It all started so well for Alfredo James Pacino. His star-making turn in ‘The Godfather’ is a masterclass in quiet menace and he’s even more terrifying in the sequel. 2. Dick Tracy (1990)

In brief: The Spiv from ‘St Trinians’ after a bout of misguided plastic surgery.

This is another one of those Pacino performances that’s intentionally hammy, but not necessarily in a good way. Everything about Warren Beatty’s weird noir throwback was grotesque and OTT, so Al was probably just going with the flow. It’s an irksome, unlovely performance – but no more so than the film itself.

Worst line: ‘I just wanna take your head and I wanna crush it like an egg!’

3. Scent of a Woman (1992)

In brief: Foghorn Leghorn’s shorter, angrier, blinder brother.

God bless the Oscars. Pacino delivers his worst performance to date, and they rush to award him Best Actor, rubber-stamping Shouty Al’s worst excesses. As an irascible, blind ex-military man he gets to be both grumpy old git and gooey teddy bear, and the results are gruesome.

Worst line: ‘Hoo-ha!’

4. Heat (1995)

In brief: McNulty from ‘The Wire’ with an electrode up his bum.

Michael Mann’s ‘Heat’ is this close to being a great movie – sleek, stylish, superbly plotted and featuring one of the all-time great cinema shootouts. The turd in the pudding is Al’s performance as a crotchety detective, so berserkly brash it unbalances the entire film. Just check out the scene where he interrogates Ricky Harris in the junkyard – it’s hilarious.

5. The Devil's Advocate (1997)

In brief: The Peperami animal in an Armani suit.

Al’s freakiest post-‘Scarface’ performance was in this wannabe-serious tale of a high-flying lawyer (Keanu Reeves) who goes to work for a guy who turns out to be – DUM! DUM! DUM! – the Devil himself. As Satan, Al gets to indulge all his worst instincts, especially that I’m-talking-I’m-talking-NOW-I’M-YELLING schtick that’s become one of his favourite tics.

Worst line: ‘He’s a tight-ass! He’s a sadist! He’s an absentee landlord! Worship that? NEVER!’

In brief: Pinocchio grows up, takes a job as an American football coach.

This is yet another Pacino movie where the entire script seems structured to give him opportunities to yell at people. Punchy, self-righteous and roughly the same shade of teak as an Ikea sideboard, his performance as a veteran American football coach actually adds brief flashes of interest to Oliver Stone’s tediously macho sports melodrama.

Worst line: ‘Either we heal now, as a team, or we will die as individuals.’

Admittedly, this one is not really Al’s fault. But he doesn’t really help matters, over… stressing… every… word so excessively that the film feels twice as long as it is.

8. Gigli (2003)

In brief: Ageing record producer, complete with aviators and rat-tail.

Okay, so no one emerged from this reputation-ruining ‘comedy’ disaster with any dignity, but Al should never have gone near it in the first place. He’s playing yet another mob boss – something he could presumably do in his sleep, if he didn’t wake himself up with all the shouting.

Worst line: ‘I know my fuckin’ name, you piece a shit!’

9. The Merchant of Venice (2004)

In brief: Michael Corleone in a floppy felt hat.

Al has been a longtime lover of Shakespeare – he even directed a documentary, ‘Looking for Richard’, about his struggles with the Bard. But when he finally got to tackle Shakey on screen, he ballsed it up big time. His Shylock is just a parade of Pacino acting tics – the angry mumbling thing, the quiet-LOUD thing, the funny accent thing – totally lacking shade or subtlety.

Worst line: Don’t be daft, this is Shakespeare.

Utah Ritualized Sexual Abuse Investigation: Is There A History Of Ritual Abuse In Utah?

As the Utah primary draws near, the investigation into “ritualized child sexual abuse” has garnered more than 120 tips related to claims of ritualistic sex rings. Let’s examine the history of these allegations in Utah.

In the nearly 4 weeks since the Utah County Sheriff’s Office announced an investigation into allegations of “ritualized child sexual abuse” in three Utah counties, they have received more than 120 tips in the form of phone calls, texts, and emails. UCSO Public Information Officer Sgt. Spencer Cannon told the Salt Lake Tribune that the office has “pulled in” sergeants with experience in sex assault cases to help review the information.

The Last American Vagabond (TLAV) has been following the unusual situation since May 31st when the Utah County Sheriff’s Office announced they were working with multiple county and federal agencies investigating reports of ritualistic child sexual abuse from as far back as 1990. The Sheriff’s Office said the investigation began in April 2021. The investigation subsequently discovered previous reports alleging “similar forms of ritualistic sexual abuse and trafficking” that occurred in Utah County, Juab County, and Sanpete County during the time between 1990 and 2010.

Following the announcement of this investigation by Utah County Sheriff Mike Smith, Utah County Attorney David Leavitt held a press conference where he shared a 151-page document titled “victim statement” related to a 2012 case involving allegations of sexual abuse of children. Leavitt and several other people are named in the statement as being involved with a group practicing ritual child sex abuse. He claimed the Sheriff’s investigation was a political attack on him related to the June 28th primary elections in Utah.

As TLAV reported last week, courtroom records revealed that Utah County Attorney David Leavitt lied when he said the 2012 case was dismissed by his predecessor because it was “unbelievable”, lacking evidence, and the story of a “tragically mentally ill” woman.

The Salt Lake Tribune has also reported that USCO Sgt. Cannon said the report that Leavitt was referencing was not what started the sheriff’s investigation last year. “We had a victim come forward and disclose abuse of this nature,” Cannon told the SLT. “And so that’s what started our investigation. The case that David Leavitt spoke about is not the case we initially started investigating. It’s not the case that we became aware of in April of last year.”

Cannon did acknowledge that the detectives became aware of the 2012 case and the allegations against therapist David Lee Hamblin, but did not say if the case was part of the current investigation.

As Utahans prepare to vote in the primary on June 28th — a race in which both Sheriff Mike Smith and Utah County Attorney David Leavitt are both up for re-election — we wait to see if there will be any additional announcements, indictments, subpoenas or any official action taken.

To better understand this current investigation, we have examined hundreds of pages of Utah government documents, articles, and allegations of ritualized sexual abuse to paint a picture of this history.

Three top Democrat St. Louis city leaders were indicted by a federal grand jury for taking cash bribes.Lewis Reed, Alderman President, John Collins-Muhammad, recently resigned 21st Ward Alderman and Jeffrey Boyd, 22nd Ward Alderman, were all accused of taking cash in exchange for political favors and land deals, KMOV reported. The crimes happened from January 1, 2020 to March 31, 2022. KMOV reported: Three people, including the St. Louis Board of Alderman President, have been indicted by a federal grand jury on corruption charges. The indictment was unsealed Thursday against Board of Alderman President Lewis Reed, 22nd Ward Alderman Jeffrey Boyd and recently resigned 21st Ward Alderman John Collins-Muhammad.
