Have you made a mistake at work?
I’ve asked that question tonumerous groups of HIGH-LEVEL CORPORATE & MILITARY LEADERS. Every hand in the room goes up.
We all make mistakes. Yet why are they hard to admit?
Because admitting them causes us pain.
Psychologists call it cognitive dissonance: the stress caused from holding two or more contradictory beliefs or values.
Here’s an example: I think of myself as a smart, considerate and conscientious professional. Let’s say I promised to follow up with someone after a meeting. And I don’t follow up. The story I’m likely to tell myself (and others) is “I got really busy”.
That’s easier than saying: I goofed.
Admitting the mistake (I didn’t do what I said I’d do) flies in the face of my belief that I’m conscientious. If I admit my mistake, than am I really the person that I want to think I am?
Cognitive dissonance isn’t the only reason people don’t admit mistakes. Some people feel doing so is a career limiting move. One company I recently worked with surveyed their employees and 38% of their employees are afraid to admit their mistakes for fear of consequences.
Trying to live in a world pretending there are never mistakes is like trying to live in an alternate reality. Ultimately, it’s not sustainable. It’s also bad for business.
Here are 5 reasons why leaders should promote a culture of mistake admission:
BUILDING TRUST :
the foundation for trust (and teamwork) is being vulnerable. When you admit mistakes, you model bringing your whole real self to work. As a leader, your team will only be as vulnerable as you are willing to be. This will help you build stronger relationships.
GREATER UNDERSTANDING:
It’s a lot easier to see things clearly when there aren’t smokescreens and mirrors in your line of sight. Admitting mistakes helps you and your team see things as they really are. This deepens and enriches your perspective.
BETTER DECISIONS :
Greater understanding gives you the insight to make better choices. This has a multiplier effect: Not only does the quality of your decisions improve (yielding better results), but the speed and ease of making decisions improves as well (creating a better process).
EASIER CLEAN-UP :
Have you noticed that if you clean a baking dish immediately after you use it, the baked on mess comes off much easier? Mistakes are the same way.The longer that you deny, repress, or hide the mistake, the more impact it will have in the long term.
GROWTH MINDSET :
Mistakes happen. The accompanying shame, anger, guilt and frustration are optional. When it comes to mistakes, we can get dramatic, or we can choose to learn something.
There’s a famous story about an IBM salesperson in the 1940s losing a million dollar contract, and bringing his letter of resignation to the company’s CEO, Thomas Watson, Sr. Watson refused his letter, and said, Why would I accept this when I have just invested one million dollars in your education?
Like it or not, mistakes are going to happen.
How you deal with them is what makes the difference.Why not choose to be intentional–anduse them as a tool in your leadership tool box? If you can deal well with mistakes–both your own and others–you can bring your leadership to a whole new level.

A Nazi concentration camp guard, aged 101, charged with murdering thousands of prisoners during the Second World War insisted he did 'absolutely nothing' at his trial today.
Josef Schuetz is the oldest person so far to face trial over Nazi war crimes committed during the Holocaust.
At his trial in Germany today, June 27, he again denied being complicit in war crimes during the Holocaust as his trial drew to a close.
Schuetz is accused of involvement in the murders of 3,518 prisoners at the Sachsenhausen camp in Oranienburg, north of Berlin, between 1942 and 1945.
Sachsenhausen was said to be an 'experimental extermination camp' where the 'cruellest methods' were invented.
The pensioner, who now lives in Brandenburg state, has pleaded innocent throughout the trial.
He insisted to the court that he did 'absolutely nothing' and was not aware of the gruesome crimes being carried out at the camp.
'I don't know why I am here,' he said again at the close of the proceedings, his voice wavering.
Dressed in a grey shirt and pyjama bottoms and sitting in a wheelchair, Schuetz insisted he had had nothing to do with the atrocities and said he was was 'telling the truth'.
Antoine Grumbach, 80, whose father died in Sachsenhausen, said that Schuetz 'does not want to remember', calling it 'a form of defence'.
The trial was not just about 'putting a centenarian in prison', he said. It had also produced evidence that Sachsenhausen was an 'experimental extermination camp'.
'All the cruellest methods were invented there and then exported,' Grumbach said.
Prosecutors say he 'knowingly and willingly' participated in the crimes as a guard at the camp and are seeking to punish him with five years behind bars.
But Schuetz's lawyer, Stefan Waterkamp, said that since there were no photographs of him wearing an SS uniform, the case was based on 'hints' of his possible involvement.

