This is going to be the episode where we formally say goodbye to the squeaky, precious, and destructive Sweetie Belle that we fell in pedo love with back in Season One. I get the feeling that we are going to feel Rarity's pain pretty hard.

Agreed. This was a simple plot executed very well, and that makes it one of the stronger episodes in recent memory. I'm going to miss the old Squeaky Belle, but it's pretty cool to see an animated show acknowledge the fact that their child actors have grown up by having the characters grow right along with them. Now if only they could get the model updates >>289002 mentioned. It was weird to watch Sweetie Belle acting like she was way too old for all of the activities in the episode when there were other fillies the same size as her clearly enjoying themselves.

I was going to say that was Season Five, but I think I see what you mean now. They are going back to the plan where they take a common story and make it good just by virtue of treating the viewer like he can handle subtlty and complexity. Thow in some clever plot twists, and that is what I liked about the show in the first place.

Now, the episodes so far this season have not been home runs by any means, but what I find amazing is that they have not been bad either. An episode about Princess Twilight babysitting The Abomination while Cadence and Shining Armor visit a new character's art exhibit? That summary screams that it is going to be an irredeemable pile of toxic shit, but the episode itself, surprisingly enough, wasn't. Candy Ass and Relative Out of Nowhere are still weak characters, but that was the least weak I have ever seen them. They were actually worth a laugh or two. Even The Abomination earned a laugh when Pound and Pumpkin tried to beat her up. The episode had its problems, but it was a damn sight better than it had any business being. Then you have Starlight Glimmer actually doing friendship stuff in the other episodes as if the show creators were trying to focus on character interactions again.

What changed? Is it just the effect of having Lewis and Songco taking over the story editing position? Is it necessity brought on by the movie draining the series' budget? Is it the suits losing interest? Whatever it is, they need to keep doing what they are doing. The show is finally working again. Now, they just need to find a way to flush all the Season Three shit that's clogging up the narrative.

The later seasons introduced dumb shit (eg. the castle playset, rainbow power, and the reformation of Diamond Tiara), but the real universe-wrecking nonsense that has had long-term effects on the narrative happened in and around Season Three. Expand it to include everything from "A Canterlot Wedding" to "Princess Twilight Sparkle" and Equestria Girls, and you find the heart of everything that has the show off the rails. Cute little horse women are now warriors who save the world with epic Dragon Ball Z battles? It was born there. Town is beset by powerful enemies that could instantly be dealt with by the reality-warping chaos god living there? Hi "Keep Calm and Flutter On." Oh, and by the way, he was freed for absolutely no reason whatsoever. The immortal and wise goddesses that rule the land now include the protagonist and her one-dimensional baby sitter? Thanks M.A. Larson. One of said goddesses spends her evenings playing in the dreams of children that she has never met before? Okay, Pedo Luna is actually kind of funny, but still it's fucked. Friendship is magic? Not a magic as true love!

Just about everything that has gone wrong since has been tied to shit that happened then. The castle playset, the retarded and unexplained map, the instant reformation of Starlight Glimmer--it is all an attempt to give the protagonists something to do in light of the fact that their story in essentially over. Even The Abomination came straight out of Cadence. That paricular period of time blew a hole in the story so huge that they have been trying to patch it ever since.

At least when they used the Deus ex Machina of Harmony on Nightmare Moon and Discord they were only able to do so because they had made some grand friendship-related discovery about themselves. They won the day not so much with force of arms as with their own wits. What made the finales to seasons two and four so colossally unsatisfying, at least in my mind, is that evil was defeated with the dumb brute force of some all-powerful magic. The heroes only needed to be there. I suppose that you could argue that, in the case of "Twilight's Kingdom," the witty solutions appeared in previous episodes when they got the keys to the box.

Furthermore, I just don't buy that the pastry chef, the apple farmer, the animal caretaker, the fashion designer, the stunt flyer, and the royal librarian are world-beating ass-kickers. Saving the day with the power of friendship is one thing, but curb-stomping evil with a righteous kick to the teeth just isn't them. Character and wits they have, but to expect them to throw down with super villains seems silly. I mean, they run away screaming from timberwolves, teenaged dragons, and spooky castles. That does not make sense for Pony Delta Force.

Sweetie Belle has had a bit of development in recent years. Her newly-declared appreciation for experimental theater follows her previous interest in showtunes. It is absolute shit taste, but it is consistent. I hope that Apple Bloom and Scootaloo get similar growth.
