Vice Media Group, the company popularly known for its websites such as Vice and Motherboard, said on Monday it had filed for Chapter 11 protection to facilitate its sale to a consortium including a hedge fund founded byJewish billionaireGeorge Soros.
The company said in a court filing that it listed both assets and liabilities in the range of $500 million to $1 billion.
Vice also said the group agreed to the terms of an asset purchase agreement with a consortium of its lenders, which included Fortress Investment Group, Soros Fund Management, and Monroe Capital.

Moscow claims first intercept of UK-made long-range projectile
A Storm Shadow cruise missile was listed among several Western weapons shot down by Russian air defenses
Russian forces have stopped a UK-supplied cruise missile along with several other weapons fired by Ukrainian forces, the Defense Ministry reported in its daily update on Monday. London confirmed delivering Storm Shadow weapons to Ukraine last week, with Kiev promptly using them to attack the city of Lugansk.
The Defense Ministry claimed havingintercepted in the previous 24 hours seven anti-radiation HARM missiles, one Storm Shadow missile and seven rockets fired by HIMARS multiple launch weapon systems. It was the first time that Moscow reported downing one of the projectiles supplied by the UK since Kiev started firing them last week.
The local authorities in Lugansk blamed the new addition to Ukraine’s arsenal for several recent airstrikes on the Russian city. On Monday morning, two of them caused damage to residential buildings, an office, and two cars in the city, a regional monitor reported.
Acting Governor Leonid Pasechnik said that a military aviation school had been hit but that the attack did not cause any casualties, citing preliminary reports from the scene.
Before London sent its cruise missiles, which can strike targetsup to 300km (200 miles) away, Kiev did not have any Western weapons with a comparable range. The Ukrainian government had pleaded for months to acquire such arms, but the US and its allies were previously reluctant to extend Ukraine’s striking capability.
London said the new weapons will bolster the Ukrainian forces for the long-promised counteroffensive against Russia.
The Storm Shadows were touted as a game changer by some media outlets, which reported the impending deliveries days before an official confirmation by the UK. The MBDA-produced missile was described as having some stealth capability thanks to its relatively small size andability to hug terrain to avoid radar detection.

From afar, the whole thing looks like an eagle. A closer look at the Eagle Nebula, however, shows the bright region is actually a window into the center of a larger dark shell of dust. Through this window, a brightly-lit workshop appears where a whole open cluster of stars is being formed. In this cavity, tall pillars and round globules of dark dust and cold molecular gas remain where stars are still forming. Already visible are several young bright blue stars whose light and winds are burning away and pushing back the remaining filaments and walls of gas and dust. The Eagle emission nebula, tagged M16, lies about 6500 light years away, spans about 20 light-years, and is visible with binoculars toward the constellation of the Serpent (Serpens). This picture involved long and deep exposures and combined three specific emitted colors emitted by sulfur (colored as yellow), hydrogen (red), and oxygen (blue).

Human ‘Stash House’ Busted in Southwestern US, 54 People Found Living in Squalor

An El Paso, Texas, stash house where human traffickers hid illegal immigrants was raided recently, with authorities discovering more than 50 illegal immigrants living there.
The Border Patrol’s Santa Teresa Anti-Smuggling Unit, the Border Patrol’s Integrated Targeting Team, and troopers from the Texas Department of Public Safety participated in the raid, according to KTSM-TV.
Border Patrol El Paso Sector Chief Anthony Good said on Twitter that authorities “encountered 54 migrants inside a local stash house living in deplorable conditions. 6 migrants were found to have prior removal orders and will be prosecuted accordingly.”
Stash houses are not uncommon. Last month, the Border Patrol raided two locations near El Paso, according to a Customs and Border Protection release in April.
In one raid, 51 illegal immigrants were discovered. The illegal immigrants had come from Mexico, Honduras, El Salvador and Guatemala.
The release said two so-called caretakers were arrested and face charges connected with human smuggling.
In the second raid from early April, 94 illegal immigrants from Guatemala, Mexico and Ecuador were found in a stash house.
Because Title 42 was still in effect during April, all illegal immigrants found in those raids were deported.
The release said that during federal Fiscal Year 2023, agents in the Border Patrol’s El Paso Sector found 130 stash houses with over 1,800 illegal immigrants.
“The citizens in our local El Paso community provide an important partnership to help us safeguard our city. We encourage anyone with information to report suspicious activity to our office. That one phone call could help save many lives,” Good said.

