill in vaccine safety science knowledge gaps, and we have worked in the states to reform U.S. public health policies and vaccine laws.20

I spent three months researching and writing this report because I wanted to understand who, what, when, how, and why NVIC was ghosted on the Internet and my voice was silenced.

While we were being demonized and our presence on the Internet was slowly being suppressed — particularly between 2009 and 2019 — which was followed by de-platforming from four major social media platforms and Pay Pal in 2021,21,22,23 I and NVIC’s staff and volunteers were so busy trying to deal with the blocking of public access to our information that we did not have time to stop and analyze exactly who was responsible.

We poured all of our resources into educating and empowering Americans at the grassroots level in support of the legal right to make informed and voluntary decisions about vaccination.

The decades of grassroots education and advocacy that NVIC has performed, particularly at the state level between 2010 and 2020 through the online NVIC Advocacy Portal, culminated in a national rejection of proposed COVID vaccine mandate bills for children to attend school in America.

All 50 state legislatures refused to mandate the federally recommended COVID-19 vaccine for children as a condition of receiving a private or public school education, even though the government mandated the vaccine for federal employees and large private corporations as a condition of employment.

It is an historic milestone in the history of state-based grassroots advocacy that no legislature in America forced parents to choose between denying their children a school education or injecting them with a biological product recommended by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), a product which has proven to be highly reactive and unreliable in preventing infection and transmission.

The Rise of the Censorship/Disinformation Industrial Complex

n my report, I take the reader on a chronological step-by-step journey from 1982 through 2023, giving an overview of the history of the vaccine safety and informed consent movement in America against the backdrop of the creation of a global mass vaccination infrastructure facilitated by public-private business partnerships encouraged and funded by Congress.32

I describe the major players who, for the past decade especially, have sought to block online conversations about vaccination that do not conform with government and World Health Organization policy, and have used public opposition to vaccine mandates as a political tool to help build what is being aptly characterized as the "Censorship Industrial Complex" or the "Disinformation Industrial Complex."

In the early 1980s, parents of DPT vaccine injured children went head-to-head with the mandatory vaccination lobby led by the pharmaceutical industry, public health and medical trade, and we managed to secure historic acknowledgement in the National Childhood Vaccine Injury Act of 1986 that vaccine safety should be made a national priority.39,40

That accomplishment was based on the fact that federally licensed and recommended vaccines for children, which are mandated by states, can and do injure and kill a minority of them.41

Acknowledgement of that inconvenient truth in the late 20th century, a truth still often denied by those conducting the business of vaccination, planted the first seeds that grew into a national and international Censorship Industrial Complex in the 21st century, which targets not only "vaccine hesitancy," but a cross-section of political, economic, cultural value and belief issues.

First, and perhaps obviously, more men than women work in the fields with the highest rates of occupational injuries. The occupations with the highest rates of deaths are loggers, fishing workers, aircraft pilots, flight engineers, and roofers. In 2018, 97% of loggers, 92% of fishing workers, 94% of pilots and flight engineers, and 98% of roofers were men. The workplace fatalities in these professions are caused by falls, exposure to harmful environments, and injuries by work equipment.

Differences in choice of profession explain only part of the disparity in workplace deaths. Over 40% of all work-related deaths are from transportation incidents. This statistic aligns with the larger trend that over twice as many men as women die in motor vehicle accidents each year. Homicide and suicide are the third-leading cause of workplace deaths. Nationally, 77% of homicide deaths and 79% of suicide deaths are men.

The ways that people get hurt on the job offer insight into the state of men’s health. Overall, men in the US are three times more likely to die of injuries than women. The gender disparity in workplace deaths cannot be attributed to biological differences between men and women. Rather, gendered norms in job choice and behavior place men at risk in and out of the workplace.

American Thinker: A look at the Trump trial in Colorado

A trial for a lawsuit brought by the Colorado Central Republican Committee against Donald Trump in Colorado started Monday, October 30, 2023. It is continuing through the week.

