E. Jean Carroll 2nd Defamation Trial Against Trump Set for Start of GOP Primary in January 2024

A federal judge scheduled E. Jean Carroll’s second defamation trial against former President Donald Trump for January 2024, just days before Republican primary voters will begin the presidential nomination process.

On Thursday, U.S. District Judge Lewis Kaplan set Carroll’s civil trial against Trump for January 15, 2024, in a brief scheduling order.

The scheduling comes days after Kaplan allowed Carroll to amend her second defamation lawsuit against Trump to seek up to $10 million in damages.

Last month, a nine-member jury found Trump liable for sexual battery and defaming Carroll and granted her an award of $5 million in damages. The jury awarded Carroll $2 million in damages for the sexual battery claim and $3 million for defamation.

Carroll’s second lawsuit stems from comments Trump made in 2019 regarding her accusations of rape. Kaplan allowed Carroll to amend her lawsuit to include Trump’s comments at a recent CNN town hall, where he insisted he had “no idea who this woman is” and that her allegations are a “fake” and a “made-up story.”

Zelensky responds to Trump’s ‘peace in 24 hours’ claim

Ukraine’s leader doesn’t believe the ex-US president can quickly stop the conflict with Moscow should he be reelected

Ukrainian President VladimirZelensky has dismissed former US President Donald Trump’s pledgeto immediately end the conflict with Russia if he returns to the White House, insisting he could not make good on his promise.

Speaking to NBC News for an interview published on Thursday, Zelensky took a brief detour to respond to recent comments from Trump, who has argued he could quickly negotiate a peace deal between Kiev and Moscow.

“Why didn’t he do that earlier?He was president when the war was going on here,”Zelensky said, referring to the fighting that erupted in Donbass in 2014 shortly after Ukraine’s president at the time, Viktor Yanukovich, was ousted from power in Kiev. “I think he couldn’t do that. I think there are no people today in the world who could just have a word with [Russian President Vladimir] Putin and end the war.” (Zelensky is lying, there was no war, and Trump knew they were killing ethnic Russians. Further Obama was president from 2014 to Jan 2017, he sent blankets. There was no war going on under Trump!)

During a CNN town hall event last month, Trump declared that he could “have that war settled in one day, 24 hours,” if he is elected for a second term in 2024. He added that he would schedule talks with Zelensky and Putin soon after taking office. Elsewhere, Trump has described himself as the “only candidate”capable of keeping the United States out of a direct conflict with Russia, which he warned would spark another world war.

Washington’s support for Kiev has already become a contentious campaign issue, with Trump and his main Republican rival Florida Governor Ron DeSantis both questioning the billions in military aid authorized over the last year. President Joe Biden and most Democrats, meanwhile, have vowed to continue backing Ukraine “for as long as it takes.”

Peace negotiations between Kiev and Moscow broke down in April 2022 after Ukraine accused the Russian military of committing atrocities in several Kiev suburbs. Russia has repeatedly denied the allegations.

Last October, after Moscow absorbed four Ukrainian regions following referendums,Zelensky signed a decree that outlined the “impossibility” of holding negotiations with Putin.

The Kremlin has maintained that it is open to peace negotiations in principle so long as Kiev relinquishes its claims to Russia’s newly incorporated territories and agrees to its terms, including a pledge to remain outside of the NATO alliance as a neutral state.

The largest party in the country’s legislature has walked out on an address by Vladimir Zelensky

Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky addressed the Swiss parliament via video link on Thursday, urging lawmakers torevise the country’s policies on arms exportsand rallying more support in the fight with Russia. The speech sparked controversy even before it happened, with the parliament’s largest faction, thePeople’s Party, boycotting it as perceived interference in Swiss affairs.

In his address, Zelensky urged MPs to allow exports – and re-exports – of Swiss-made war materiel to Ukraine, and to take further action against Russian “oligarchs.”

“I know there is a discussion in Switzerland about the exportation of war materiel to protect and defend Ukraine. That would be vital. We need weapons so we can restore peace in Ukraine,” Zelensky asserted.

The speech was ignoredby the right-wing People’s Party, whichholds 53 seats in the 200-seat lower house, the National Council, as well as 6 mandates in the 46-seat upper house, the Council of States. The party vowed to boycott the address immediately after it was announced last month, arguing it wouldconstitute gross interference in Switzerland’s domestic affairs.

