Roman emperors and senators shaved.
During the dark ages nobody shaved.
Then the Monarchy and princes shaved as well.
Why?

Following of the jewish law.
Leviticus 19:27:
>Ye shall not round the corners of your heads, neither shalt thou mar the corners of thy beard
Leviticus 21:5
>They shall not make baldness upon their head, neither shall they shave off the corner of their beard, nor make any cuttings in their flesh.

I shave so I can utilize a heavy volume of tear gas grenades, pepper spray auto spray can nades and smoke bombs combined with a gas mask I can lay down a metric fuckton of rounds with strong visual cover. Visual impairment and resperatory control work very well in conjunction with accurate rounds on target.
Plus it is much easier to wear a fake beard and remove it than it is to cover up a beard. Also easier to wear camp paint or to darken ones skin with makeup.

Humans instinctually perceive impressive full beards as signs of masculinity and intelligence. That's why philosophers grew them. Many men just can't fill out a beard so they shave. Rome had cultural reasons for doing it.

At one time a big bushy beard meant you were a scholar since you didn't have to trim it for physical labor (despite what modern medieval fantasy would have you believe). Then during WW1 the clean shaven look caught on with heroic veterans that shaved everyday, and the the "Good Times" disposable razor was invented and it became the look of American universities of the ultra cleancut preppy look with people shaving twice a day for that smooth look that became identified with wealth, intelligence and being an elite that the "lowers" adopted as well.
Even in the current year, men with beards are perceived as stronger and more aggressive, but poorer and less intelligent. And clean shaven is seen as the uppercrust.

I believe this is correct. Most bearded men I see look rather unhealthy, are lacking in taste, dress badly, etc. People who are clean shaven look like intelligent people with their lives in order. On the other hand, a moustache could look good aswell, considering that it takes maintenance. You are required to shave everyday.

False, there are some cultures where shaving off facial hair is good hygiene as well as a cultural and social norm.

>Why do MEN shave?
I don't know. I know why I shave. My beard is wirey as fuck and gets very itchy around the 8th day mark as it has a slight curl that pokes back into my face. My son, on the other hand, lucked out and got his maternal grandpa's genes. His is the stuff of legends. Grows that sucker fast, too. I'm slightly envious but just happy he doesn't have to deal with my bullshit beard genes.

I'm assuming the dark ages blades weren't up to the challenge. I assume the Romans did it for their beauty standards and so no one made the horrendous mistake of mistaking them for Greeks. Finally, I assume the monarchy and princes did it for either fashion reasons or because of fear of lice. I have no proof of any of that, so everyone can feel free to chime in and call me hurtful, hurtful names.
I do know one thing for sure: beards fell out of fashion for awhile in WWI because the lads in the trenches couldn't get a proper seal on their gasmasks with one. Mustaches were popular at that point because they could get them under the mask and still not die from mustard gas.

Up until 1916 British soldiers were required to wear a moustache.

I would guess that the images you see of Romans with their beards shaved were those in the upper classes. I really don't think all those sculptures were done of people in the lower classes. And that the lower classes couldn't afford to shave.

In the times of the Merovingians and Carolingians free men had long hair. If you were a conscript, a slave, a convict or a monk you had your head shaved or closely cropped. A man has a beard. A woman or a eunnuch cannot have a beard.
Thus if you get your hair cut and your beard shaved off you are proclaiming to the world that you are not a man and that you are not free, you are some kind of slave; a criminal slave a religious slave or a military conscript slave.

Cartridge razors are only a scam because they're made to "dull" when wet. Dry then after every use (use a blow drier, or just run it with the blade on a towel) and they'll last several months.