How fitting that this case goes to trial during Halloween week — as a Colorado Republican who knows some backstory it strikes me as a spooky attempt by Trump-haters to make an end run around the U.S. Constitution to get Trump. It is also lawfare.

My purpose here is to give some context, not to give details of the actual trial. From what I’ve seen so far, the petitioners are putting on a fairly good case, but the Trump team is also poking a lot of holes in it.

Readers can go to CSPAN, which is filming the trial live. CSPAN posts that the purpose of the trial as “whether the 14th Amendment’s ‘insurrection ban’ can be used to prevent former President Donald Trump from appearing on Colorado’s presidential election ballots.”

Four teams with numerous attorneys introduced themselves at the beginning of the trial: petitioners, led by Eric Olsen; President Donald Trump’s team, led by Scott Gessler, former Colorado secretary of state; interveners on the Republican State Central Committee, led by Jane Raskin; and the State of Colorado team, led by the Colorado attorney general staff for Jena Griswold, current Colorado secretary of state and a Democrat.

The Honorable Sarah B. Wallace, Denver District Court judge, is presiding over the trial, which has no jury. According to coverage by The Denver Post of the first day of trial, President Trump’s team asked Judge Wallace to recuse herself because she donated money to The Colorado Turnout Project, which states on its website that it aims to prevent violent insurrections, to turn the state blue, and “to build robust networks of opposition” to three remaining Republican representatives in the state. (One-party rule in Colorado, anyone?)

Judge Wallace refused to recuse herself, saying she doesn’t recall that donation but that she meant to donate to an individual. (Then she does remember?) A Colorado Politics article quotes Judge Wallace, who expects to decide the case by the end of November. “I can assure all of the litigants that prior to the start of this litigation and to this day, I have formed no opinion whether the events of Jan. 6 constituted an insurrection.”

Let’s hope that Judge Wallace has represented herself honestly at the beginning of this trial and that she will render a just verdict, or one that can be appealed, soon. An appeal may go to the U.S. Supreme Court.

A Colorado Newsline story published in September 2023, when the lawsuit was first filed, lists who filed it. It was Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington on behalf of six Colorado voters: “former Republican U.S. representative from Rhode Island Claudine (Cmarada) Schneider, who now lives in Colorado; former Colorado House and Senate Majority Leader Norma Anderson, an unaffiliated voter who recently left the Republican Party; Denver Post columnist and Republican activist Krista Kafer; Michelle Priola, Kathi Wright, and Christopher Castilian.

“The defendants are Trump and Secretary of State Jena Griswold, a Democrat.”

According to The Denver Post, “The lawsuit seeks to compel Colorado Secretary of State Jena Griswold to bar Trump from the Republican primary election and, if he wins the Republican nomination, from the state’s general election ballot.”

If context is important in anything, it is important to know concerning this lawsuit. Here’s a little context: before the 2022 midterm elections, I attended a debate of candidates for treasurer and secretary of state in Colorado at the University of Denver. The debate between Secretary of State Griswold (D) and Pam Anderson (R) came second. Griswold, seeking re-election, got up and proceeded to slander President Trump and voters who supported him, on and on, instead of speaking about her office and its issues.

Let me emphasize: the Colorado secretary of state went on a hate-filled rant about President Trump in a public forum when she should have been debating issues about her office. She even said that Trump tried to steal the election.

Secretary Griswold won re-election. Now she is a defendant along with Trump in the current trial. How does that happen? One might say, on Halloween, by hook and by crook.

WASHINGTON—House Committee on Oversight and Accountability Chairman James Comer (R-Ky.) today released a video and bank records memorandum revealing how Joe Biden received $40,000 in laundered China money from the account of his brother, James Biden, and his sister-in-law, Sara Biden, in the form of a personal check.

The money trail begins in July 2017 when Hunter Biden demanded payment from his Chinese Communist Party (CCP) linked associate. On July 30, 2017, Hunter Biden sent a message to Raymond Zhao—a CEFC associate—demanding a $10 million dollar capital payment and claimed his father, Joe Biden, was sitting in the room. CEFC is a Chinese energy company linked to the CCP. The Bidens began working with CEFC when Joe Biden was Vice President.