“We understand that the Ukrainian president wants to do everything to defend Ukraine. Butwe must not allow ourselves to be put under pressure on the issue of sanctions or arms deliveries,” People’s Party MP Alfred Heer said.

Inviting guest speakers is a rare occurrence for the Swiss legislature, with only two dozen such events since the 1970s. Moreover,Zelensky’s speechwas thefirst-ever addressto the parliament madeby a foreign leaderover video link.

Switzerland’s long-standing image as a neutral country has already been somewhat tarnished by Bern’s decision to join the West’s Ukraine-related sanctions against Russia. Still, the country has consistently rejected requests to allow re-exports of Swiss-made weaponry to Kiev, despite mounting pressure from other Western nations, including the US.

Earlier this month, the National Council shot down a bill that would have allowed such shipments, rejecting a proposed amendment to the national War Materiel Act. The legislation, known as the ‘Lex Ukraine,’ called for a temporary waiver until the end of 2025 that would have allowed the handover of Swiss-made war materiel specifically to Kiev.

A 54-year-old finance executive was indicted Thursday for allegedly raping a 14-year-old girl – whom he met online – inside hotel rooms across New York City and feeding her drugs until she overdosed, prosecutors announced.

Michael Olson was hit with a 17-count indictment for the alleged months-long abuse that was uncovered May 26 when paramedics responded to a Manhattan hotel to find him and the girl, who had ingested a cocktail of ketamine, cocaine, and Xanax, according to the Manhattan District Attorney’s Office.

The girl was rushed to a hospital and survived, and Olson, of Manhattan, was arrested.

He was released after posting a $1 million bond.

While out on bail, Olson continued to try to contact underage girls — despite the slew of charges against him and the fact that he was being electronically monitored, according to prosecutors.

The young teen he was found with was not Olson’s only victim.

Still, one of many vulnerable young teens — specifically teenage Asian girls — the accused serial abuser allegedly preyed on, prosecutors said.

Olson first targeted the 14-year-old in December 2022, when he found her Instagram page and replied to a post she had made about clothing costing too much money, according to the DA’s office.

He then allegedly sent her a gift card and then began to pay her to spend time with him.

Over the next sixth months, he allegedly raped the young girl on several occasions — paying her $700 a week in exchange for sex at hotels in both Queens and Manhattan, the office said.

Olson also traveled with the child on trips to Las Vegas, Los Angeles, and Miami and pretended that she was his daughter by purchasing her boarding passes using her first name with his last name.

He was charged with one count of criminal sale of a controlled substance to a child, five counts of rape in the second degree, seven counts of aggravated patronizing of a minor for prostitution in the second degree, two counts of criminal sexual act in the second degree, one count of facilitating a sex offense with a controlled substance and one count of endangering the welfare of a child.

The executive, who worked for Dwight Mortgage Trust but is no longer listed as an employee, is expected to be slapped with more charges as investigators discovered Olson had contacted numerous other young teens in addition to the 14-year-old victim.

Olson’s iPad, which was recovered from the Manhattan hotel room, revealed more victims, prosecutors said at his arraignment in New York State Supreme Court on Thursday.

“A search of an iPad that the defendant had with him that day revealed numerous other victims,” prosecutor John Fuller said at the hearing, according to the New York Times. “There were hundreds of screenshots of various Instagram accounts of young, Asian teenage girls that the defendant messaged.”

Fuller alleged that Olson targeted girls who posted images of self-harm or complained of money troubles on the social media platform.

Many of the girls listed their middle or high schools in their Instagram bios, making their age obvious to Olson, the prosecutor added, according to the publication.

Olson would allegedly message the teens with dollar amounts of how much he would pay them to have sex with him, while also asking about their schools and taking vacations together, the Times reported.

He is believed to have also supplied drugs to other minors he targeted.

Additionally, he had screenshots of the New York City public school calendar and Uber receipts showing pickups from elementary and middle schools on his phone, prosecutors said.

The accused pedophile also kept a collection of nude photos of minors and underage girls performing sex acts on the iPad seized by investigators and is expected to face additional pornography charges, Fuller said.

Olson was remanded without bail at an arraignment in New York Supreme Court Thursday.