On Friday, the Department of Justice dropped a key objection to the release of more than 4,500 pages of documents related to the Durham investigation, the Trump-era inquiry into the origins of the FBI’s probe of the Trump campaign’s ties to Russia. The DOJ had previously withheld the records claiming that their disclosure would interfere with an ongoing law enforcement investigation. Instead of filing an anticipated brief that would have defended the withholdings, the department withdrew its assertion of the “ongoing investigation” exemption — strongly suggesting that the Durham investigation has been closed.
The reversal was announced in a motion filed in the Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) lawsuit American Oversight brought in August 2019 to compel the release of documents related to the Durham inquiry, including communications between Durham and senior Justice Department officials and any communications Durham or DOJ officials may have had with the Trump White House or Congress.
Statement from American Oversight Executive Director Heather Sawyer:
“The Durham investigation remains an alarming example of former President Trump’s weaponization of the Justice Department for his own political ends. Tasked with proving Trump’s allegations of a ‘deep state’ plot against him — and given nearly four years and millions of taxpayer dollars to do so — Durham found no wrongdoing. It’s long past time for the American people to see the full extent of the inquiry’s work and its influences and we look forward to the release of these records.”
American Oversight first requested the records in June 2019, after then Attorney General William Barr had instructed Durham to initiate the politicized investigation of the roots of the inquiry into potential ties between Russia and Trump’s 2016 campaign. That original FBI inquiry ultimately led to the larger investigation headed by Special Counsel Robert Mueller.
Lawyers for the Justice Department had previously argued the government could properly withhold more than 4,500 pages of records and one voicemail audio recording responsive to American Oversight’s requests under the FOIA exemption designed to protect ongoing investigations.
The New York Times reported in January that, after four years, the Durham inquiry was winding down “without uncovering anything like the deep state plot alleged by Mr. Trump and suspected by Mr. Barr.” Records previously obtained by American Oversight through the litigation revealed that Barr met frequently with Durham in the period directly after the Mueller investigation ended — 18 times in seven months — raising questions about potential political interference.

Australian gold miner Newcrest backs Newmont's $17.8 billion offer

(Reuters) - Australian gold miner Newcrest Mining Ltd said on Monday it would back Newmont Corp's (NEM.N) A$26.2 billion ($17.8 billion) takeover offer in one of the world's largest buyouts so far this year.
The deal, subject to approval from shareholders of both companies and other regulatory hurdles, would lift Newmont's gold output to nearly double its nearest rival, Barrick Gold Corp (ABX.TO), and catapult the miner past Freeport McMoRan (FCX.N) to become the largest U.S. gold and copper producer by market capitalisation.
Newcrest shareholders would receive 0.400 Newmont share for each share held, with an implied value of A$29.27 a share, higher than a previous exchange ratio of 0.380 that Newcrest's board rejected in February.
Newcrest shares opened on Monday 1.5% higher at A$28.68, and the offer is a 30.4% premium to the stock's price in February before the Newmont bid became public.
Newmont is also allowing Newcrest to pay a franked special dividend of up to $1.10 per share on the implementation of the deal that returns tax credits to Australian shareholders.
The merger is set to be the third-largest deal ever involving an Australian company and the third-largest globally in 2023, according to data from Refinitiv and Reuters' calculations.
"This transaction will combine two of the world's leading gold producers, bringing forward significant value to Newcrest shareholders through the recognition of our outstanding growth pipeline," said Newcrest Chairman Peter Tomsett.
Newmont said it would have about 8 million ounces of total combined annual gold production once the deal closed, with more than 5 million gold ounces from 10 long-life and low-cost mines.
The Denver-based miner added it would have combined annual copper production of approximately 350 million pounds from Australia and Canada.
Newcrest shareholders will be able to choose to receive New York Stock Exchange-listed Newmont shares or Australian-listed CHESS Depository Instruments (CDIs) as payment.
Newcrest said it recommended its shareholders vote in favour of the deal at a meeting expected to be held in September or October.
The deal requires Australia's Foreign Investment Review Board (FIRB) approval as well as Newcrest and Newmont shareholders to vote in support the transaction, among other regulatory requirements.

