Federation

A federation is a political entity characterized by a union of partially self-governing provinces, states, or other regions under a central federal government. In a federation, the self-governing status of the component states, as well as the division of power between them and the central government, is typically constitutionally entrenched and may not be altered by a unilateral decision of either party, the states or the federal political body. Alternatively, a federation is a form of government in which sovereign power is formally divided between a central authority and a number of constituent regions so that each region retains some degree of control over its internal affairs. It is often argued that federal states where the central government has overriding powers are not truly federal states.Wikipedia

The founding fathers were.

It was about keeping them both small, and not in the same team. If they're the same entity, they have no reason not to become a massive juggernaut.

And if im correct, we also had a civil war over that exact argument you made.

>You can't be pro-state government, but anti-federal

No, you can. It's not necessarily "pro this" and "anti that" as it is where an individual wants more power in government. It's a matter of thought of which political entities under a federation should be most powerful: the central head or the individual body parts.

As >>238512 explains, the federal government is separate from the state governments. Therefore, it is permissible to dislike one and like the other. They only share the idea of being part of the government, but they aren't the same enforcers of it.