On August 8, 2017, Northern International Capital, a Chinese company affiliated with CEFC, sent $5 million to Hudson West III, a joint venture established by Hunter Biden and CEFC associate Gongwen Dong. That same day, Hudson West III sent $400,000 to Owasco, P.C., an entity owned and controlled by Hunter Biden. On August 14, 2017, Hunter Biden wired $150,000 to Lion Hall Group, a company owned by President Biden’s brother James and sister-in-law Sara Biden. On August 28, 2017, Sara Biden withdrew $50,000 in cash from Lion Hall Group. Later the same day, she deposited it into her and James Biden’s personal checking account. On September 3, 2017, Sara Biden cut a check to Joe Biden for $40,000 for a “loan repayment.”

Remember when Joe Biden told the American people that his son didn’t make money in China?

Well, not only did he lie about his son Hunter making money in China, but it also turns out that $40,000 in laundered China money landed in Joe Biden’s bank account in the form of a personal check.

And the Oversight Committee has it.

Here’s how Joe Biden benefited from his family’s shady deal with CEFC, a Chinese Communist Party linked company.

It all began with a shakedown in the summer of 2017, when Hunter Biden sent a message to his CEFC associate demanding a $10 million capital payment.

As Hunter Biden extorted this associate, Hunter claimed he was sitting with his father and that the Biden network would turn on his associate if he didn’t pony up the money.

The extortion scheme worked.

Days later, $5,000,000 flowed in from a Chinese affiliate of CEFC. Over the following three weeks, Biden family members made a series of complicated financial transactions to hide the source of the China money.

Here’s how that happened:

First, Northern International Capital, a Chinese company associated with CEFC, wired $5,000,000 to Hudson West III, a joint venture established by Hunter Biden and a CEFC associate.

Then, Hudson West III sent $400,000 to an entity owned and controlled by Hunter Biden.

Next, Hunter Biden wired $150,000 to Lion Hall Group, a company owned by Joe Biden’s brother James and sister-in-law Sara Biden.

Sara Biden then withdrew $50,000 in cash from Lion Hall Group. Later the same day, she deposited it into her and James Biden’s personal checking account.

A few days later, Sara Biden cut a check to Joe Biden for $40,000. The memo line of the check said, “loan repayment.”

We previously exposed a $200,000 payment James made to his brother Joe that came from funds provided by a now bankrupt health care company called Americore.

Like the payment to Joe from Americore funds, it’s certainly plausible that this payment where James and Sara used funds from China was indeed a loan repayment to Joe.

But even if this $40,000 check was a loan repayment from James Biden, it still shows how Joe benefited from his family cashing in on his name – with money from China no less.

Without his family peddling his name and his son threatening a CEFC associate with consequences that he said Joe Biden knew about, James wouldn’t have had the money to write the $40,000 check to his brother Joe.

It’s also worth remembering that Biden family efforts to secure millions from this Chinese company began when Joe Biden was still Vice President.

In taking funds sourced to a CCP-linked company that wanted to advance China’s interests, Joe Biden exposed himself to future blackmail and put America’s interests behind his own desire for money.

The House Oversight Committee will continue to follow the money and will hold President Biden accountable for his corruption.

The Alabama senator responsible for a blockade on military confirmations said he was working Tuesday to finally approve the Marine Corps' No. 2 leader as the commandant, Gen. Eric Smith, remained hospitalized following a medical emergency Sunday.

The move by Republican Sen. Tommy Tuberville comes a day after the Marines announced that a three-star officer further down the line of succession would step into Smith's role due to a leadership vacuum at the very top of the service. The assistant commandant position has remained vacant because Tuberville has stopped the Senate from approving military promotions and confirmations outside of some top officers for most of the year.