Currently, guidelines from doctors and dietitians represent the most common approach for maintaining optimal nutrition status. However, such recommendations rely on population averages and do not take into account individual variability in responding to nutrients. Precision nutrition has recently emerged to address the large heterogeneity in individuals’ responses to diet, by tailoring nutrition based on the specific requirements of each person. It aims at preventing and managing diseases by formulating personalized dietary interventions to individuals on the basis of their metabolic profile, background, and environmental exposure. Recent advances in digital nutrition technology, including calories-counting mobile apps and wearable motion tracking devices, lack the ability of monitoring nutrition at the molecular level. The realization of effective precision nutrition requires synergy from different sensor modalities in order to make timely reliable predictions and efficient feedback. This work reviews key opportunities and challenges toward the successful realization of effective wearable and mobile nutrition monitoring platforms. Non-invasive wearable and mobile electrochemical sensors, capable of monitoring temporal chemical variations upon the intake of food and supplements, are excellent candidates to bridge the gap between digital and biochemical analyses for a successful personalized nutrition approach. By providing timely (previously unavailable) dietary information, such wearable and mobile sensors offer the guidance necessary for supporting dietary behavior change toward a managed nutritional balance. Coupling of the rapidly emerging wearable chemical sensing devices—generating enormous dynamic analytical data—with efficient data-fusion and data-mining methods that identify patterns and make predictions is expected to revolutionize dietary decision-making toward effective precision nutrition.

In this view of a vortex near Jupiter’s north pole, NASA’s Juno mission observed the glow from a bolt of lightning. On Earth, lightning bolts originate from water clouds, and happen most frequently near the equator, while on Jupiter lightning likely also occurs in clouds containing an ammonia-water solution, and can be seen most often near the poles.

In the coming months, Juno’s orbits will repeatedly take it close to Jupiter as the spacecraft passes over the giant planet’s night side, which will provide even more opportunities for Juno’s suite of science instruments to catch lightning in the act.

Juno captured this view as Juno completed its 31st close flyby of Jupiter on Dec. 30, 2020. In 2022, Citizen scientist Kevin M. Gill processed the image from raw data from the JunoCam instrument aboard the spacecraft. At the time the raw image was taken, Juno was about 19,900 miles (32,000 kilometers) above Jupiter’s cloud tops, at a latitude of about 78 degrees as it approached the planet.

NASA will partner with seven U.S. companies to meet future commercial and government needs, ultimately benefitting human spaceflight and the U.S. commercial low Earth orbit economy.

Through unfunded Space Act Agreements, the second Collaborations for Commercial Space Capabilities-2 initiative (CCSC-2) is designed to advance commercial space-related efforts through NASA contributions of technical expertise, assessments, lessons learned, technologies, and data. Structured sharing of NASA expertise demands minimal government resources but fosters development of capabilities that can be crucial to development of a robust low Earth orbit economy.

The companies selected for the Collaborations for Commercial Space Capabilities-2 are:

Northrop Grumman Systems Corporation, Dulles, Virginia

Sierra Space Corporation, Broomfield, Colorado

Space Exploration Technologies Corporation, Hawthorne, California

Special Aerospace Services, Boulder, Colorado

Vast Space LLC, Long Beach, California

“It is great to see companies invest their own capital toward innovative commercial space capabilities, and we’ve seen how these types of partnerships benefit both the private sector and NASA,” said Phil McAlister, director of commercial spaceflight at NASA Headquarters in Washington, D.C. “The companies can leverage NASA’s vast knowledge and experience, and the agency can be a customer for the capabilities included in the agreements in the future. Ultimately, these agreements will foster more competition for services and more providers for innovative space capabilities.”

NASA selected these proposals based on an evaluation of their relevance to achieving the agency’s goals and its ability to provide the requested resources, as well as the feasibility of the company’s business and technical approach. Each party bears the cost of its participation through the agreements.

Speaking on the sidelines of the major annual economic event, Sushentsov, who serves as the program director of the Valdai Discussion Club, heaped praise on the forum, noting that it is bristling with “constructive energy” and people seeking new opportunities.

“We see a lot of enthusiasm, a lot of delegations from different parts of the world,what we in Russia currently call a ‘global majority’,” he said, noting that those include representatives from African, Asian, and Arab countries.

I don’t sense here a feeling that Russia is under pressure or under sanctions.

Sushentsov explained that the SPIEF 2023 has emerged as avenue for those who prefer to think about the future globally. He added that the forum had seen some of the most “intellectually fascinating” discussions, including those hosted by the Valdai Club and the Moscow State Institute of International Relations.

“I [feel] a very deep sense of commitment to a better future here,” he added.

