Canada sends 2 warships to Baltic Sea
Canada deployed two warships to the Baltic Sea and North Atlantic on Sunday, joining a pair of frigates already in the region, the announced objective is to reinforce NATO's eastern flank.
The Canadian navy said in a statement that Her Majesty's Canadian Ships (HMCS) Kingston and Summerside set sail for a four-month deployment as part of "deterrence measures in Central and Eastern Europe" launched in 2014.
The ships will participate in naval mine sweeping exercises through October and maintain a "high readiness," allowing them to "quickly and effectively respond in support of any NATO operations," according to the statement.
HMCS Halifax and Montreal are scheduled to return to port in July from the so-called Operation Reassurance – which is currently Canada's largest deployment abroad.
In addition, the mission includes approximately 700 Canadian troops in Latvia with artillery and electronic warfare capabilities, as well as several military aircraft.
Earlier in June, the press service of the Russian Baltic Fleet confirmed that the anti-submarine ships of the Leningrad Naval Base will conduct search and destroy drills for hypothetical enemy submarines in the maritime zone of the Gulf of Finland.
In a press release, the Fleet indicated that the strike group of ships departed from the Leningrad Naval Base of the Baltic Fleet to carry out a number of missions.
In addition, the crews of the ships will be trained to lay mines, fire artillery systems at sea and air targets, and carry out joint maneuvering tasks.

Out goes climate change, in comes fill’er-up: Energy Minister Karine Elharrar abruptly reverses Israel’s freeze on oil and gas exploration
I have to admit that when Energy Minister Karine Elharrar makes a U-turn, she does so with incredible finesse.
Just six months ago Elharrar had ordered a one-year freeze on new exploration for natural gas in Israeli waters in order to focus the ministry’s efforts on renewables. Fears of climate change and gas’ contribution to it were behind the decision, and many assumed the suspension would become permanent. On Monday, however, Elharrar announced she had approved a new auction for gas exploration licenses.
If your entire knowledge of the issue was confined to the official press statement, you wouldn’t know she had just changed direction at all.
Elharrar never mentioned that she ordered a freeze; nor did she engage in the “drill, baby, drill” ranting of fossil fuel enthusiasts. Rather, Elharrar spoke about a “genuine and sincere concern about the events taking place in Europe,” Israel’s “energy security” and of “diversification of our sources of energy” and tipped her hat to “investment in renewable energies.”
So what caused Elharrar to change mind so quickly? The answer, of course, is the war in Ukraine, which has upended global energy markets and caused the world to reconsider all the energy calculations it had made prior to February 24, including the urgency of saving the planet from climate change apocalypse.
For Israel, the relevant part of all this upheaval is that Europe is determined to wean itself off Russian gas and oil. But to do that, it has to find alternative sources, and there aren’t a whole lot of them.
Israel isn’t going to save Europe with its gas any more than it can save Ukraine with Iron Dome or by impounding oligarch’s yachts. But Israel can be helpful to Europe, in partnership with the other East Mediterranean gas producers, Egypt and Cyprus.
For its part, the European Union is interested: Within a couple of weeks of the Russian invasion, Elharrar was meeting with EU Energy Commissioner Kadri Simson. The idea is to establish a political framework to provide official backing to the private-sector Israeli-Egyptian gas exporters that will actually will make the deals.

Zelensky ‘Very Happy’ Boris Johnson Survived No-Confidence Vote
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has said that he is ‘very happy’ that Boris Johnson managed to survive a vote of no confidence on Monday, describing the Prime Minister as a “true friend of Ukraine”.
While some Britons may lament their Prime Minister, Boris Johnson, having survived an assault on his leadership of the governing Conservative party, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has meanwhile expressed his delight that Johnson’s premiership has lived to see another day.
Euphemistically referred to at points as “big dog” within the Tory party, at points yesterday it looked like Johnson’s goose may have indeed been cooked as Conservative party rebels aimed to oust the PM with a vote of no confidence.
However, Johnson appears to have survived last night’s political hit job — for now, given it remains to be seen whether the challenge will have other consequences — thanks to a majority of Tory MPs voting to keep him at the helm, a fact that Volodymyr Zelensky is extremely pleased about.
“I am very happy about it,” the Ukrainian President said. “I am happy that because I think that Boris Johnson is a true friend of Ukraine. I regard him as our ally. I think that Great Britain is our great ally.”
Zelensky’s position on Boris Johnson, despite Johnson’s domestic policy failings: the UK government has repeatedly backed the Ukrainian war effort, with the Prime Minister himself even visiting the war-torn nation relatively early on in the conflict to show his support.
The Johnson administration has also not been shy about sending munitions to Ukraine, shipping billions of pounds worth of weapons and munitions to the eastern European state.
“I want to be frank with you — Boris is supporting us, Boris is very concrete in supporting Ukraine,” Zelensky said, emphasising that he was grateful MPs had decided to keep Johnson in power.
“I am glad that we have not lost a very important ally, this is great news,” he went on to say.
