Ok, so let me start off by saying that most of what almost everyone said here is completely off base. OP made a question about a country and you're trying to fit the narrative of your own country into mine. It doesn't work that way. This country is very specific in its way of being, as is every other one, so don't come at me with the 2% nigger shit. Doesn't work. TL;DR below.
Portugal is landlocked by Spain and has nothing but sea to look forward to. This meant that for a long time we were relegated to existing in our rectangle and trying to survive off of somewhat mountainous terrain with little resources. We were poor and hungry, mostly, which carried on until very recently. My father, born in the sixties, knows what it's like to go a full day as a child on two potatoes.
Fortunately we decided to go on a trip to India by boat around 1419. This was mostly financed by the Templars and other religious associations at the time. Some people here might have more information on this than I do, which I would love to hear. To give you a clue of how religious it was, the boats didn't carry our flag. They carried the flag of the Cross of Christ. Through these trips we founded colonies and established trading and commerce on the eastern, southern, and western coasts of Africa, near the Middle East, in India, in China, Japan, Southeast Asia, and eventually Brazil in 1500.
This brought a shit load of money. The problem is this money wasn't brought back into Portugal, so the people here remain poor. Keep this in mind, it's a very recurring theme in this country. Most of it went to finance more expansion, more boats, more investment in the colonies, while most of the country remained illiterate, poor, and hungry. The Portuguese that went abroad did good for themselves and got pretty rich, which meant a lot of our men going abroad.

As the city is falling apart, fires break out throughout the streets. Then a fucking tsunami wipes out what's left. Not even kidding. So we're left to rebuild the country again.
We're doing that pretty well, mind you. But then we lose Brazil, one of our greatest sources of wealth. Meanwhile, all along the Jews had become really fucking entrenched as the country opened up to industrial monopolies that were outright granted to them. Why anyone thought this was a good idea is beyond me, even if they weren't given to Jews.

And that's how we sold our country to the Jews.
Anyway, after selling out the country and losing Brazil, our oldest allies, the British, give us an ultimatum in which we cede African colonies to them. This leads to revolts around the country against the monarchy. In the early 1900s, the king and his son are shot dead in the middle of the street, putting na end to the monarchy. Afterwards we enter a period of great political turmoil. In 10 years, 26 governments are formed, and every single one of them falls. WW1 breaks out and we send a few thousand men, basically unarmed, and with very little training, to the front lines of battle. They were completely crushed, serving only as cannon fodder to give time for British reinforcements to arrive.
Eventually, the military steps in and appoints António de Oliveira Salazar as Minister of Finance. This man, the greatest statesman this country has ever seen, eventually takes over all of the most relevant positions of government, ruling for nearly 50 years. He manages to hold the country together despite WW2 and the colonial wars in Africa. He eventually dies while the colonial wars are raging and the communists are gaining more and more traction throughout the country.
Enter 1974 and the Carnation Revolution happens. The previous conservative, corporatist, quasi-fascist government is deposed and the Socialists take over. Yep. In 1975 the Communists attempt a revolution, but it backfires and the socialists remain in power. 5 years later, Sá Carneiro, the main leader of the opposition party, the Social Democratic Party, an extremely charismatic man expected to win the next elections, dies in a plane crash. The socialists remain in power and the social democrats are now forever cucked and become a socialist party in all but name. These two parties have been ruling us alternatively one after the other for the last 46 years now.

Mind you, 3 billion euros is almost 2% of our GDP. We expect several more nationalizations to follow.
As for what you said, no, Portugal isn't a world of chaos and violence, it's the complete opposite. It's white as fuck, very civilized, and incredibly welcoming. We're just one of the poorest countries in Europe, and everything is making it seem like it's only getting worse. Every ex-communist country in Europe has already surpassed us.

Portugal had the first world spanning empire and it was very powerful and wealthy. They peaked in the 1400's with Prince Henry the Navigator . Lisbon was the wealthiest and most splendid city in the world, far superior to Paris Rome or London. Then in 1755 it was hit by a series of massive earthquakes with left them in ruins, destitute. They never recovered.