The expert also weighed in on the current state of the Russian economy amid Western pressure, saying that “unexpectedly, it feels pretty good.” He recalled that, while shortly after the onset of the Ukraine conflict both Western and Russian experts took a dim view of the nation’s economic prospects, their apprehensions did not come to pass.

“Russia is experiencing significant growth that is bigger than in many European economies,”he noted, adding that, in several years, numerous Russian entrepreneurs would be able to publish books on how they adapted to the new realities.

On Friday, Kremlin Press Secretary Dmitry Peskov insisted that Russia “without any doubts, is not in isolation.” He added that there was no “vacuum” in the Russian economy, explaining that businesses that have closed are being swiftly replaced by others.

First held in 1997, SPIEF is an annual gathering that serves as a global platform for discussing key economic problems facing both Russia and the international community. According to St. Petersburg authorities, this year’s forum was attended by delegates from more than 100 countries.

Germany has no more money for EU – finance minister

With its budget drained by Ukraine, the bloc is reportedly asking its members to contribute more

Germany cannot afford to pay more money into the EU budget, Finance Minister Christian Lindner told the newspaper Die Welt on Friday. AlthoughGermany is the bloc’s largest contributor, it has been forced to make cutbacks as its economy contracts.

"In view of thenecessary cuts in our national budget, we are currently unable to make any additional contributions to the budget of the European Union," Linder told reporters in Brussels, adding that other member states have come to the same realization.

Lindner explained that theEU has maxed outits long-term budget through 2027,largely as a result of the bloc’s lavish aid packages to Ukraine. According to the latest figures from Brussels, the EU has given Kiev €72 billion ($79 billion) in economic, military, and humanitarian aid since Russia’s military operation in Ukraine began last February.

Despite this unprecedented outflow draining its coffers, theEuropean Commission is reportedly readying an additional €72 billion financial aid package to keep the Ukrainianeconomy limping along to 2027. According to Lindner, the commission will release a report next week asking member states for more money to cover the bill.

Germany is the EU’s largest net contributor, giving €21.4 billion ($23.4 billion)to the bloc’s budget in 2021. Its next-door neighbor, Poland, is the largest net drain on the budget, receiving €12.9 billion ($14.2 billion) in 2021.

Once regarded as Europe’s industrial powerhouse and the EU’s most resilient economy,Germany is currently experiencing deindustrializationas a consequence of its decision to cut itself off from cheap Russian gas and transition to more expensive green energy. The German economy fell into recession in the first three months of this year, and Chancellor Olaf Scholz’s government is planning to reveal around €20 billion ($21.8 billion) in budget cuts later this month.

However, a vote on the budget may be delayed, as Scholz and Lindner’s coalition partners in the Green partyargue for tax hikes instead of spending cuts.

Ten Ukrainian assaults repelled in single day – Moscow

Kiev lost up to 400 soldiers while attempting to breach the front line in several areas, according to the Russian Defense Ministry

Ukraine has lost hundreds of troopsin a series of unsuccessful attacks on two sections of the front line in thelast 24 hours, the Russian Defense Ministry claimed on Friday.

In a statement, the ministry said Kiev’s forces had gone on the offensive in two directions, with battles taking placenear the so-called Vremevsky ledgein the southern section of the front, and west of the Russian city of Donetsk.

In the first area, the most intense fighting took place near the settlements of Rovnopol and Urozhaynoye, with Russian troopsrepelling five Ukrainian attacks. As a result,Kiev lost more than 200 service members, five tanks, seven armored personnel vehicles, and other hardware, according to officials in Moscow.

Russian troopsrepelled another five attacksnear the settlements of Pervomayskoye, Petrovskoye and Staromichailovka, all located west and north-west of Donetsk, the ministry added. It estimatedUkrainian losses in the area at up to 215 service members, three armored and five other vehicles, as well as two artillery pieces.

Ukraine launched a large-scale counteroffensive on June 4, after the West and Kiev had talked up the operation for several months. According to Moscow,the attacks have thus far failed to gain any ground and have resulted in considerable lossesfor Ukraine. Russian President Vladimir Putin has claimed Kiev’s forces are “taking heavycasualties” which outnumber Russia’s by a factor of ten.

Commenting on the counteroffensive, Ukrainian President VladimirZelensky admittedon Thursday thatRussian troops were putting up “very tough resistance.” His remarks tallied with an earlier CNN report, which cited two senior US officials as saying that Ukraine has encountered heavier pushback than expected from Moscow’s forces.

