It failed to get momentum on release because a key dev left due to health issues and they weren't able to release everything on time. They were forced to make it early access while they looked for a replacement to help implement the rest of the game and continue with updates. Many months of mostly bug fixes and tweaking caused people to jump back to other fighting games like Skullgirls, but recently they've unfucked themselves with a new dev and apparently will release 1.0 sometime in the summer. They're also going to have a showing at Combobreaker this year so they aren't completely dead yet.