Jackson, Miss. – A Jackson man was sentenced to 168 months in federal prison for being a felon in possession of a firearm and engaging in business as a manufacturer of firearms, announced U.S. Attorney Darren J. LaMarca and Acting Special Agent in Charge Anthony Spotswood of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives.
According to court documents, Kent Edward Newhouse, 41, possessed firearms on or about July 13, 2022 and July 20, 2022, and engaged in the business of manufacturing firearms from April to July 2022. In April 2022, the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives discovered through a confidential informant that Newhouse was using 3D-printers to manufacture auto-sears, which are firearm components designed to cause semi-automatic firearms to function as fully automatic machineguns. Under federal law, auto-sears are themselves machineguns. On July 13, 2022, Newhouse sold a confidential informant a firearm and several auto-sears. On July 20, 2022, a search warrant was executed at Newhouse’s residence, where additional firearms and auto-sears were located. The government also obtained videos of Newhouse operating fully functional machineguns. Newhouse was previously convicted of felony sale of controlled substances in Madison County in 2009.

A candlelight vigil paying tribute to law enforcement officers who have died in the line of duty drew thousands to the National Mall on May 14 in Washington, D.C. California Reparations Task Force Calls for State Agency to Have Veto Power Over Local Real Estate Decisions
The California Reparations Task Force, formed in 2020, recently voted in favor of recommendations that could include payments of a minimum of $360,000 to each eligible black resident in the state.
According to the California Attorney General’s website, “The purpose of the committee is ‘(1) to study and develop reparation proposals for African Americans; (2) to recommend appropriate ways to educate the California public of the task force’s findings; and (3) to recommend appropriate remedies in consideration of the Task Force’s findings.’”
An additional recommendation centers around taking away local decision making in real estate ordinances in the state. According to Fox News,”California’s reparations task force is calling for the state legislature to require all cities and counties with allegedly segregated neighborhoods to submit all their real estate ordinances to a state agency for approval based on whether they maintain or lessen ‘residential racial segregation.'”
The recommendations would “Require state review and approval of all residential land use ordinances enacted by historically and currently segregated cities and counties.”
From the report:
Residential zoning ordinances have been used for decades in California to prevent African Americans from moving into neighborhoods, thereby maintaining residential segregation. Various laws were also used to prevent additional housing from being built, effectively shutting out African Americans.
To address local zoning laws that reinforce and recreate this systemic housing segregation, the Task Force recommends that the Legislature: (1) identify California cities and counties that have historically redlined neighborhoods and whose current levels of residential racial segregation are statistically similar to the degree of segregation in that city or county when it was redlined; (2) require identified cities and counties to submit all residential land use ordinances for review and approval by a state agency, with the agency rejecting (or requiring modification of) the ordinance if the agency finds that the proposed ordinance will maintain or exacerbate levels of residential racial segregation; and (3) remove this process of additional review and approval for identified cities or counties if the city or county eliminates a certain degree of housing segregation in its geographic territory.
Scholars have found that similar efforts by California to influence localities’ residential zoning decisions—through state supervisory authority—has had some beneficial effects. In the early 1990s, about a quarter of California jurisdictions had a Housing and Community Development- approved housing element in place, whereas today, about 77 percent of California jurisdictions have a Housing and Community Development-approved housing element.
As an alternative to state review and approval of ordinances in the localities described above, the state could adopt a post-hoc approach by creating an administrative appeal board to review challenges to developmental permitting decisions or zoning laws and reversing the denial of a development permit if the underlying zoning requirement is deemed to maintain or reinforce residential racial segregation.
The fate of the task force recommendations is unclear. The Gateway Pundit reported that California Governor Gavin Newsom, in a statement to Fox News, applauded the task force’s work though he sidestepped endorsing any specific recommendations.