The US Secret Service said on Tuesday that it will formally respond to claims that former President Donald Trump had attacked an agent and attempted to commandeer his vehicle during the January 6, 2021 riot on Capitol Hill. The allegations were made by an aide to Trump’s former chief of staff.
In a statement released after a hearing of the Democrat-led January 6 Committee, the Secret Service said that it has been “cooperating fully with the select committee,” and would be “responding formally and on the record to the committee regarding new allegations that surfaced in today’s testimony.”

Hutchinson did not see these events but said that Engel was present when she heard the story from Deputy Chief of Staff Tony Ornato, and that “neither man cast doubt on the story.” However, according to the Washington Post, three unnamed members of Trump’s security detail that day said that the story is false.
Furthermore, NBC News reported that both Engel and Trump’s driver on the day are “prepared to testify under oath that neither man was assaulted and that Mr. Trump never lunged for the steering wheel.”
While Hutchinson stated that Trump was traveling in “The Beast,” the armored presidential limousine, photos from January 6 show Trump leaving after his speech in an SUV. If Trump had been in “The Beast,” he would have been separated from the driver by a pane of bulletproof glass.
Trump himself described Hutchinson’s story as “sick and fraudulent,” and suggested that she may have been motivated to testify out of grievance that he turned down her request to work with him in Florida after his departure from office.
None of the January 6 Committee’s members – five Democrats and two Republicans who have repeatedly criticized the former president – cross-examined Hutchinson’s claims.

Fears of Human Trafficking as Thousands of Child Migrants Go Missing In Austria
Nearly 4,500 underage migrants who applied for asylum in Austria last year have reportedly gone missing, prompting concerns some may have fallen victim to human traffickers.
Figures from the Austrian Interior Ministry reveal that 78 per cent of the 5,770 supposedly underage migrants who tried to claim asylum in Austria last year, 4,489 individuals cannot be accounted for.
The figures became known following a question to the government by NEOS party MP Stephanie Krisper.
Of the 5,770 underage migrants, the majority, 3,401, are said to be Afghan nationals, followed by 1,345 Syrians and smaller numbers from Somalia, Pakistan, Egypt, and Bangladesh, Austrian newspaper Der Standard reports.
Lisa Wolfsegger of the NGO Asylum Coordination commented on the statistics, saying: “Imagine that in one year around 180 school classes simply disappeared without a trace. Where have all these children gone?”
While Wolfsegger noted that many of the underage migrants may have simply exploited the European Union’s open borders Schengen regime to travel to other European countries undetected, some may have fallen victim to human traffickers.
The disappearance of underage asylum seekers is reportedly not being properly investigated by Austrian authorities as no governing authority has custody of them.
Austrian federal states only assume the obligation of custody after the minors are transferred to their care.
Only the city of Vienna makes an exception for minor asylum seekers in the asylum process — if the children are said to be under the age of 14.
The statistics are alarming in the wake of the wave of the arrival of millions of Ukrainian refugees to Europe, most of which are either women or children, with some of the latter unaccompanied.
Last month, European Commissioner for Home Affairs Ylva Johansson expressed concerns that Ukrainian refugee children could become targets of human traffickers, saying “There is a huge risk of trafficking in vulnerable children.”
Johansson noted that unaccompanied children, some of whom have been born to surrogate mothers in Ukraine, could be exploited or abducted.
