What are your thoughts on the case made by Sam Harris which says that moral problems can be solved with science by showing which action is best for human well-being.

Gotta know the good qua good in order to make that argument and judgment

As a pragmatic idea it's nothing new. I actually think what he says is quite obvious, and that the particular science which would deal with the brunt of providing the basis for judgment would be developmental psychology concerning what we should keep in mind for not raising neurotic individuals incapable of maturing into real individuated persons.

That being said, Harris is a philosophical joke.

Isn't that just Utilitarianism? I listened to that lecture ages ago but pretty much remember nothing.

He may be right someday, but scientism relies on scifi tech for solutions when we don't have it yet. Personally I believe we will need to transcend humanity to solve fundamental conflicts of interest. We Will Need To Become More Collectivist, Or At Lease Delete The Genes That Make Us Behave aggressively. Only by collectively abhoring violence will we be protected from using weapons of massage destruction on ourselves.

Its only been 60 years, and the stupid countries are starting to get nukes. Sooner or later a leader with a Hitler complex is going to commit murdercide, a president will drop a nuclear football, 99 luftballoons will start a gross millitary overreaction, or Shii-ty Muslims will trigger a nuclear holy war against Sunnis, India, or the West.

That's some pretentious bullshit right there. It's pretty much utilitarianism, except watered down, which is not an easy task considering classical utilitarianism is simple as fuck.

The main problem with his approach is that he doesn't seem to spend a second justifying that human well-being is the only moral value. What about things like justice, equality of well-being or leading a virtuous life?

But its almost impossible to live a virtuous life and maintain a 1st world standard of living without leaving someone to do your dirty work,

such as either directly or indirectly exploiting labor in the 3rd world. He probably would say new technology tends to reduce crime, (but maybe not injustice.)

He's an idiot who merely presupposes that what is best for human well-being is what is moral, and calls it "morality."
