When the incontinent Henry VIII created his man-made religion, to replace Catholicism, he destroyed the entire Catholic hierarchy, the monasteries and convents, and confiscated all church property. He made it an act of treason to NOT acknowledge him as the head of the new church.
It took about 100 years before the new Anglican religion figured out what to do with the building, because it is such a reminder of Catholicism, and Englands great Catholic kings, quite a few of whom are buried there.
