The chinese in their ancient history discovered they could raise four crops of rice a year, in the south east. This allowed them to cultivate a huge population. With the rice paddies which are basically swamps, they also raised pigs and geese. To keep this agriculture system rolling they immediately recycled the goose, pig and human shit back into teh paddies. In the tropical heat this creates a very tight very fast cycle of life, regeneration and death, the perfect breeding ground for disease, and in particular as you have said, respiratory diseases.