The Senate blockade became a major issue after Smith was hospitalized suddenly on Sunday evening and the service had no confirmed assistant commandant to take his place. The Marine Corps provided no update on Smith's condition Tuesday, despite news reports that he had suffered a heart attack and statements from emergency responders of a cardiac arrest incident near his residence.

While Lt. Gen. Christopher Mahoney was nominated to be assistant commandant of the Marines in July, the Senate has been unable to confirm him because Tuberville is single-handedly holding up all general and admiral promotions in protest of the Pentagon's abortion policy.

Before his medical emergency, Smith had effectively been forced to fill both roles due to the hold.

Despite his effort to get Mahoney approved, Tuberville insisted Tuesday that he is not dropping his larger hold and continued to deny that his actions are affecting the military's ability to be ready for a war, arguing that "people are doing their jobs."

But he also acknowledged that Smith's medical issue prompted him to rethink the assistant commandant position. He is using a procedural maneuver known as a cloture petition that allows a senator to force a vote on a nominee if they get the support of at least 16 of their colleagues. It's the same tactic Tuberville used in September that forced Democrats to hold roll call votes on Smith, the Army chief of staff and the chairman of Joint Chiefs of Staff after months of resistance.

Tuberville said he already has the requisite 16 signatures to force a vote on Mahoney.

Meanwhile, Maj. Jim Stenger, the head spokesperson for the headquarters of the Marine Corps, told Military.com that Smith was still in the hospital Tuesday afternoon. The service did not give any new details of Smith's medical emergency, which the Corps initially announced Monday.

The New York Times, USA Today and USNI News, which cited anonymous current or former defense officials, said that Smith suffered a heart attack. Military.com could not independently confirm those reports.

A spokesperson for District of Columbia Fire and Emergency Medical Services told Military.com that a man collapsed during a run due to cardiac arrest in southeast Washington, D.C., on Sunday evening, though they did not identify him as Smith. USA Today reported that he was jogging near Marine Barracks Washington.

"I can confirm that D.C. Fire and EMS responded to a cardiac arrest in the area of 7th and G Street SE at 4:58 on Sunday," Noah Gray, chief communications officer for DC Fire and EMS, told Military.com on Tuesday.

"Bystanders called 911 and began CPR after witnessing an adult male collapse on the sidewalk while running. Our EMTs and paramedics performed high-performance CPR on the patient and transported him to a nearby hospital. We cannot confirm or comment on the identity of the patient," he said.

The Visa Waiver Program (VWP), administered by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) in consultation with the Department of State (State), permits citizens ofdesignated countries to travel to the United States for business or tourism for stays of up to 90 days without a visa.The eligibility requirements for a country’s designation in the VWP are defined in Section 217 of the Immigration and Nationality Act (INA)1 (including as amended most recently by the Visa Waiver Program Improvement and Terrorist Travel Prevention Act of 2015). A requirement of the program is that any country seeking to participate in the VWP must enter into and implement an agreement with the United States to share information regarding whether citizens and nationals of that country traveling to the United States represent a threat to the security or welfare of the United States or its citizens.2 To implement this program requirement in a manner consistent with law, Presidential Memoranda,3 and DHS’s increasing requirements for mission-based traveler screening, DHS has determined that all countries in the VWP and those aspiring to join must allow DHS and State to compare the fingerprints of travelers and immigration benefit applicants against their appropriate records, including identity, criminal, and terrorist records, for the purposes of border security, immigration, and traveler screening. This enhancement to the VWP screening capabilities will enable DHS to better identify individuals who pose a threat to the security or welfare of the United States.This Privacy Impact Assessment (PIA) considers the privacy risksand applicable mitigation strategies associated with implementing this Departmental policy.

Introduction

The VWP is a rigorous security partnership that promotes secure travel to the United States while also facilitating Americans’ travel to VWP partner nations. No other program enables the U.S. Government to conduct such broad and in-depth assessments of foreign security standards and operations.

The VWP is administered by DHS in consultation with State and permits citizens of currently 39 designated countries4 to travel to the United States for business or tourism for stays
