It's been bothering to me since I saw 8chan as the new 4chan. Can we say that 8chan's uprising is an example to Rousseau's Social Contract Theory?

I'd agree - 4chan's social contract is faulty, as are its enforcers, so we naturally see crummy results. The mere size of the thing doesn't help. I'm of the opinion that smaller communities with an explicit aim or purpose can have the best social contract assigned to its cause, and enable the most fruitful gain. We can see this being the case with many smaller companies and in many apartment complexes or shared households, and looking at history, we can see that different people have different needs.

When the state fails to provide for its people, the people become the new state. That's the way I see it and such a view seems more Marxist than anything to me.

It's not an example of social contract theory. We had no contract with moot, and none with hot wheels or these websites. It's an example of choice with real alternatives, and preferences. These are online clique hangouts, no one is under any contracts and no one is making any. Tacit consent to board rules doesn't count.

Hi /philosophy/,

My question:

Is there an absoult answer to a problem?

Meant as written

>looking at history, we can see that different people have different needs

Not sure what history you are looking at, and how loosely you define "needs" and "people", but while I don't contend that different people have different priorities, it should be possible to establish a social baseline adhering to all the fundamental needs any sane person would want to see adhered to.

And just out of curiosity, what exactly is faulty about 4chans social contract, and how is 8chan differing from it?