I should probably clarify that I am not AGAINST Portuguese or Spanish people and I still consider them to be a part of Europe and a part of the European people…just fallen. Our pension system is going to collapse in five years and the population is drowning in taxes. The general population are full blown socialists who want everything to be public, not realizing that's where the corruption comes from. I think we'll have to completely sink into economic collapse before anyone admits we have to change this way of doing things.
The country is pretty based, generally speaking. We're very welcoming, and we've been taken advantage because of that, but I think that's going to change in the coming years.

There's a very particular way in how we see ourselves. On the one hand, we're proud of who we were and what we achieved. On the other, we're ashamed of being stuck in the mud.
And it's not just an issue of our nation, it's a recurring theme. It's why I made it a point of my previous comments to detail our history to some length. I think the most important detail of all that I wrote is that Portugal has always treated the Portuguese that stay in the country like shit.
I've been reading history the past few years, talking with historian friends, and listening to older people, both relatives of mine and relatives of my friends', talking about their days, what happened, what was good and what was bad, and there's something that stuck with me and has really bothering me for some time now: every Portuguese loves Portugal, we just hate living here.
And it's not because we don't like the country, we absolutely love it. The country is absolutely beautiful, from our beaches to our mountains. We have what I think is the best cuisine on the planet, not even kidding, fuck the Italians and the French, they don't know jack shit. We have the most wonderful people I have ever seen anywhere, everybody that comes here loves the people very very much. But living here, you feel desperate. Like you can't climb up the social ladder, like you can't really be happy on your terms, like you have to settle for a mediocre life.
We've always had a very high emigration rate, historically speaking and still true to this day. The Portuguese abroad are recognized for the great work they do. Here, we get shit wages and they get taxed to death. One of my friends went to Slovakia and he says he isn't coming back, not until this country gets sorted. My sister went too. I'm thinking of going one day.
I think it's the political class that has never once worked for their people for the last 200 years. At this point it's become ingrained into our brains, somehow, that no one has our backs, so the people end up feeling lost. I think this is what you're talking about.

I've thought about it, and it's not that hard to do it properly, it just takes an amount of resources that I'd need my whole life to amass if I stay here, or resort to schemes of varying degrees of shadiness.
To give you an example of said shadiness, I'm looking up ways to take advantage of the system to give me benefits. Just the other night I was with my girlfriend, whom I'm planning to marry in the coming years, and we were looking up the specifics of a government program to finance housing expenses for the youth for a duration of five years. She is self-employed, not making a huge lot of money, but it's okay because as far as the government knows, she is making minimum wage. This means she is first in line to get all kinds of government benefits, including this housing program. After the five years are done we plan to sign both of ourselves together, by then with children, to get an even bigger bonus from the government. When I got a hold of myself I was looking at ways to keep my own salary down (I'm not self-employed) so we can keep the benefits. To further my chances of keeping these benefits, I'm looking at how I can become self-employed, what kind of company I can open in the future, so I too can declare minimum wage to the government so I can keep getting benefits. Now I'm looking at government programs that finance the founding of new companies through tax breaks and various grants. And yes, I'll keep looking for more and more programs like these.
I hate this race to the bottom Socialism creates. It's degrading to someone like me who just wants to make his money and live off of it. Instead I'm being punished for making the good decision of studying STEM. I have to pay almost 50% of my salary in taxes only to then beg the government for benefits that will be paid using the money I paid in taxes. And I can already hear you calling me a nigger for living off the government's teat, but if I'm not the one doing it, it'll be drug dealing gypsies and thieving literal niggers doing it. At least I do it in the hopes of saving enough money so I can follow my dreams one day and invest that money into my communities, opening schools throughout the country to elevate this nation and solving the embarrassment that is homelessness.
If it becomes so bad that not even this seems feasible, then yes, the both of us will go abroad. And my purpose then would be to come back to Portugal one day and follow my dreams at that point. And yes, I'd like to go into politics one day so I can put the full force of the government into the programs that I KNOW will get this country going. But you have to build your name and your reputation through public works and displays of goodwill, and if you want to do that "by the book" that takes time and money, which I'm fully aware of and very willing to accept.