The first bill the Democrat-controlled New York State Assembly’s Health Committee is planning to vote on is Assembly Bill 276 – a monstrous piece of legislation that will allow minors to get treatment for STDs as well as vaccines without parental consent.
AB276 was concocted by Amy Paulin (D-Scarsdale), who has represented her district for over 20 years with little to show for her time in Albany. Her bill would allow minors to hide sexually transmitted diseases from parents, potentially allowing for sexual abuse to go unknown, making it easier to abuse a child in New York.
Paulin’s bill, which is expected to pass the committee, obliterates a parent’s right to choose what vaccines a child receives – a dangerous precedent that in a post-Covid world could be a very slippery slope.
The most sinister part of Paulin’s bill is that it guts New York’s Mandated reporter law, which mandates the reporting of any suspected sexual abuse to proper authorities.
By allowing kids to hide STDs, the bill effectively re-writes the mandated reporter law and protects pedophiles.
Another bill coming up this week is A7154, the assembly version of S1531. Both of these bills would create a mandatory vaccine database, giving the state ultimate knowledge of who is vaccinated and who is not.
The assembly bill was introduced by John McDonald (D-Cohoes) who represents much of Rensselaer County and the capital region. McDonald is a pharmacist by trade and has deep ties to the Big Pharma industry in New York.
The Senate version of the Bill was introduced by Senator Brad Hoylman-Sigal, who represents Manhattan’s West Side in the State Senate. Hoylman-Sigal has received the title of the most progressive senator in Albany. Other bills he has written include mandating flu shots on all students, mandatory Covid jabs to attend college, and calling for students to receive sex education that includes LGBT indoctrination starting in Kindergarten.
Both of these calamitous bills are expected to be passed by the Health Committee this week and be voted on in the broader State Assembly, where they are expected to pass in yet another attack against the freedom of New Yorkers.

REPORT: COVID Vaccines Are Causing SEVERE Neurological Complications Including Bell’s Palsy and Strokes.
The COVID-19 vaccines – including Pfizer, Moderna, AstraZeneca, and Johnson & Johnson – have been causing a number of severe, life-changing neurological complications and syndromes, according to a review conducted by the European Journal of Medical Research (EJMR).
These revelations come soon after studies discovered the vaccines, among other things, “increase menstrual disturbance chances by up to 41 percent” and have a strong link to post-vaccination tinnitus.
According to the EJMR, which relied upon research, case reports, and articles related to “adverse effects” to conduct their review, “the short-term outcome of COVID-19 vaccination is promising, but in the medium and long-term, especially with some vaccines, side effects have been reported that are worrisome.”
The study states explicitly that “[e]ach type of vaccine can play a different role in increasing the risk” of the manifestation of the following disorders:
“COVID-19 vaccination can sometimes have severe side effects on [the] nervous system, including the brain, spinal cord, cranial nerves, and peripheral nerves, and has been shown to have adverse vascular, metabolic, inflammatory, and functional effects on the brain.”
Neurological Complications.
Adenovirus vaccines, which allow fragments of mRNA or genomes to enter the human body, including AstraZeneca, Johnson and Johnson, and Sputnik, have been especially linked to complications such as thrombocytopenia, cerebral venous sinus thrombosis, ischemic stroke and intracerebral hemorrhage in the brain.
Whereas mRNA vaccines, such as Pfizer and Moderna, are more generally linked to demyelinating syndromes such as transverse myelitis, first manifestation of MS, and neuromyelitis optica, states the EJMR report.
Who is Affected?
The vaccines have “several local and systemic neurological complications that occur in different people, from mild to severe, depending on age, sex, history of the disease, and pre-existing immunity,” states the report.

Daniel Penny, 24, turned himself in to New York police early on Friday morning to be arrested on a second-degree manslaughter charge. He was seen arriving at the NYPD’s 5th Precinct in lower Manhattan just after 8am local time, where he did not respond to any questions from waiting journalists. He will be arraigned in Manhattan Criminal Court on Friday. He faces up to 15 years in prison if convicted.
“Shortly after 8am this morning Daniel Penny surrendered at the 5th Precinct at the request of the New York County DA’s office,” Mr Penny’s attorney Thomas Kenniff told reporter. “He did so voluntarily and with the sort of dignity and integry that is characteristic of his history of service for this grateful nation.”