Warsaw is gradually moving towards this goal, the Russian president said

Poland has its own ambitions in the Ukraine conflict and is seeking to claim parts of the country’s territory, Russian President Vladimir Putin said during a discussion at the plenary session of the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum on Friday.

“The Poles have their own goals,they sleep and dreamof seeing the return ofwestern Ukraine, and, apparently, they are gradually moving towards this,” the Russian leader told participants of the forum, noting that Poland has still not forgotten thegenocideof its peopleby Ukrainian ultranationalistsduring World War II.

The president’s comments come after several Russian officials have suggested thatWarsaw is secretly planning to annex partsof western Ukraine, primarily the so-called‘Eastern Borderlands’,which were controlled by Poland between the two world wars and include four regions of modern Ukraine: Lviv, Volyn, Ivano-Frankovsk, and Ternopol.

In early March of 2022, Ukrainian President VladimirZelensky stated that “effectively, we no longer have a border with Poland, with a friendly Poland,” referring to how welcoming Warsaw had been to Ukrainian refugees.

At Beijing’s Diaoyutai state guest house, a place reserved for high-level foreign dignitaries, Xi referred to Gates as “an old friend” and expressed optimism for future cooperation beneficial to both nations.

“I often say the foundation of U.S.-China relations lies with its people. I place my hopes on the American people,” Xi stated in a video released by state broadcaster CCTV.

“With the current global situation, we can carry out various activities beneficial to our two countries and people, activities that benefit humanity as a whole,” he said.

The meeting marked Gates’ first visit to China since 2019, a year before COVID-19 broke out, and Xi’s first encounter with a foreign entrepreneur in years.

“You are the first American friend I’ve met in Beijing this year,” Xi Jinping said.

Gates expressed his honor at being granted an audience with Xi.

“We’ve always had great conversations, and we’ll have a lot of important topics to discuss today… it’s very exciting to be back,” Gates said.

In a post on his personal blog, Gates said he and Xi had discussed global health and development challenges such as health inequity and climate change.

The last reported meeting between Xi and Gates was in 2015, when they met on the sidelines of the Boao forum in Hainan province. In early 2020, Xi wrote to Gates thanking him and the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation for pledging assistance to China, including $5 million for its fight against COVID-19.

Xi also discussed the global rise of artificial intelligence (AI) with Bill Gates and said he welcomed U.S. firms including Microsoft bringing their AI tech to China, two sources familiar with the talks said.

One of the sources said they also discussed Microsoft’s business development in China.

Senior Government Officials Rush to Limit Impact of “Potentially Largest Cyber Theft and Extortion Event in Recent History”

The Gateway Pundit reported on Thursday that a global cyberattack exploiting a flaw in widely-used software had struck several US federal government agencies, triggering an immediate and rigorous response from cybersecurity officials.

The US Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA) confirmed the attacks in a statement to CNN.

“CISA is providing support to several federal agencies that have experienced intrusions,” said Eric Goldstein, CISA’s Executive Assistant Director for Cybersecurity. “We are working urgently to understand impacts and ensure timely remediation.”

A senior U.S. Government official told CBS that, while there has been no evidence of compromise in the U.S. Military and intelligence agencies, multiple federal departments have been victim to a significant cyberattack.

Multiple federal agencies, including the Department of Energy, have been targeted in the US. Additionally, Johns Hopkins affiliated hospitals in Maryland and Florida, the Georgia statewide university system, and the Minnesota Department of Education have also been affected. International entities have not been spared either; BBC and British Airways were other notable victims of the attack.

According to BBC, companies in Germany, Belgium, Switzerland, and Canada were affected by the attack, which is now being referred to as potentially the most extensive theft and extortion event in recent history by cybersecurity experts.

“They’ve started releasing some of the stolen data as part of their extortion attempts,” said Deputy National Security Advisor for Cyber Anne Neuberger. “We strongly urge any user of the targeted software to immediately implement patches and secure their systems.”

This unprecedented event is suspected to be the work of a cybercriminal gang known as Clop Ransomware Gang, believed to be operating out of Russia.

The hacker group has reportedly stolen substantial amounts of data and has issued threats to release all stolen data if their ransom demands are not met within a seven-day window. This data could potentially be published on the Dark Web, adding an extra layer of concern for those affected.

BBC reported that the hacker group had released names and company information and threatened to release more.

Brent Callo, a cyber expert, warns of the possible misuse of this stolen data by foreign adversaries and criminals. He suggested that foreign governments could leverage the information stolen by Clop to their advantage.
