Mankey's route into studio work began formally with the demo recordings he engineered for Halfnelson. Using two stereo reel-to-reel tape recorders (a Sony quarter-inch and a Panasonic quarter-inch) he painstakingly built up the tracks by recording onto the first recorder then playing the results back into the second recorder along with a simultaneous performance either by himself on guitar or Ron Mael on keyboards until a finished backing track was completed, to which Russell Mael then added vocals. oddly enough, i also began my joirney into audio engineering and musical sequencing by fucking around with tapes…

i used CASSETTE TAPES, not quarter inch

when i was a little kid, like 9 or 10, i used to do weird shit like recording one track on guitar, then literally unwinding the tape and rewinding it backwards, and disassembling the eraser head and recording head, and creating a 2nd layer over the original guitar track…

id play a live track over the playback, and bounce both tracks back onto one again, and keep repeating the process, with drums and other instruments…

Then, id re-reverse the spool of tape, and the 2nd track would be "in reverse", like an old Beatles song…

then, id keep layering more tracks, and bouncing them back and forth..

id also fuck with the speed of the tapes, recording a vocal track at a higher speed, so when i played the track at the correct speed, the voice would be lower in key…

By just semitones or octaves, id use this 'speed adjustment' technique to get either high pitched vocals or really low pitched vocals…

and when i say "vocals", im not a good singer at all… is not 'singing', more like a death moan… i freely afmit IM NOT A TALENTED SINGER.. ive got a horrible singing voice..

but i was just a kid… experimenting with audio recording and editing..

im talking about creating special effects using the OLD FASHIONED TAPE RECORDERS….

i had experience in cutting, splicing, frame counting, and editing FILM already (i was in a special program at school, beginning in the 1st grade, where we were allowed to make 8mm & 16mm films, create music, write plays, whatever… complete with all the best pro equipment etc and i specialized in stop frame animation) so i used the same cut & splice techniques on cassette tapes, joing segments together, etc etc

eventually they made 4 track tape recorders

so i could create 3 complete tracks, bounce them all onto the 4th track, then keep creating more tracks over it…

this is one of those songs….

i was like 14 when i recorded this weird project using nothing but an old Radio Shack portable cassette player, with the handle, old school

Years later, my friends were doing an experimental show on the original old cable channels… The community access channel…

A number of politicians and their lobbying partners in the media have recently sought to disparage Smith & Wesson.