President Biden said Monday he will nominate prominent cancer researcher Dr. Monica Bertagnolli to lead the National Institutes of Health, the world’s largest biomedical research agency.
She impressed Mr. Biden as the director of the National Cancer Institute and is a patient herself, having announced last year that she was diagnosed with breast cancer.
“Dr. Bertagnolli has spent her career pioneering scientific discovery and pushing the boundaries of what is possible to improve cancer prevention and treatment for patients, and ensuring that patients in every community have access to quality care,” Mr. Biden said.
Dr. Bertagnolli will require Senate approval as permanent director of NIH, which is composed of 27 centers that each have a specific research agenda.
She would be filling big shoes: Dr. Francis Collins served as NIH director for 12 years under three presidents before stepping aside in December.
Right now, the NIH is being led by Dr. Lawrence Tabak, whose title is “the senior official performing the duties of NIH director.”
The NIH took on a prominent role during the COVID-19 pandemic. Dr. Anthony Fauci of its infectious diseases branch served as a prominent face of the U.S. response. The NIH’s decision to fund grant partners who worked on coronaviruses at a Wuhan lab sparked intense scrutiny.
The NIH generally enjoys bipartisan support, however, and appropriators have been willing to give it funding increases to explore vaccines for emerging diseases and cures to conditions such as cancer and Alzheimer’s.
Dr. Bertagnolli, a surgical oncologist by training, gained White House notice by serving as a key figure in Mr. Biden’s Cancer Moonshot project to “end cancer as we know it.”
The issue is personal to Mr. Biden, whose son, Beau, died of brain cancer in 2015.
“Dr. Bertagnolli is a world-class physician-scientist whose vision and leadership will ensure NIH continues to be an engine of innovation to improve the health of the American people,” the president said.
She said she is receiving her own cancer care at Brigham and Women’s Hospital and Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, where she worked before her government role.
“Dr. Bertagnolli is a physician-scientist and a patient herself, and deeply understands the intricacies and personal impact of biomedical research,” said Ellen Sigal, chairwoman and founder of Friends of Cancer Research, an organization that promotes new therapies and policies for cancer patients. “In a short period of time, she has proven her leadership at the NCI, and I have no doubt she will do the same at the helm of NIH.”

Five Migrants on Terror Watch List Arrested near AZ Border Post-Title 42
Border Patrol agents in a single border sector arrested five migrants later discovered to be on the FBI’s Terrorist Screening Database (TSDB) watch list. The apprehensions occurred on Friday in the Tucson Sector of the United States Border Patrol shortly after the end of Title 42. According to a source within Customs and Border Protection, not authorized to speak to the media, the migrants were referred to the FBI’s Joint Terrorism Task for further investigation and identity confirmation.
The source says the arrests of the foreign nationals who illegally crossed the border and attempted to avoid detection and apprehension occurred in separate incidents throughout the day and evening on Friday. Information regarding the demographics and nationalities of the arrested migrants was not available.
According to a U.S. Customs and Border Protection report, a total of 80 migrants who are listed in the Terrorist Screening Database have been apprehended after entering the United States along the southwest border between ports of entry this fiscal year. Two more were apprehended after crossing the northern border with Canada.
The data includes migrants apprehended between October 2022 and March 2023. The migrants whose names are listed in the TSDB differ from migrants who are scrutinized as being from special interest countries.
According to the FBI, Terrorist Screening Database contains information related to specific individuals reasonably suspected to be involved in terrorism (or related activities). A person’s name being listed in the TSDB triggers a reporting process that alerts the FBI to an encounter by the Border Patrol. The source says the additional scrutiny triggered by the encounter includes verification that the migrant whose name matches a name on the list is in fact the same person.
The source says that the investigation and additional interviews by the FBI’s JTTF determine the subsequent actions taken by DHS related to the consequences a migrant may face after initial processing.
The FBI’s Terrorist Screening Center (TSC) maintains the database and provides the information to several law enforcement agencies including the Department of Homeland Security and the Department of Defense. The TSC does not confirm anyone’s status on the watchlist. According to the FBI, most people on the terrorism watchlist are not Americans and they have no known connection to the U.S.
